Creating telecommunication services based on object-oriented frameworks and SDL
This paper describes the tools and techniques being applied in the TINA Open Service Creation Architecture (TOSCA) project to develop object-oriented models of distributed telecommunication services in SDL. The paper also describes the way in which Tree and Tabular Combined Notation (TTCN) test cases are derived from these models and subsequently executed against the CORBA-based implementations of these services through a TTCN/CORBA gateway
Towards the Usage of MBT at ETSI
In 2012 the Specialists Task Force (STF) 442 appointed by the European
Telcommunication Standards Institute (ETSI) explored the possibilities of using
Model Based Testing (MBT) for test development in standardization. STF 442
performed two case studies and developed an MBT-methodology for ETSI. The case
studies were based on the ETSI-standards GeoNetworking protocol (ETSI TS 102
636) and the Diameter-based Rx protocol (ETSI TS 129 214). Models have been
developed for parts of both standards and four different MBT-tools have been
employed for generating test cases from the models. The case studies were
successful in the sense that all the tools were able to produce the test suites
having the same test adequacy as the corresponding manually developed
conformance test suites. The MBT-methodology developed by STF 442 is based on
the experiences with the case studies. It focusses on integrating MBT into the
sophisticated standardization process at ETSI. This paper summarizes the

Spinal Test Suites for Software Product Lines
A major challenge in testing software product lines is efficiency. In
particular, testing a product line should take less effort than testing each
and every product individually. We address this issue in the context of
input-output conformance testing, which is a formal theory of model-based
testing. We extend the notion of conformance testing on input-output featured
transition systems with the novel concept of spinal test suites. We show how
this concept dispenses with retesting the common behavior among different, but

Maintenance of Automated Test Suites in Industry: An Empirical study on Visual GUI Testing
Context: Verification and validation (V&V) activities make up 20 to 50
percent of the total development costs of a software system in practice. Test
automation is proposed to lower these V&V costs but available research only
provides limited empirical data from industrial practice about the maintenance
costs of automated tests and what factors affect these costs. In particular,
these costs and factors are unknown for automated GUI-based testing.
Objective: This paper addresses this lack of knowledge through analysis of
the costs and factors associated with the maintenance of automated GUI-based
tests in industrial practice.
Method: An empirical study at two companies, Siemens and Saab, is reported
where interviews about, and empirical work with, Visual GUI Testing is
performed to acquire data about the technique's maintenance costs and
feasibility.
Results: 13 factors are observed that affect maintenance, e.g. tester
knowledge/experience and test case complexity. Further, statistical analysis
shows that developing new test scripts is costlier than maintenance but also
that frequent maintenance is less costly than infrequent, big bang maintenance.
In addition a cost model, based on previous work, is presented that estimates
the time to positive return on investment (ROI) of test automation compared to
manual testing.
Conclusions: It is concluded that test automation can lower overall software
development costs of a project whilst also having positive effects on software
quality. However, maintenance costs can still be considerable and the less time
a company currently spends on manual testing, the more time is required before
positive, economic, ROI is reached after automation
Hedonic Price Indexes for Personal Computer Operating Systems and Productivity Suites
Results of hedonic price regressions for personal computer operating systems and productivity suites advertised in PC World magazine by retail vendors during the time period 1984 to 2000 are reported. Among the quality attribute variables we use are new measures capturing the presence of network effects in personal computer operating systems, such as connectivity and compatibility, and product integration among components of productivity suites. Average annual growth rates of quality-adjusted prices of personal computer operating systems range from -15 to -18 percent, while those for productivity suites generally range between -13 and -16 percent. Price declines are generally greater in the latter half of the samples.
Towards more accurate real time testing
The languages Message Sequence Charts (MSC) [1], System Design Language1 (SDL) [2] and Testing and Test Control Notation Testing2 (TTCN-3) [3] have been developed for the design, modelling and testing of complex software systems. These languages have been developed to complement one another in the software development process. Each of these languages has features for describing, analysing or testing the real time properties of systems. Robust toolsets exist which provide integrated environments for the design, analysis and testing of systems, and it is claimed, for the complete development of real time systems. It was shown in [4] however, that there are fundamental problems with the SDL language and its associated tools for modelling and reasoning about real time systems. In this paper we present the limitations of TTCN-3 and propose recommendations which help minimise the timing inaccuracies that would otherwise occur in using the language directly
Application of shape grammar theory to underground rail station design and passenger evacuation
This paper outlines the development of a computer design environment that generates station âreferenceâ plans for analysis by designers at the project feasibility stage. The developed program uses the theoretical concept of shape grammar, based upon principles of recognition and replacement of a particular shape to enable the generation of station layouts. The developed novel shape grammar rules produce multiple plans of accurately sized infrastructure faster than by traditional means. A finite set of station infrastructure elements and a finite set of connection possibilities for them, directed by regulations and the logical processes of station usage, allows for increasingly complex composite shapes to be automatically produced, some of which are credible station layouts at âreferenceâ block plan level. The proposed method of generating shape grammar plans is aligned to London Underground standards, in particular to the Station Planning Standards and Guidelines 5th edition (SPSG5 2007) and the BS-7974 fire safety engineering process. Quantitative testing is via existing evacuation modelling software. The prototype system, named SGEvac, has both the scope and potential for redevelopment to any other countryâs design legislation
