Energy-Efficient Flow Scheduling and Routing with Hard Deadlines in Data Center Networks
The power consumption of enormous network devices in data centers has emerged
as a big concern to data center operators. Despite many
traffic-engineering-based solutions, very little attention has been paid on
performance-guaranteed energy saving schemes. In this paper, we propose a novel
energy-saving model for data center networks by scheduling and routing
"deadline-constrained flows" where the transmission of every flow has to be
accomplished before a rigorous deadline, being the most critical requirement in
production data center networks. Based on speed scaling and power-down energy
saving strategies for network devices, we aim to explore the most energy
efficient way of scheduling and routing flows on the network, as well as
determining the transmission speed for every flow. We consider two general
versions of the problem. For the version of only flow scheduling where routes
of flows are pre-given, we show that it can be solved polynomially and we
develop an optimal combinatorial algorithm for it. For the version of joint
flow scheduling and routing, we prove that it is strongly NP-hard and cannot
have a Fully Polynomial-Time Approximation Scheme (FPTAS) unless P=NP. Based on
a relaxation and randomized rounding technique, we provide an efficient
approximation algorithm which can guarantee a provable performance ratio with
respect to a polynomial of the total number of flows.Comment: 11 pages, accepted by ICDCS'1
Time Segmentation Approach Allowing QoS and Energy Saving for Wireless Sensor Networks
Wireless sensor networks are conceived to monitor a certain application or
physical phenomena and are supposed to function for several years without any
human intervention for maintenance. Thus, the main issue in sensor networks is
often to extend the lifetime of the network by reducing energy consumption. On
the other hand, some applications have high priority traffic that needs to be
transferred within a bounded end-to-end delay while maintaining an energy
efficient behavior. We propose MaCARI, a time segmentation protocol that saves
energy, improves the overall performance of the network and enables quality of
service in terms of guaranteed access to the medium and end-to-end delays. This
time segmentation is achieved by synchronizing the activity of nodes using a
tree-based beacon propagation and allocating activity periods for each cluster
of nodes. The tree-based topology is inspired from the cluster-tree proposed by
the ZigBee standard. The efficiency of our protocol is proven analytically, by
simulation and through real testbed measurements

The operation of a demand responsive transport service usually involves the management of dynamic requests. The underlying algorithms are mainly adaptations of procedures carefully designed to solve static versions of the problem, in which all the requests are known in advance. However there is no guarantee that the effectiveness of an algorithm stays unchanged when it is manipulated to work in a dynamic environment. On the other hand, the way the input is revealed to the algorithm has a decisive role on the schedule quality. A Study of Truck Platooning Incentives Using a Congestion Game
We introduce an atomic congestion game with two types of agents, cars and
trucks, to model the traffic flow on a road over various time intervals of the
day. Cars maximize their utility by finding a trade-off between the time they
choose to use the road, the average velocity of the flow at that time, and the
dynamic congestion tax that they pay for using the road. In addition to these
terms, the trucks have an incentive for using the road at the same time as
their peers because they have platooning capabilities, which allow them to save
fuel. The dynamics and equilibria of this game-theoretic model for the
interaction between car traffic and truck platooning incentives are
investigated. We use traffic data from Stockholm to validate parts of the
modeling assumptions and extract reasonable parameters for the simulations. We
use joint strategy fictitious play and average strategy fictitious play to
learn a pure strategy Nash equilibrium of this game. We perform a comprehensive
simulation study to understand the influence of various factors, such as the
drivers' value of time and the percentage of the trucks that are equipped with

Energy management in communication networks: a journey through modelling and optimization glasses
The widespread proliferation of Internet and wireless applications has
produced a significant increase of ICT energy footprint. As a response, in the
last five years, significant efforts have been undertaken to include
energy-awareness into network management. Several green networking frameworks
have been proposed by carefully managing the network routing and the power
state of network devices.
Even though approaches proposed differ based on network technologies and
sleep modes of nodes and interfaces, they all aim at tailoring the active
network resources to the varying traffic needs in order to minimize energy
consumption. From a modeling point of view, this has several commonalities with
classical network design and routing problems, even if with different
objectives and in a dynamic context.
With most researchers focused on addressing the complex and crucial
technological aspects of green networking schemes, there has been so far little
attention on understanding the modeling similarities and differences of
proposed solutions. This paper fills the gap surveying the literature with
optimization modeling glasses, following a tutorial approach that guides
through the different components of the models with a unified symbolism. A
detailed classification of the previous work based on the modeling issues
included is also proposed
Transit Node Routing Reconsidered
Transit Node Routing (TNR) is a fast and exact distance oracle for road
networks. We show several new results for TNR. First, we give a surprisingly
simple implementation fully based on Contraction Hierarchies that speeds up
preprocessing by an order of magnitude approaching the time for just finding a
CH (which alone has two orders of magnitude larger query time). We also develop
a very effective purely graph theoretical locality filter without any
compromise in query times. Finally, we show that a specialization to the online
many-to-one (or one-to-many) shortest path further speeds up query time by an
order of magnitude. This variant even has better query time than the fastest
