Computing parametric rational generating functions with a primal Barvinok algorithm
Computations with Barvinok's short rational generating functions are
traditionally being performed in the dual space, to avoid the combinatorial
complexity of inclusion--exclusion formulas for the intersecting proper faces
of cones. We prove that, on the level of indicator functions of polyhedra,
there is no need for using inclusion--exclusion formulas to account for
boundary effects: All linear identities in the space of indicator functions can
be purely expressed using half-open variants of the full-dimensional polyhedra
in the identity. This gives rise to a practically efficient, parametric
Barvinok algorithm in the primal space.Comment: 16 pages, 1 figure; v2: Minor corrections, new example and summary of

Computation of the highest coefficients of weighted Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of rational polyhedra
This article concerns the computational problem of counting the lattice
points inside convex polytopes, when each point must be counted with a weight
associated to it. We describe an efficient algorithm for computing the highest
degree coefficients of the weighted Ehrhart quasi-polynomial for a rational
simple polytope in varying dimension, when the weights of the lattice points
are given by a polynomial function h. Our technique is based on a refinement of
an algorithm of A. Barvinok [Computing the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of a
rational simplex, Math. Comp. 75 (2006), pp. 1449--1466] in the unweighted case
(i.e., h = 1). In contrast to Barvinok's method, our method is local, obtains
an approximation on the level of generating functions, handles the general
weighted case, and provides the coefficients in closed form as step polynomials
of the dilation. To demonstrate the practicality of our approach we report on
computational experiments which show even our simple implementation can compete
with state of the art software.Comment: 34 pages, 2 figure
Parametric Polyhedra with at least Lattice Points: Their Semigroup Structure and the k-Frobenius Problem
Given an integral matrix , the well-studied affine semigroup
\mbox{ Sg} (A)=\{ b : Ax=b, \ x \in {\mathbb Z}^n, x \geq 0\} can be
stratified by the number of lattice points inside the parametric polyhedra
. Such families of parametric polyhedra appear in
many areas of combinatorics, convex geometry, algebra and number theory. The
key themes of this paper are: (1) A structure theory that characterizes
precisely the subset \mbox{ Sg}_{\geq k}(A) of all vectors b \in \mbox{
Sg}(A) such that has at least solutions. We
demonstrate that this set is finitely generated, it is a union of translated
copies of a semigroup which can be computed explicitly via Hilbert bases
computations. Related results can be derived for those right-hand-side vectors
for which has exactly solutions or fewer
than solutions. (2) A computational complexity theory. We show that, when
, are fixed natural numbers, one can compute in polynomial time an
encoding of \mbox{ Sg}_{\geq k}(A) as a multivariate generating function,
using a short sum of rational functions. As a consequence, one can identify all
right-hand-side vectors of bounded norm that have at least solutions. (3)
Applications and computation for the -Frobenius numbers. Using Generating
functions we prove that for fixed the -Frobenius number can be
computed in polynomial time. This generalizes a well-known result for by
R. Kannan. Using some adaptation of dynamic programming we show some practical
computations of -Frobenius numbers and their relatives
Presburger arithmetic, rational generating functions, and quasi-polynomials
Presburger arithmetic is the first-order theory of the natural numbers with
addition (but no multiplication). We characterize sets that can be defined by a
Presburger formula as exactly the sets whose characteristic functions can be
represented by rational generating functions; a geometric characterization of
such sets is also given. In addition, if p=(p_1,...,p_n) are a subset of the
free variables in a Presburger formula, we can define a counting function g(p)
to be the number of solutions to the formula, for a given p. We show that every
counting function obtained in this way may be represented as, equivalently,
either a piecewise quasi-polynomial or a rational generating function. Finally,
we translate known computational complexity results into this setting and
discuss open directions.Comment: revised, including significant additions explaining computational

Software for Exact Integration of Polynomials over Polyhedra
We are interested in the fast computation of the exact value of integrals of
polynomial functions over convex polyhedra. We present speed ups and extensions
of the algorithms presented in previous work. We present the new software
implementation and provide benchmark computations. The computation of integrals
of polynomials over polyhedral regions has many applications; here we
demonstrate our algorithmic tools solving a challenge from combinatorial voting
theory.Comment: Major updat
Counting Points and Hilbert Series in String Theory
The problem of counting points is revisited from the perspective of reflexive
4-dimensional polytopes. As an application, the Hilbert series of the
473,800,776 reflexive polytopes (equivalently, their Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces)
are computed.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures. Contribution to the Max Kreuzer memorial volum
Combinatorics and Geometry of Transportation Polytopes: An Update
A transportation polytope consists of all multidimensional arrays or tables
of non-negative real numbers that satisfy certain sum conditions on subsets of
the entries. They arise naturally in optimization and statistics, and also have
interest for discrete mathematics because permutation matrices, latin squares,
and magic squares appear naturally as lattice points of these polytopes.
In this paper we survey advances on the understanding of the combinatorics
and geometry of these polyhedra and include some recent unpublished results on
the diameter of graphs of these polytopes. In particular, this is a thirty-year
update on the status of a list of open questions last visited in the 1984 book
by Yemelichev, Kovalev and Kravtsov and the 1986 survey paper of Vlach.Comment: 35 pages, 13 figure
Complexity of short Presburger arithmetic
We study complexity of short sentences in Presburger arithmetic (Short-PA).
Here by "short" we mean sentences with a bounded number of variables,
quantifiers, inequalities and Boolean operations; the input consists only of
the integers involved in the inequalities. We prove that assuming Kannan's
partition can be found in polynomial time, the satisfiability of Short-PA
sentences can be decided in polynomial time. Furthermore, under the same
assumption, we show that the numbers of satisfying assignments of short
Presburger sentences can also be computed in polynomial time
