    Multi-objective optimal design of a toroidally wound radial-flux halbach permanent magnet array limited angle torque motor

    This paper presents the modeling, optimization and validation of a toroidally wound radial-flux Halbach array permanent magnet limited angle torque motor. A fully parameterized and flexible equivalent magnetic circuit model of the proposed motor, which is arranged in matrix form by means of Kirchhoff’s current laws for computational efficiency and ease of extension, is introduced for preliminary design. To optimize the design, a multi-objective optimization process is carried out and the multi-objective particle swarm optimization method is used to obtain the Pareto front of the desired objectives. An approved solution in Pareto front is selected and validated by finite element analysis method. A prototype based on the final design is built and tested. The experiment results further underpin the effectiveness of the proposed design and optimization approach

    Induction motors versus permanent magnet actuators for aerospace applications

    This paper introduces a comparative study on the design of aerospace actuators concerning Induction Motor (IM) and Permanent Magnet Motor (PMM) technologies. In the analysis undertaken, the two candidate configurations are evaluated in terms of both their electromagnetic and thermal behavior in a combined manner. On a first step, the basic dimensioning of the actuators and their fundamental operational characteristics are determined via a time-stepping Finite Element (FE) analysis. The consideration of the thermal robustness of the proposed motor configurations is integrated in the design procedure, through the appropriate handling of their respective constraints. As a result, all comparisons are carried out on a common thermal evacuation basis. On a second step, a single objective optimization procedure is employed, considering several performance and efficiency indexes using appropriate weights. Manufacturing and construction related costs for both investigated topologies are considered employing specific penalty functions. The impact of the utilized materials is also examined.     A Novel Slotless Halbach-Array Permanent-Magnet Brushless DC Motor for Spacecraft Applications

    This paper presents the design and analysis of a novel machine family—the enclosed-rotor Halbach-array permanentmagnet brushless dcmotors for spacecraft applications. The initial design, selection of major parameters, and air-gap magnetic flux density are estimated using the analytical model of the machine. The proportion of the Halbach array in the machine is optimized using finite element analysis to obtain a near-trapezoidal flux pattern. The machine is found to provide uniform air-gap flux density along the radius, thus avoiding circulating currents in stator conductors and thereby reducing torque ripple.     The 10th International Conference on Energy Efficiency in Motor Driven Systems (EEMODS'17) was be held in Rome (Italy) on 6-8 September, 2017. The EEMODS conferences have been very successful in attracting distinguished and international presenters and attendees. The wide variety of stakeholders has included professionals involved in manufacturing, marketing, and promotion of energy efficient motors and motor driven systems and representatives from research labs, academia, and public policy. EEMODS’15 provided a forum to discuss and debate the latest developments in the impacts of electrical motor systems (advanced motors and drives, compressors, pumps, and fans) on energy and the environment, the policies and programmes adopted and planned, and the technical and commercial advances made in the dissemination and penetration of energy-efficient motor systems. In addition EEMODS covered also energy management in organizations, international harmonization of test method and financing of energy efficiency in motor systems.
