    Nonlinear Analysis and Control of Interleaved Boost Converter Using Real-Time Cycle to Cycle Variable Slope Compensation

    Switched-mode power converters are inherently nonlinear and piecewise smooth systems that may exhibit a series of undesirable operations that can greatly reduce the converter's efficiency and lifetime. This paper presents a nonlinear analysis technique to investigate the influence of system parameters on the stability of interleaved boost converters. In this approach, Monodromy matrix that contains all the comprehensive information of converter parameters and control loop can be employed to fully reveal and understand the inherent nonlinear dynamics of interleaved boost converters, including the interaction effect of switching operation. Thereby not only the boundary conditions but also the relationship between stability margin and the parameters given can be intuitively studied by the eigenvalues of this matrix. Furthermore, by employing the knowledge gained from this analysis, a real-Time cycle to cycle variable slope compensation method is proposed to guarantee a satisfactory performance of the converter with an extended range of stable operation. Outcomes show that systems can regain stability by applying the proposed method within a few time periods of switching cycles. The numerical and analytical results validate the theoretical analysis, and experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach

    Multifrequency Averaging in Power Electronic Systems

    Power electronic systems have been widely used in the electrical power processing for applications with power levels ranging from less than one watt in battery-operated portable devices to more than megawatts in the converters, inverters and rectifiers of the utility power systems. These systems typically involve the passive elements such as inductors, capacitors, and resistors, the switching electronic components such as IGBTs, MOSFETS, and diodes, and other electronic circuits. Multifrequency averaging is one of the widely used modeling and simulation techniques today for the analysis and design of power electronic systems. This technique is capable of providing the average behavior as well as the ripple behavior of power electronic systems. This work begins with the extension of multifrequency averaging to represent uniformly sampled PWM converters. A new multifrequency averaging method of solving an observed issue with model stability is proposed and validated. Multifrequency averaging can also be applied to study the instability phenomenon in power electronic systems. In particular, a reduced-order multifrequency averaging method, along with a genetic algorithm based procedure, is proposed in this work to estimate the regions of attraction of power electronic converters. The performance of this method is shown by comparing the accuracy and efficiency with the existing methods. Finally, a new continuous-time multifrequency averaging method of representing discrete-time systems is proposed. The proposed method is applied to model digitally controlled PWM converters. Simulation and hardware results show that the proposed method is capable of predicting the average behavior as well as the ripple behavior of the closed-loop systems.     Input and output total currents characterization in BCM and CCM Interleaved Power Converters Under Inductance Mismatch

    This paper presents a complete characterization of input and output currents in interleaved power converters with inductance mismatch, operating in Boundary Conduction Mode (BCM) and Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM). The proposal allows to compute these currents in several interleaved converter topologies for the entire range of operating points, considering any number of phases and any inductance ratio. Input and output currents are recovered from the values obtained when adding the phase currents in the instants where the slopes change; values that are thus defined as key points. This methodology is based on the coincidences that exist between the instants of the phase current key points and those of total currents. By using the computed key points, ripple amplitude, rms value and harmonic content of input and output total currents for the entire range of operating points can be easily obtained. Simulations are conducted on a 5-phase boost converter and a 5-phase buck converter under different conditions in order to validate the proposal expressions. Experimental tests on a 5- phase buck converter are presented under different operation conditions to verify that the proposed method can be applied in real situation.Fil: Cervellini, María Paula.     Stability analysis and control of DC-DC converters using nonlinear methodologies

    PhD ThesisSwitched mode DC-DC converters exhibit a variety of complex behaviours in power electronics systems, such as sudden changes in operating region, bifurcation and chaotic operation. These unexpected random-like behaviours lead the converter to function outside of the normal periodic operation, increasing the potential to generate electromagnetic interference degrading conversion efficiency and in the worst-case scenario a loss of control leading to catastrophic failure. The rapidly growing market for switched mode power DC-DC converters demands more functionality at lower cost. In order to achieve this, DC-DC converters must operate reliably at all load conditions including boundary conditions. Over the last decade researchers have focused on these boundary conditions as well as nonlinear phenomena in power switching converters, leading to different theoretical and analytical approaches. However, the most interesting results are based on abstract mathematical forms, which cannot be directly applied to the design of practical systems for industrial applications. In this thesis, an analytic methodology for DC-DC converters is used to fully determine the inherent nonlinear dynamics. System stability can be indicated by the derived Monodromy matrix which includes comprehensive information concerning converter parameters and the control loop. This methodology can be applied in further stability analysis, such as of the influence of parasitic parameters or the effect of constant power load, and can furthermore be extended to interleaved operating converters to study the interaction effect of switching operations. From this analysis, advanced control algorithms are also developed to guarantee the satisfactory performance of the converter, avoiding nonlinear behaviours such as fast- and slowscale bifurcations.     Design and Advanced Model Predictive Control of Wide Bandgap Based Power Converters

    The field of power electronics (PE) is experiencing a revolution by harnessing the superior technical characteristics of wide-band gap (WBG) materials, namely Silicone Carbide (SiC) and Gallium Nitride (GaN). Semiconductor devices devised using WBG materials enable high temperature operation at reduced footprint, offer higher blocking voltages, and operate at much higher switching frequencies compared to conventional Silicon (Si) based counterpart. These characteristics are highly desirable as they allow converter designs for challenging applications such as more-electric-aircraft (MEA), electric vehicle (EV) power train, and the like. This dissertation presents designs of a WBG based power converters for a 1 MW, 1 MHz ultra-fast offboard EV charger, and 250 kW integrated modular motor drive (IMMD) for a MEA application. The goal of these designs is to demonstrate the superior power density and efficiency that are achievable by leveraging the power of SiC and GaN semiconductors. Ultra-fast EV charging is expected to alleviate the challenge of range anxiety , which is currently hindering the mass adoption of EVs in automotive market. The power converter design presented in the dissertation utilizes SiC MOSFETs embedded in a topology that is a modification of the conventional three-level (3L) active neutral-point clamped (ANPC) converter. A novel phase-shifted modulation scheme presented alongside the design allows converter operation at switching frequency of 1 MHz, thereby miniaturizing the grid-side filter to enhance the power density. IMMDs combine the power electronic drive and the electric machine into a single unit, and thus is an efficient solution to realize the electrification of aircraft. The IMMD design presented in the dissertation uses GaN devices embedded in a stacked modular full-bridge converter topology to individually drive each of the motor coils. Various issues and solutions, pertaining to paralleling of GaN devices to meet the high current requirements are also addressed in the thesis. Experimental prototypes of the SiC ultra-fast EV charger and GaN IMMD were built, and the results confirm the efficacy of the proposed designs. Model predictive control (MPC) is a nonlinear control technique that has been widely investigated for various power electronic applications in the past decade. MPC exploits the discrete nature of power converters to make control decisions using a cost function. The controller offers various advantages over, e.g., linear PI controllers in terms of fast dynamic response, identical performance at a reduced switching frequency, and ease of applicability to MIMO applications. This dissertation also investigates MPC for key power electronic applications, such as, grid-tied VSC with an LCL filter and multilevel VSI with an LC filter. By implementing high performance MPC controllers on WBG based power converters, it is possible to formulate designs capable of fast dynamic tracking, high power operation at reduced THD, and increased power density
