A relevance-focused search application for personalised ranking model
The assumption that usersâ profiles can be exploited by employing their implicit feedback for query expansion through a conceptual search to index documents has been proven in previous research. Several successful approaches leading to an improvement in the accuracy of personalised search results have been proposed. This paper extends existing approaches and combines the keyword-based and semantic-based features in order to provide further evidence of relevance-focused search application for Personalised Ranking Model (PRM). A description of the hybridisation of these approaches is provided and various issues arising in the context of computing the similarity between usersâ profiles are discussed. As compared to any traditional search system, the superiority of our approach lies in pushing significantly relevant documents to the top of the ranked lists. The results were empirically confirmed through human subjects who conducted several real-life Web searches
Exploration of applying a theory-based user classification model to inform personalised content-based image retrieval system design

After developing the user models, it is important to effectively utilise them in the design, development and evaluation of search systems to improve usersâ overall search experiences. However there is a lack of research has been done on the utilisation of the user models especially theory-based models, because of the challenges on the utilization methodologies when applying the model to different search systems. This paper explores and states how to apply an Information Foraging Theory (IFT) based user classification model called ISE to effectively identify userâs search characteristics and create user groups, based on an empirically-driven methodology for content-based image retrieval (CBIR) systems and how the preferences of different user types inform the personalized design of the CBIR systems
Enriching ontological user profiles with tagging history for multi-domain recommendations
Many advanced recommendation frameworks employ ontologies of various complexities to model individuals and items, providing a mechanism for the expression of user interests and the representation of item attributes. As a result, complex matching techniques can be applied to support individuals in the discovery of items according to explicit and implicit user preferences. Recently, the rapid adoption of Web2.0, and the proliferation of social networking sites, has resulted in more and more users providing an increasing amount of information about themselves that could be exploited for recommendation purposes. However, the unification of personal information with ontologies using the contemporary knowledge representation methods often associated with Web2.0 applications, such as community tagging, is a non-trivial task. In this paper, we propose a method for the unification of tags with ontologies by grounding tags to a shared representation in the form of Wordnet and Wikipedia. We incorporate individuals' tagging history into their ontological profiles by matching tags with ontology concepts. This approach is preliminary evaluated by extending an existing news recommendation system with user tagging histories harvested from popular social networking sites
An Online Framework for Supporting the Evaluation of Personalised Information Retrieval Systems
Scope - Personalised Information Retrieval (PIR) has been gaining attention because it investigates intelligent ways for enhancing content delivery. Web users can have personalised services and more accurate information. Problem - Several PIR systems have been proposed in the literature; however, they have not been properly tested or evaluated. Proposal â The authors propose a generally applicable web-based interface, which provides PIR developers and evaluators with: i) implicit recommendations on how to evaluate a specific PIR system; ii) a repository containing studies on user-centred and layered evaluation studies; iii) recommendations on how to best combine different evaluation methods, metrics and measurement criteria in order to most effectively evaluate their system; iv) a UCE methodology which details how to apply existing UCE techniques; v) a taxonomy of evaluations of adaptive systems; and vi) interface translation support (49 languages supported)
Event and map content personalisation in a mobile and context-aware environment.
Effective methods for information access are of the greatest importance for our modern lives â particularly with respect to handheld devices. Personalisation is one such method which models a users characteristics to deliver content more focused to the users needs. The emerging area of sophisticated mobile computing devices has started to inspire new forms of personalised systems that include aspects of the persons contextual environment. This thesis seeks to understand the role of personalisation and context, to evaluate the effectiveness of context for content personalisation and to investigate the event and map content domain for mobile usage. The work presented in this thesis has three parts: The first part is a user experiment on context that investigated the contextual attributes of time, location and interest, with respect to participants perception of their usefulness. Results show highly dynamic and interconnected effects of context on participants usefulness ratings. In the second part, these results were applied to create a predictive model of context that was related to attribution theory and then combined with an information retrieval score to create a weighted personalisation model. In the third part of this work, the personalisation model was applied in a mobile experiment. Participants solved situational search tasks using a (i) non-personalized and a (ii) personalized mobile information system, and rating entertainment events based on usefulness. Results showed that the personalised system delivered about 20% more useful content to the mobile user than the non-personalised system, with some indication for reduced search effort in terms of time and the amount of queries per task. The work presented provides evidence for the promising potential of context to facilitate personalised information delivery to users of mobile devices. Overall, it serves as an example of an investigation into the effectiveness of context from multiple angles and provides a potential link to some of the aspects of psychology as a potential source for a deeper understanding of contextual processes in humans

CHORUS Deliverable 2.1: State of the Art on Multimedia Search Engines
Based on the information provided by European projects and national initiatives related to multimedia search as well as domains experts that participated in the CHORUS Think-thanks and workshops, this document reports on the state of the art related to multimedia content search from, a technical, and socio-economic perspective.
The technical perspective includes an up to date view on content based indexing and retrieval technologies, multimedia search in the context of mobile devices and peer-to-peer networks, and an overview of current evaluation and benchmark inititiatives to measure the performance of multimedia search engines.
From a socio-economic perspective we inventorize the impact and legal consequences of these technical advances and point out future directions of research

Dynamic User Profiling for Search Personalisation
The performance of a personalised search system largely depends upon the ability to build user profiles which accurately capture the user's search interests. However, many approaches to user profiling have neglected the dynamic nature of the user's search interests. That is, a user's search interests typically change in response to their interactions with the search system during the search period. Therefore, a profile built for previous searches might not reflect that user's current search interests.
A widely used type of profile represents the topical interests of the user. In these cases, a typical approach is to build a user profile using topics discussed in documents which the user has found relevant, and where the topics are obtained from a human-generated ontology or directory. However, a key limitation of these approaches is that many documents may not contain the topics covered in the ontology. Moreover, the human-generated ontology requires manual effort to determine the correct categories for each document.
In this research, we address these problems by proposing novel techniques for dynamically building user profiles which capture the user's search interests changing over time. Instead of using a human-generated ontology, we use a topic modelling technique (Latent Dirichlet Allocation) for unsupervised extraction of the topics from documents. To dynamically build user profiles, we make two important assumptions. First, that the group of users with whom a user shares a set of common interests may be different depending upon the particular topic of interest. Second, the more recently clicked/relevant documents tell us more about the user's current search interests.
To test these assumptions, we develop and implement dynamic user profiles, and then evaluate them on two search personalisation tasks. Our first chosen task is personalising search results returned by a Web search engine, and the second is the task of personalising query suggestions made by an Intranet search engine. We found that dynamic user profiles can significantly improve the ranking quality over well-established baselines
CHORUS Deliverable 2.2: Second report - identification of multi-disciplinary key issues for gap analysis toward EU multimedia search engines roadmap
After addressing the state-of-the-art during the first year of Chorus and establishing the existing landscape in
multimedia search engines, we have identified and analyzed gaps within European research effort during our second year.
In this period we focused on three directions, notably technological issues, user-centred issues and use-cases and socio-
economic and legal aspects. These were assessed by two central studies: firstly, a concerted vision of functional breakdown
of generic multimedia search engine, and secondly, a representative use-cases descriptions with the related discussion on
requirement for technological challenges. Both studies have been carried out in cooperation and consultation with the
community at large through EC concertation meetings (multimedia search engines cluster), several meetings with our
Think-Tank, presentations in international conferences, and surveys addressed to EU projects coordinators as well as
National initiatives coordinators. Based on the obtained feedback we identified two types of gaps, namely core
technological gaps that involve research challenges, and âenablersâ, which are not necessarily technical research
challenges, but have impact on innovation progress. New socio-economic trends are presented as well as emerging legal
challenges
