    Artificial neural network model for arrival time computation in gate level circuits

    Advances in the VLSI process technology lead to variations in the process parameters. These process variations severely affect the delay computation of a digital circuit. Under such variations, the various delays, i.e. net delay, gate delay, etc., are no longer deterministic. They are random in nature and are assumed to be probabilistic. They keep changing, based on factors such as process, voltage, temperature, and a few others. This calls for efficient tools to perform timing checks on a design. This work presents a technique to compute the arrival time of a digital circuit. The arrival time (AT) is computed using two different timing engines, namely, static timing analysis (STA) and statistical static timing analysis (SSTA). This work also aims to eliminate number of false paths. It uses a fast and efficient filtering method by utilizing ATPG stuck-at faults and path delay faults. ISCAS-89 benchmark circuits are used for implementation. The results obtained using the probabilistic approach are more accurate than the conventional STA. It has been verified with an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model. The arrival time calculated using SSTA shows 7% improvement over that of STA. The absolute error is reduced twofold in the case of the ANN model for SSTA

    Resilient random modulo cache memories for probabilistically-analyzable real-time systems

    Fault tolerance has often been assessed separately in safety-related real-time systems, which may lead to inefficient solutions. Recently, Measurement-Based Probabilistic Timing Analysis (MBPTA) has been proposed to estimate Worst-Case Execution Time (WCET) on high performance hardware. The intrinsic probabilistic nature of MBPTA-commpliant hardware matches perfectly with the random nature of hardware faults. Joint WCET analysis and reliability assessment has been done so far for some MBPTA-compliant designs, but not for the most promising cache design: random modulo. In this paper we perform, for the first time, an assessment of the aging-robustness of random modulo and propose new implementations preserving the key properties of random modulo, a.k.a. low critical path impact, low miss rates and MBPTA compliance, while enhancing reliability in front of aging by achieving a better ā€“ yet random ā€“ activity distribution across cache sets.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Towards Distributed and Adaptive Detection and Localisation of Network Faults

    We present a statistical probing-approach to distributed fault-detection in networked systems, based on autonomous configuration of algorithm parameters. Statistical modelling is used for detection and localisation of network faults. A detected fault is isolated to a node or link by collaborative fault-localisation. From local measurements obtained through probing between nodes, probe response delay and packet drop are modelled via parameter estimation for each link. Estimated model parameters are used for autonomous configuration of algorithm parameters, related to probe intervals and detection mechanisms. Expected fault-detection performance is formulated as a cost instead of specific parameter values, significantly reducing configuration efforts in a distributed system. The benefit offered by using our algorithm is fault-detection with increased certainty based on local measurements, compared to other methods not taking observed network conditions into account. We investigate the algorithm performance for varying user parameters and failure conditions. The simulation results indicate that more than 95 % of the generated faults can be detected with few false alarms. At least 80 % of the link faults and 65 % of the node faults are correctly localised. The performance can be improved by parameter adjustments and by using alternative paths for communication of algorithm control messages

    Mutation testing from probabilistic finite state machines

    Mutation testing traditionally involves mutating a program in order to produce a set of mutants and using these mutants in order to either estimate the effectiveness of a test suite or to drive test generation. Recently, however, this approach has been applied to specifications such as those written as finite state machines. This paper extends mutation testing to finite state machine models in which transitions have associated probabilities. The paper describes several ways of mutating a probabilistic finite state machine (PFSM) and shows how test sequences that distinguish between a PFSM and its mutants can be generated. Testing then involves applying each test sequence multiple times, observing the resultant output sequences and using results from statistical sampling theory in order to compare the observed frequency of each output sequence with that expected

    Dependability checking with StoCharts: Is train radio reliable enough for trains?

    Performance, dependability and quality of service (QoS) are prime aspects of the UML modelling domain. To capture these aspects effectively in the design phase, we have recently proposed STOCHARTS, a conservative extension of UML statechart diagrams. In this paper, we apply the STOCHART formalism to a safety critical design problem. We model a part of the European Train Control System specification, focusing on the risks of wireless communication failures in future high-speed cross-European trains. Stochastic model checking with the model checker PROVER enables us to derive constraints under which the central quality requirements are satisfied by the STOCHART model. The paper illustrates the flexibility and maturity of STOCHARTS to model real problems in safety critical system design
