Hierarchical Design Based Intrusion Detection System For Wireless Ad hoc Network
In recent years, wireless ad hoc sensor network becomes popular both in civil
and military jobs. However, security is one of the significant challenges for
sensor network because of their deployment in open and unprotected environment.
As cryptographic mechanism is not enough to protect sensor network from
external attacks, intrusion detection system needs to be introduced. Though
intrusion prevention mechanism is one of the major and efficient methods
against attacks, but there might be some attacks for which prevention method is
not known. Besides preventing the system from some known attacks, intrusion
detection system gather necessary information related to attack technique and
help in the development of intrusion prevention system. In addition to
reviewing the present attacks available in wireless sensor network this paper
examines the current efforts to intrusion detection system against wireless
sensor network. In this paper we propose a hierarchical architectural design
based intrusion detection system that fits the current demands and restrictions
of wireless ad hoc sensor network. In this proposed intrusion detection system
architecture we followed clustering mechanism to build a four level
hierarchical network which enhances network scalability to large geographical
area and use both anomaly and misuse detection techniques for intrusion
detection. We introduce policy based detection mechanism as well as intrusion
response together with GSM cell concept for intrusion detection architecture.Comment: 16 pages, International Journal of Network Security & Its

DI-SEC: Distributed Security Framework for Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are deployed for monitoring in a range of critical domains (e.g., health care, military, critical infrastructure). Accordingly, these WSNs should be resilient to attacks. The current approach to defending against malicious threats is to develop and deploy a specific defense mechanism for a specific attack. However, the problem with this traditional approach to defending sensor networks is that the solution for one attack (i.e., Jamming attack) does not defend against other attacks (e.g., Sybil and Selective Forwarding). This work addresses the challenges with the traditional approach to securing sensor networks and presents a comprehensive framework, Di-Sec, that can defend against all known and forthcoming attacks. At the heart of Di-Sec lies the monitoring core (M-Core), which is an extensible and lightweight layer that gathers information and statistics relevant for creating defense modules. Along with Di-Sec, a new user-friendly domain-specific language was developed, the M-Core Control Language (MCL). Using the MCL, a user can implement new defense mechanisms without the overhead of learning the details of the underlying software architecture (i.e., TinyOS, Di-Sec). Hence, the MCL expedites the development of sensor defense mechanisms by significantly simplifying the coding process for developers. The Di-Sec framework has been implemented and tested on real sensors to evaluate its feasibility and performance. Our evaluation shows that Di-Sec is feasible on today’s resource-limited sensors and has a nominal overhead. Furthermore, we illustrate the functionality of Di-Sec by implementing four detection and defense mechanisms for attacks at various layers of the communication stack
Security and Privacy Issues in Wireless Mesh Networks: A Survey
This book chapter identifies various security threats in wireless mesh
network (WMN). Keeping in mind the critical requirement of security and user
privacy in WMNs, this chapter provides a comprehensive overview of various
possible attacks on different layers of the communication protocol stack for
WMNs and their corresponding defense mechanisms. First, it identifies the
security vulnerabilities in the physical, link, network, transport, application
layers. Furthermore, various possible attacks on the key management protocols,
user authentication and access control protocols, and user privacy preservation
protocols are presented. After enumerating various possible attacks, the
chapter provides a detailed discussion on various existing security mechanisms
and protocols to defend against and wherever possible prevent the possible
attacks. Comparative analyses are also presented on the security schemes with
regards to the cryptographic schemes used, key management strategies deployed,
use of any trusted third party, computation and communication overhead involved
etc. The chapter then presents a brief discussion on various trust management
approaches for WMNs since trust and reputation-based schemes are increasingly
becoming popular for enforcing security in wireless networks. A number of open
problems in security and privacy issues for WMNs are subsequently discussed
before the chapter is finally concluded.Comment: 62 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables. This chapter is an extension of the

Collaborative Profile Assessment to Secure MANET by DDOS Attack
In the Mobile Ad-hoc Network, nodes bind together in the centralised authority's absence because reliability is one of the main challenges. The MANETS protective architecture provides some consequential problems due to the specific features of MANETS. The DDoS attack in the network is not quickly detectable. A management infrastructure that guarantees extensive security and the required network performance from attacks must be developed to overcome the barriers. Direct methods cannot be found successfully in mobile ad hoc networks in which network topology differs animatedly. Different DDoS security systems boost the network's output in front of an attacker to deactivate mismanagement, like NTRS. In this study, the Distributed Profile Evaluation Mechanism (DPEAP) DDoS Attack Effect in the Network proposes that compromise packets tossed out of the network beyond the network's capacity. The NTRS was a modern methodology in the study, and the DPEAP suggested is a new technique. The DPEAP identifies the attacker's behaviour by matching an attacker's profile with the ordinary nodes on the network, provided that the Node Profile is regular in the foaming of the proper network data delivery. The DPEAP then declare that the attacker's network has no hazard. In contrast with NTRS in MANET, the DPEAP method is stable and efficient
TRUST-BASED DEFENSE AGAINST INSIDER PACKET DROP ATTACKS IN WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS
In most wireless sensor networks (WSNs), sensor nodes generate data packets and send them to the base station (BS) by multi-hop routing paths because of their limited energy and transmission range. The insider packet drop attacks refer to a set of attacks where compromised nodes intentionally drop packets. It is challenging to accurately detect such attacks because packets may also be dropped due to collision, congestion, or other network problems.
Trust mechanism is a promising approach to identify inside packet drop attackers. In such an approach, each node will monitor its neighbor's packet forwarding behavior and use this observation to measure the trustworthiness of its neighbors. Once a neighbor's trust value falls below a threshold, it will be considered as an attacker by the monitoring node and excluded from the routing paths so further damage to the network will not be made.
In this dissertation, we analyze the limitation of the state-of-the-art trust mechanisms and propose several enhancement techniques to better defend against insider packet drop attacks in WSNs.
First, we observe that inside attackers can easily defeat the current trust mechanisms and even if they are caught, normally a lot of damage has already been made to the network. We believe this is caused by current trust models' inefficiency in distinguishing attacking behaviors and normal network transmission failures. We demonstrate that the phenomenon of consecutive packet drops is one fundamental difference between attackers and good sensor nodes and build a hybrid trust model based on it to improve the detection speed and accuracy of current trust models.
Second, trust mechanisms give false alarms when they mis-categorize good nodes as attackers. Aggressive mechanisms like our hybrid approach designed to catch attackers as early as possible normally have high false alarm rate. Removing these nodes from routing paths may significantly reduce the performance of the network. We propose a novel false alarm detection and recovery mechanism that can recover the falsely detected good nodes.
Next, we show that more intelligent packet drop attackers can launch advanced attacks without being detected by introducing a selective forwarding-based denial-of-service attack that drops only packets from specific victim nodes. We develop effective detection and prevention methods against such attack.
We have implemented all the methods we have proposed and conducted extensive simulations with the OPNET network simulator to validate their effectiveness
A Study on Intrusion Detection System in Wireless Sensor Networks
The technology of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) has become most significant in present day. WSNs are extensively used in applications like military, industry, health, smart homes and smart cities. All the applications of WSN require secure communication between the sensor nodes and the base station. Adversary compromises at the sensor nodes to introduce different attacks into WSN. Hence, suitable Intrusion Detection System (IDS) is essential in WSN to defend against the security attack. IDS approaches for WSN are classified based on the mechanism used to detect the attacks. In this paper, we present the taxonomy of security attacks, different IDS mechanisms for detecting attacks and performance metrics used to assess the IDS algorithm for WSNs. Future research directions on IDS in WSN are also discussed
Cognitive Security Framework For Heterogeneous Sensor Network Using Swarm Intelligence
Rapid development of sensor technology has led to applications ranging from academic to military in a short time span. These tiny sensors are deployed in environments where security for data or hardware cannot be guaranteed. Due to resource constraints, traditional security schemes cannot be directly applied. Unfortunately, due to minimal or no communication security schemes, the data, link and the sensor node can be easily tampered by intruder attacks. This dissertation presents a security framework applied to a sensor network that can be managed by a cohesive sensor manager. A simple framework that can support security based on situation assessment is best suited for chaotic and harsh environments. The objective of this research is designing an evolutionary algorithm with controllable parameters to solve existing and new security threats in a heterogeneous communication network. An in-depth analysis of the different threats and the security measures applied considering the resource constrained network is explored. Any framework works best, if the correlated or orthogonal performance parameters are carefully considered based on system goals and functions. Hence, a trade-off between the different performance parameters based on weights from partially ordered sets is applied to satisfy application specific requirements and security measures. The proposed novel framework controls heterogeneous sensor network requirements, and balance the resources optimally and efficiently while communicating securely using a multi-objection function. In addition, the framework can measure the affect of single or combined denial of service attacks and also predict new attacks under both cooperative and non-cooperative sensor nodes. The cognitive intuition of the framework is evaluated under different simulated real time scenarios such as Health-care monitoring, Emergency Responder, VANET, Biometric security access system, and Battlefield monitoring. The proposed three-tiered Cognitive Security Framework is capable of performing situation assessment and performs the appropriate security measures to maintain reliability and security of the system. The first tier of the proposed framework, a crosslayer cognitive security protocol defends the communication link between nodes during denial-of-Service attacks by re-routing data through secure nodes. The cognitive nature of the protocol balances resources and security making optimal decisions to obtain reachable and reliable solutions. The versatility and robustness of the protocol is justified by the results obtained in simulating health-care and emergency responder applications under Sybil and Wormhole attacks. The protocol considers metrics from each layer of the network model to obtain an optimal and feasible resource efficient solution. In the second tier, the emergent behavior of the protocol is further extended to mine information from the nodes to defend the network against denial-of-service attack using Bayesian models. The jammer attack is considered the most vulnerable attack, and therefore simulated vehicular ad-hoc network is experimented with varied types of jammer. Classification of the jammer under various attack scenarios is formulated to predict the genuineness of the attacks on the sensor nodes using receiver operating characteristics. In addition to detecting the jammer attack, a simple technique of locating the jammer under cooperative nodes is implemented. This feature enables the network in isolating the jammer or the reputation of node is affected, thus removing the malicious node from participating in future routes. Finally, a intrusion detection system using `bait\u27 architecture is analyzed where resources is traded-off for the sake of security due to sensitivity of the application. The architecture strategically enables ant agents to detect and track the intruders threateningthe network. The proposed framework is evaluated based on accuracy and speed of intrusion detection before the network is compromised. This process of detecting the intrusion earlier helps learn future attacks, but also serves as a defense countermeasure. The simulated scenarios of this dissertation show that Cognitive Security Framework isbest suited for both homogeneous and heterogeneous sensor networks
Markov Decision Processes with Applications in Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) consist of autonomous and resource-limited
devices. The devices cooperate to monitor one or more physical phenomena within
an area of interest. WSNs operate as stochastic systems because of randomness
in the monitored environments. For long service time and low maintenance cost,
WSNs require adaptive and robust methods to address data exchange, topology
formulation, resource and power optimization, sensing coverage and object
detection, and security challenges. In these problems, sensor nodes are to make
optimized decisions from a set of accessible strategies to achieve design
goals. This survey reviews numerous applications of the Markov decision process
(MDP) framework, a powerful decision-making tool to develop adaptive algorithms
and protocols for WSNs. Furthermore, various solution methods are discussed and
compared to serve as a guide for using MDPs in WSNs
