ITs in engineering education: joining efforts between SPEE and IGIP

    Get PDF
The International Society for Engineering Education (IGIP) and The Portuguese Society for Engineering Education (SPEE), the first being the oldest European Society for Engineering Education in Europe and the second the very young Society for Engineering Education in Portugal, have been intensifying the collaboration between the two societies as well as the exchange and dissemination of information about their relevant activities, whilst promoting understanding and cooperation between their respective members. One possible way is to create joint working groups, open to the members of both societies, on common topics of interest. In fact, both societies already kicked off this activity. The first initiative happened during the 1st World Engineering Education Flash Week (WEE), Lisbon, 2011. The SPEE-IGIP Flash Moment was a one day event integrated in the main Conference, which was dedicated to “Information & Communication Technologies in Engineering Education”. ITs allow the development of different teaching strategies which contribute to enhance the learning outcomes of students. ITs are also particularly suited to develop Life Long Learning tools, in a broad range of Engineering subjects, either open to the general market or oriented to a very specific public. Examples of teaching strategies involving ITs have been addressed during the Flash Moment SPEE-IGIP which took place during WEE, and some are described in detail in the present work

ABSTRACT An autonomous and multiplatform virtual laboratory for educational purposes is presented. The implemented platform includes a server with a SSH (Secure SHell) connection and a separated repository containing the virtual experiments. The programming of the experiments is implemented in Java language developed by means the EJS (Easy Java Simulation) tool and uses the Matlab language as an external computation engine. The virtual laboratory provides control experiments at University level. Two application examples are described, namely, a magnetic levitator and an inverted pendulum-cart system. The virtual laboratory has successfully been used for education and training of Electronics Engineering students. A discussion of the results of this e-learning experience is also presented.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

A Remote and Virtual Lab with Experiments for Secondary Education, Engineering and Lifelong Learning Courses

The Information and Communication Technology tools are nowadays invaluable to support e-learning and b-learning programs. The Remote and Virtual Laboratory in development at the Department of Informatics Engineering of the University of Coimbra (Portugal), RVL@DEI-UC, is a web-based platform that allows users to perform a large set of experiments in different areas and contexts, such as in education or training. This paper aims to describe the inherent potential of this platform in secondary education, engineering and lifelong learning courses. The conceptualization, architecture and implementation of the web platform for real and virtual experiments, which is remotely accessed using the Internet, are presented and the relevance of the labâ??s integration in an intelligent tutoring system is also highlighted, mainly in what regards the requirements of adaptation and customization to different usersâ?? profile in different learning contexts

Abstract. The present work shows the development of a design proposal for experimental practices or laboratories, in the context of a basic physics course. The specific discipline subject corresponds to the acoustic, related to the mechanical oscillations and waves study. Key objective is to support the proposal with Information and Communication Technologies that can be access freely through the Internet. Guides are developed for practical activities in line with a course in introductory physics, with a support site on the Internet. Three free tools are essential in the proposal: the Wordpress blog platform, the digital audio editing program Audacity, and the sound file repository Freesound.org. An initial application test was made with a group of eleventh grade students.Maestrí
