Efficient Semidefinite Spectral Clustering via Lagrange Duality
We propose an efficient approach to semidefinite spectral clustering (SSC),
which addresses the Frobenius normalization with the positive semidefinite
(p.s.d.) constraint for spectral clustering. Compared with the original
Frobenius norm approximation based algorithm, the proposed algorithm can more
accurately find the closest doubly stochastic approximation to the affinity
matrix by considering the p.s.d. constraint. In this paper, SSC is formulated
as a semidefinite programming (SDP) problem. In order to solve the high
computational complexity of SDP, we present a dual algorithm based on the
Lagrange dual formalization. Two versions of the proposed algorithm are
proffered: one with less memory usage and the other with faster convergence
rate. The proposed algorithm has much lower time complexity than that of the
standard interior-point based SDP solvers. Experimental results on both UCI
data sets and real-world image data sets demonstrate that 1) compared with the
state-of-the-art spectral clustering methods, the proposed algorithm achieves
better clustering performance; and 2) our algorithm is much more efficient and
can solve larger-scale SSC problems than those standard interior-point SDP
solvers.Comment: 13 page
Dimensionality Reduction in Deep Learning for Chest X-Ray Analysis of Lung Cancer
Efficiency of some dimensionality reduction techniques, like lung
segmentation, bone shadow exclusion, and t-distributed stochastic neighbor
embedding (t-SNE) for exclusion of outliers, is estimated for analysis of chest
X-ray (CXR) 2D images by deep learning approach to help radiologists identify
marks of lung cancer in CXR. Training and validation of the simple
convolutional neural network (CNN) was performed on the open JSRT dataset
(dataset #01), the JSRT after bone shadow exclusion - BSE-JSRT (dataset #02),
JSRT after lung segmentation (dataset #03), BSE-JSRT after lung segmentation
(dataset #04), and segmented BSE-JSRT after exclusion of outliers by t-SNE
method (dataset #05). The results demonstrate that the pre-processed dataset
obtained after lung segmentation, bone shadow exclusion, and filtering out the
outliers by t-SNE (dataset #05) demonstrates the highest training rate and best
accuracy in comparison to the other pre-processed datasets.Comment: 6 pages, 14 figure
Cancer diagnosis using deep learning: A bibliographic review
In this paper, we first describe the basics of the field of cancer diagnosis, which includes steps of cancer diagnosis followed by the typical classification methods used by doctors, providing a historical idea of cancer classification techniques to the readers. These methods include Asymmetry, Border, Color and Diameter (ABCD) method, seven-point detection method, Menzies method, and pattern analysis. They are used regularly by doctors for cancer diagnosis, although they are not considered very efficient for obtaining better performance. Moreover, considering all types of audience, the basic evaluation criteria are also discussed. The criteria include the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC curve), Area under the ROC curve (AUC), F1 score, accuracy, specificity, sensitivity, precision, dice-coefficient, average accuracy, and Jaccard index. Previously used methods are considered inefficient, asking for better and smarter methods for cancer diagnosis. Artificial intelligence and cancer diagnosis are gaining attention as a way to define better diagnostic tools. In particular, deep neural networks can be successfully used for intelligent image analysis. The basic framework of how this machine learning works on medical imaging is provided in this study, i.e., pre-processing, image segmentation and post-processing. The second part of this manuscript describes the different deep learning techniques, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), generative adversarial models (GANs), deep autoencoders (DANs), restricted Boltzmann’s machine (RBM), stacked autoencoders (SAE), convolutional autoencoders (CAE), recurrent neural networks (RNNs), long short-term memory (LTSM), multi-scale convolutional neural network (M-CNN), multi-instance learning convolutional neural network (MIL-CNN). For each technique, we provide Python codes, to allow interested readers to experiment with the cited algorithms on their own diagnostic problems. The third part of this manuscript compiles the successfully applied deep learning models for different types of cancers. Considering the length of the manuscript, we restrict ourselves to the discussion of breast cancer, lung cancer, brain cancer, and skin cancer. The purpose of this bibliographic review is to provide researchers opting to work in implementing deep learning and artificial neural networks for cancer diagnosis a knowledge from scratch of the state-of-the-art achievements
Automatic Pulmonary Nodule Detection in CT Scans Using Convolutional Neural Networks Based on Maximum Intensity Projection
Accurate pulmonary nodule detection is a crucial step in lung cancer
screening. Computer-aided detection (CAD) systems are not routinely used by
radiologists for pulmonary nodule detection in clinical practice despite their
potential benefits. Maximum intensity projection (MIP) images improve the
detection of pulmonary nodules in radiological evaluation with computed
tomography (CT) scans. Inspired by the clinical methodology of radiologists, we
aim to explore the feasibility of applying MIP images to improve the
effectiveness of automatic lung nodule detection using convolutional neural
networks (CNNs). We propose a CNN-based approach that takes MIP images of
different slab thicknesses (5 mm, 10 mm, 15 mm) and 1 mm axial section slices
as input. Such an approach augments the two-dimensional (2-D) CT slice images
with more representative spatial information that helps discriminate nodules
from vessels through their morphologies. Our proposed method achieves
sensitivity of 92.67% with 1 false positive per scan and sensitivity of 94.19%
with 2 false positives per scan for lung nodule detection on 888 scans in the
LIDC-IDRI dataset. The use of thick MIP images helps the detection of small
pulmonary nodules (3 mm-10 mm) and results in fewer false positives.
Experimental results show that utilizing MIP images can increase the
sensitivity and lower the number of false positives, which demonstrates the
effectiveness and significance of the proposed MIP-based CNNs framework for
automatic pulmonary nodule detection in CT scans. The proposed method also
shows the potential that CNNs could gain benefits for nodule detection by
combining the clinical procedure.Comment: Submitted to IEEE TM
A Novel Deep Learning Framework for Internal Gross Target Volume Definition from 4D Computed Tomography of Lung Cancer Patients
In this paper, we study the reliability of a novel deep learning framework for internal gross target volume (IGTV) delineation from four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT), which is applied to patients with lung cancer treated by Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT). 77 patients who underwent SBRT followed by 4DCT scans were incorporated in a retrospective study. The IGTV_DL was delineated using a novel deep machine learning algorithm with a linear exhaustive optimal combination framework, for the purpose of comparison, three other IGTVs base on common methods was also delineated, we compared the relative volume difference (RVI), matching index (MI) and encompassment index (EI) for the above IGTVs. Then, multiple parameter regression analysis assesses the tumor volume and motion range as clinical influencing factors in the MI variation. Experimental results demonstrated that the deep learning algorithm with linear exhaustive optimal combination framework has a higher probability of achieving optimal MI compared with other currently widely used methods. For patients after simple breathing training by keeping the respiratory frequency in 10 BMP, the four phase combinations of 0%, 30%, 50% and 90% can be considered as a potential candidate for an optimal combination to synthesis IGTV in all respiration amplitudes
