Deploying AI Frameworks on Secure HPC Systems with Containers
The increasing interest in the usage of Artificial Intelligence techniques
(AI) from the research community and industry to tackle "real world" problems,
requires High Performance Computing (HPC) resources to efficiently compute and
scale complex algorithms across thousands of nodes. Unfortunately, typical data
scientists are not familiar with the unique requirements and characteristics of
HPC environments. They usually develop their applications with high-level
scripting languages or frameworks such as TensorFlow and the installation
process often requires connection to external systems to download open source
software during the build. HPC environments, on the other hand, are often based
on closed source applications that incorporate parallel and distributed
computing API's such as MPI and OpenMP, while users have restricted
administrator privileges, and face security restrictions such as not allowing
access to external systems. In this paper we discuss the issues associated with
the deployment of AI frameworks in a secure HPC environment and how we

High Energy Physics Forum for Computational Excellence: Working Group Reports (I. Applications Software II. Software Libraries and Tools III. Systems)
Computing plays an essential role in all aspects of high energy physics. As
computational technology evolves rapidly in new directions, and data throughput
and volume continue to follow a steep trend-line, it is important for the HEP
community to develop an effective response to a series of expected challenges.
In order to help shape the desired response, the HEP Forum for Computational
Excellence (HEP-FCE) initiated a roadmap planning activity with two key
overlapping drivers -- 1) software effectiveness, and 2) infrastructure and
expertise advancement. The HEP-FCE formed three working groups, 1) Applications
Software, 2) Software Libraries and Tools, and 3) Systems (including systems
software), to provide an overview of the current status of HEP computing and to
present findings and opportunities for the desired HEP computational roadmap.
The final versions of the reports are combined in this document, and are
presented along with introductory material.Comment: 72 page
EviPlant: An efficient digital forensic challenge creation, manipulation and distribution solution
Education and training in digital forensics requires a variety of suitable
challenge corpora containing realistic features including regular
wear-and-tear, background noise, and the actual digital traces to be discovered
during investigation. Typically, the creation of these challenges requires
overly arduous effort on the part of the educator to ensure their viability.
Once created, the challenge image needs to be stored and distributed to a class
for practical training. This storage and distribution step requires significant
time and resources and may not even be possible in an online/distance learning
scenario due to the data sizes involved. As part of this paper, we introduce a
more capable methodology and system as an alternative to current approaches.
EviPlant is a system designed for the efficient creation, manipulation, storage
and distribution of challenges for digital forensics education and training.
The system relies on the initial distribution of base disk images, i.e., images
containing solely base operating systems. In order to create challenges for
students, educators can boot the base system, emulate the desired activity and
perform a "diffing" of resultant image and the base image. This diffing process
extracts the modified artefacts and associated metadata and stores them in an
"evidence package". Evidence packages can be created for different personae,
different wear-and-tear, different emulated crimes, etc., and multiple evidence
packages can be distributed to students and integrated into the base images. A
number of additional applications in digital forensic challenge creation for
tool testing and validation, proficiency testing, and malware analysis are also

This is the ninth in the series of highly successful international workshops on the Teaching, Learning and Assessment of Databases (TLAD 2011), which once again is held as a workshop of BNCOD 2011 - the 28th British National Conference on Databases. TLAD 2011 is held on the 11th July at Manchester University, just before BNCOD, and hopes to be just as successful as its predecessors.The teaching of databases is central to all Computing Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems and Information Technology courses, and this year, the workshop aims to continue the tradition of bringing together both database teachers and researchers, in order to share good learning, teaching and assessment practice and experience, and further the growing community amongst database academics. As well as attracting academics from the UK community, the workshop has also been successful in attracting academics from the wider international community, through serving on the programme committee, and attending and presenting papers.Due to the healthy number of high quality submissions this year, the workshop will present eight peer reviewed papers. Of these, six will be presented as full papers and two as short papers. These papers cover a number of themes, including: the teaching of data mining and data warehousing, databases and the cloud, and novel uses of technology in teaching and assessment. It is expected that these papers will stimulate discussion at the workshop itself and beyond. This year, the focus on providing a forum for discussion is enhanced through a panel discussion on assessment in database modules, with David Nelson (of the University of Sunderland), Al Monger (of Southampton Solent University) and Charles Boisvert (of Sheffield Hallam University) as the expert panel

Building an Emulation Environment for Cyber Security Analyses of Complex Networked Systems
Computer networks are undergoing a phenomenal growth, driven by the rapidly
increasing number of nodes constituting the networks. At the same time, the
number of security threats on Internet and intranet networks is constantly
growing, and the testing and experimentation of cyber defense solutions
requires the availability of separate, test environments that best emulate the
complexity of a real system. Such environments support the deployment and
monitoring of complex mission-driven network scenarios, thus enabling the study
of cyber defense strategies under real and controllable traffic and attack
scenarios. In this paper, we propose a methodology that makes use of a
combination of techniques of network and security assessment, and the use of
cloud technologies to build an emulation environment with adjustable degree of
affinity with respect to actual reference networks or planned systems. As a
byproduct, starting from a specific study case, we collected a dataset
consisting of complete network traces comprising benign and malicious traffic,
which is feature-rich and publicly available
