    Wearable Communications in 5G: Challenges and Enabling Technologies

    As wearable devices become more ingrained in our daily lives, traditional communication networks primarily designed for human being-oriented applications are facing tremendous challenges. The upcoming 5G wireless system aims to support unprecedented high capacity, low latency, and massive connectivity. In this article, we evaluate key challenges in wearable communications. A cloud/edge communication architecture that integrates the cloud radio access network, software defined network, device to device communications, and cloud/edge technologies is presented. Computation offloading enabled by this multi-layer communications architecture can offload computation-excessive and latency-stringent applications to nearby devices through device to device communications or to nearby edge nodes through cellular or other wireless technologies. Critical issues faced by wearable communications such as short battery life, limited computing capability, and stringent latency can be greatly alleviated by this cloud/edge architecture. Together with the presented architecture, current transmission and networking technologies, including non-orthogonal multiple access, mobile edge computing, and energy harvesting, can greatly enhance the performance of wearable communication in terms of spectral efficiency, energy efficiency, latency, and connectivity.Comment: This work has been accepted by IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazin

    Managing obesity through mobile phone applications: a state-of-the-art review from a user-centred design perspective

    Evidence has shown that the trend of increasing obesity rates has continued in the last decade. Mobile phone applications, benefiting from their ubiquity, have been increasingly used to address this issue. In order to increase the applications’ acceptance and success, a design and development process that focuses on users, such as User-Centred Design, is necessary. This paper reviews reported studies that concern the design and development of mobile phone applications to prevent obesity, and analyses them from a User-Centred Design perspective. Based on the review results, strengths and weaknesses of the existing studies were identified. Identified strengths included: evidence of the inclusion of multidisciplinary skills and perspectives; user involvement in studies; and the adoption of iterative design practices. Weaknesses included the lack of specificity in the selection of end-users and inconsistent evaluation protocols. The review was concluded by outlining issues and research areas that need to be addressed in the future, including: greater understanding of the effectiveness of sharing data between peers; privacy; and guidelines for designing for behavioural change through mobile phone applications

    AbstractThe Mobile Motion Advisor (MMA) is a mobile feedback system designed to support high school students by giving them instructions during their physical exercises based on the integration of up-to-date sensor, data transmission and processing technologies to provide optimal training assistance. The aim is to give individually customized exercise instructions. We expect students to develop a positive attitude towards physical exercising when they do not experience frustration due to overstrain.     Mobile Application Development for Senior Citizens

    Aged care is a significant issue which concerns all governments. In order to provide assistance and provide quality of life to senior citizens, enormous resources are invested by the government each year. A significant proportion of the investment is used to provide a range of services for senior citizens who stay at home. Since providing quality aged care is an ongoing and complex process, there is a desperate need to develop innovative solutions, which will benefit society at large. Although modern information technology products are changing the lifestyle of younger generations, they have much less impact on old people. This research therefore undertakes a novel study into the question of: What mobile applications can be developed on smartphone devices to improve senior citizens’ quality of lives. By using a requirement framework developed from the literature, this study also explored the availability and suitability of current mobile applications which are available from IPhone Application shops, Nokia OVI stores and other sources in order to identify possible directions for future mobile application development for aged care purposes

    Personalized And Situation-Aware Recommendations For Runners

    The project uService investigates the transformation of a mobile user into a service super prosumer, i.e., a producer, provider and consumer of services at the same time. The goal is to develop a platform which enables a user to create, discover and consume mobile services anywhere and at any time on the mobile device. uRun is an application scenario of the project in the field of mobile health and fitness. The uRun framework provides a mobile assistance system particularly for runners, which combines Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 technologies and personalized and situation-aware recommendation mechanisms. The ability to create individual and mobile health and fitness services as well as a personalized and situation-aware assistance system based on a semantic knowledge base are considered to provide an edge over existing consumer-centric health care systems. In this article, we describe the recommendation mechanism and the incorporation of semantic knowledge for the uService platform and the uRun framework
