    An Enhancement to the IEEE 802.11e EDCA Providing QoS Guarantees

    One of the challenges that must be overcome to realize the practical benefits of ad hoc networks is quality of service (QoS). However, the IEEE 802.11 standard, which undeniably is the most widespread wireless technology of choice for WLANs and ad hoc networks, does not address this issue. In order to support applications with QoS requirements, the upcoming IEEE 802.11e standard enhances the original IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol by introducing a new coordination function which has both contention-based and contention-free medium access methods. In this paper, we consider the contention-based medium access method, the EDCA, and propose an extension to it such that it can be used to provide QoS guarantees in WLANs operating in ad hoc mode. Our solution is fully distributed, uses admission control to regulate the usage of resources and gives stations with high-priority traffic streams an opportunity to reserve time for collision-free access to the medium

    Adaptive medium access control for VoIP services in IEEE 802.11 WLANs

    Abstract- Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is an important service with strict Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). The popular Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) of IEEE 802.11 Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol adopts a Binary Exponential Back-off (BEB) procedure to reduce the packet collision probability in WLANs. In DCF, the size of contention window is doubled upon a collision regardless of the network loads. This paper presents an adaptive MAC scheme to improve the QoS of VoIP in WLANs. This scheme applies a threshold of the collision rate to switch between two different functions for increasing the size of contention window based on the status of network loads. The performance of this scheme is investigated and compared to the original DCF using the network simulator NS-2. The performance results reveal that the adaptive scheme is able to achieve the higher throughput and medium utilization as well as lower access delay and packet loss probability than the original DCF

    Applications of Repeated Games in Wireless Networks: A Survey

    A repeated game is an effective tool to model interactions and conflicts for players aiming to achieve their objectives in a long-term basis. Contrary to static noncooperative games that model an interaction among players in only one period, in repeated games, interactions of players repeat for multiple periods; and thus the players become aware of other players' past behaviors and their future benefits, and will adapt their behavior accordingly. In wireless networks, conflicts among wireless nodes can lead to selfish behaviors, resulting in poor network performances and detrimental individual payoffs. In this paper, we survey the applications of repeated games in different wireless networks. The main goal is to demonstrate the use of repeated games to encourage wireless nodes to cooperate, thereby improving network performances and avoiding network disruption due to selfish behaviors. Furthermore, various problems in wireless networks and variations of repeated game models together with the corresponding solutions are discussed in this survey.     Multiple preemptive EDCA for emergency medium access control in distributed WLANs

    The increasingly use of wireless local area networks (WLANs) in public safety and emergency network services demands for a strict quality of service (QoS) guarantee especially a large number of users report an emergency for immediate channel access. Unfortunately, the traditional IEEE 802.11e-based enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) does not support a strict QoS guarantee for life saving emergency traffic under high loads. Previous studies have attempted to enhance the performance of EDCA called the Channel Preemtive EDCA (CP-EDCA) which is a promising idea to support emergency traffic in WLANs. However, CP-EDCA supports a single emergency traffic only (i.e. no emergency service differentiation) with high delays for increased traffic loads. To overcome this problem, we propose a class of EDCA protocol called Multiple Preemption EDCA (MPEDCA) as a candidate to support multiple emergency traffics under high loads. Each MP-EDCA node can support up to four emergency traffics (life, health, property and environment) with different priorities in addition to support background (non-emergency) traffic. The proposed protocol privileged the high priority life-saving emergency traffic to preempt the services of low priority ones without much starvation in the network to maintain a strict QoS guarantee. The paper evaluates the performance of MPEDCA through an extensive analysis of simulation outcome. The results obtained show that MP-EDCA outperforms CP-EDCA in achieving lower medium access control and emergency node delays
