Technology-enhanced Personalised Learning: Untangling the Evidence
Technology-enhanced personalised learning is not yet common in Germany, which is why we have tasked scientists with summarising the current status of international research on the matter. This study demonstrates the great potential of technology in implementing effective personalised learning. Nevertheless, it has not been assessed yet whether the practical implementation actually works: Even in countries such as the U.S., which lead the way in using techology in classroom settings, hardly any evaluation studies have been done to prove the effectiveness of technology-enhanced personalised learning. In the light of the above, the authors make recommendations for actions to be taken in Germany to make best use of the potential of technology in providing individual support and guidance to students

attracted much attention as an integral part of intelligent education. China,
the United States, the European Union, and others have put forward the
importance of personalized learning in recent years, emphasizing the
realization of the organic combination of large-scale education and
personalized training. The development of a personalized learning system
oriented to learners' preferences and suited to learners' needs should be
accelerated. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the current
situation of personalized learning and its key role in education. It discusses
the research on personalized learning from multiple perspectives, combining
definitions, goals, and related educational theories to provide an in-depth
understanding of personalized learning from an educational perspective,
analyzing the implications of different theories on personalized learning, and
highlighting the potential of personalized learning to meet the needs of
individuals and to enhance their abilities. Data applications and assessment
indicators in personalized learning are described in detail, providing a solid
data foundation and evaluation system for subsequent research. Meanwhile, we
start from both student modeling and recommendation algorithms and deeply
analyze the cognitive and non-cognitive perspectives and the contribution of
personalized recommendations to personalized learning. Finally, we explore the
challenges and future trajectories of personalized learning. This review
provides a multidimensional analysis of personalized learning through a more
comprehensive study, providing academics and practitioners with cutting-edge
explorations to promote continuous progress in the field of personalized
learning.Comment: 82 pages,5 figure
The Role of Library and Information Professionals in Creating a Smart learning Environment using Modern Technologies and Innovations in the COVID-19 Era: Introducing Individuals’ Uniqueness Consideration
With the spread of COVID-19 across the globe, a lot changed, diversified, abruptly halted or modified. Different sectors of the different countries were not left out in these changes. Nigeria learning system was also greatly affected and as such learning institutions across the nation had to be shut down till further notice. This begged to answer the question if the Nigeria learning situation has been improved enough to accommodate the technological changes that came with it. There was also the need for Library and Informational Science (LIS) professionals to step in to save the learning situation by creating a smart learning environment for the individuals while considering their uniqueness.
The need for learning environments to grow with the technological changes around the globe is on the increase and Nigeria is not left out at all. With the advent of modern technologies on the rise, learning environments have been developed and made flexible and efficient enough for learners to learn effectively in. Learners make use of smart technologies and have access to digital resources through wireless network and to immerse in both personalized and seamless learning. With the exponential technological advances, anything could be instrumented, interconnected, and infused with intelligent design, so is learning and the learning environment.
This study was conceived to examine how the Covid-19 pandemic affected learning and brought about the need for upgrades in learning environments. It considers the roles of LIS professionals in creating a smart learning environment. It seeks to examine the technologies and innovations used in creating a smart learning environment as well as challenges associated with the establishment of a smart learning environment by LIS professionals. Finally, the way forward is proffered on how Nigeria can create this smart learning environment as the onus lies on the LIS professionals in the information society

Promoting Sustainable Behavior Using Serious Games: SeAdventure for Ocean Literacy
In the environmental sector, in recent years, policies and governance of marine issues have seen
greater enhancement of participatory and community-based processes (for example the Blue Growth Actions
of the Interreg Med Program of the European Union). The greater involvement of citizens in the processes
and policies of the sea can greatly benefit the survival of the marine environment and support reforms, since
most environmental problems are caused by human behavior. Changes in individual behaviors are desirable
to ensure sustainable use of the ocean and its resources. These changes are possible only if there is an
improvement in people’s knowledge and awareness since the childhood. Ocean literacy interventions will
allow people to understand their responsibilities towards the oceans and their health. For this reason, it is
necessary to promote sustainable behavior changes using new educational approaches that can be effective
with young pupils. The research presents a serious game and an explainer video, used in order to introduce
the problem of marine litter, one of the main dangers for the marine species. The aim of the serious game was
to enhance ocean literacy with a particular attention to the biodiversity of the Apulian and Mediterranean sea
to raise children’s awareness of the issue of caring for life in the sea. The measure of learning effectiveness
confirmed that the knowledge gained can be actually acquired by children using new technologies, in general,
and serious games in particular
Context based learning: a survey of contextual indicators for personalized and adaptive learning recommendations. A pedagogical and technical perspective
Learning personalization has proven its effectiveness in enhancing learner
performance. Therefore, modern digital learning platforms have been
increasingly depending on recommendation systems to offer learners personalized
suggestions of learning materials. Learners can utilize those recommendations
to acquire certain skills for the labor market or for their formal education.
Personalization can be based on several factors, such as personal preference,
social connections or learning context. In an educational environment, the
learning context plays an important role in generating sound recommendations,
which not only fulfill the preferences of the learner, but also correspond to
the pedagogical goals of the learning process. This is because a learning
context describes the actual situation of the learner at the moment of
requesting a learning recommendation. It provides information about the learner
current state of knowledge, goal orientation, motivation, needs, available
time, and other factors that reflect their status and may influence how
learning recommendations are perceived and utilized. Context aware recommender
systems have the potential to reflect the logic that a learning expert may
follow in recommending materials to students with respect to their status and
needs. In this paper, we review the state-of-the-art approaches for defining a
user learning-context. We provide an overview of the definitions available, as
well as the different factors that are considered when defining a context.
Moreover, we further investigate the links between those factors and their
pedagogical foundations in learning theories. We aim to provide a comprehensive
understanding of contextualized learning from both pedagogical and technical
points of view. By combining those two viewpoints, we aim to bridge a gap
between both domains, in terms of contextualizing learning recommendations
Towards Designing AI-Enabled Adaptive Learning Systems
Paper I, III, IV and V are not available as a part of the dissertation due to the copyright.Among the many innovations driven by artificial intelligence (AI) are more advanced learning systems known as AI-enabled adaptive learning systems (AI-ALS). AI-ALS are platforms that adapt to the learning strategies of students by modifying the order and difficulty level of learning tasks based on the abilities of students. These systems support adaptive learning, which is the personalization of learning for students in a learning system, such that the system can deal with individual differences in aptitude. AI-ALS are gaining traction due to their ability to deliver learning content and adapt to individual student needs. While the potential and importance of such systems have been well documented, the actual implementation of AI-ALS and other AI-based learning systems in real-world teaching and learning settings has not reached the effectiveness envisaged on the level of theory. Moreover, AI-ALS lack transferable insights and codification of knowledge on their design and development. The reason for this is that many previous studies were experimental. Thus, this dissertation aims to narrow the gap between experimental research and field practice by providing practical design statements that can be implemented in effective AI-ALSs.publishedVersio
