A Bramble-Pasciak-like method with applications in optimization

Saddle-point systems arise in many applications areas, in fact in any situation where an extremum principle arises with constraints. The Stokes problem describing slow viscous flow of an incompressible fluid is a classic example coming from partial differential equations and in the area of Optimization such problems are ubiquitous.\ud In this manuscript we show how new approaches for the solution of saddle-point systems arising in Optimization can be derived from the Bramble-Pasciak Conjugate Gradient approach widely used in PDEs and more recent generalizations thereof. In particular we derive a class of new solution methods based on the use of Preconditioned Conjugate Gradients in non-standard inner products and demonstrate how these can be understood through more standard machinery. We show connections to Constraint Preconditioning and give the results of numerical computations on a number of standard Optimization test examples

Feedback Synthesis for Controllable Underactuated Systems using Sequential Second Order Actions

This paper derives nonlinear feedback control synthesis for general control affine systems using second-order actions---the needle variations of optimal control---as the basis for choosing each control response to the current state. A second result of the paper is that the method provably exploits the nonlinear controllability of a system by virtue of an explicit dependence of the second-order needle variation on the Lie bracket between vector fields. As a result, each control decision necessarily decreases the objective when the system is nonlinearly controllable using first-order Lie brackets. Simulation results using a differential drive cart, an underactuated kinematic vehicle in three dimensions, and an underactuated dynamic model of an underwater vehicle demonstrate that the method finds control solutions when the first-order analysis is singular. Moreover, the simulated examples demonstrate superior convergence when compared to synthesis based on first-order needle variations. Lastly, the underactuated dynamic underwater vehicle model demonstrates the convergence even in the presence of a velocity field.Comment: 9 page

Analysis of Crout, Lu, Cholesky Decomposition, and QR Factorization: A Case Study On The Relationship Between Abiotic (Carbon and Nitrogen) and Biotic (Macrobenthos Diversity) Factors

Many real world problems can be represented by a system of linear equations, such as in the field of ecology, i.e, the relationship of carbon and nitrogen with macrobenthos diversity. There are many methods to solve linear equations system, then it is necessary to do an analysis of which method is the best so that the user can choose the most efficient method. The methods that will be analyzed are LU, Crout, Cholesky decomposition, and QR factorization. From the calculation of arithmetic operations obtained Cholesky decomposition method is the most efficient method because it has the fewest arithmetic operations. Further, to verify the proposed method we demonstrated simulation with a case study of the relationship between carbon and nitrogen with the macrobenthos diversity based on data from the area of polyculture system and PT. Kayu Lapis Indonesia coastal, Mororejo village subdistrict Kaliwungu district Kendal. From the simulation resultsis obtained that computing time the smallest is the Cholesky decomposition is equal to 1.4664 seconds, which means that the Cholesky decomposition is the most efficient method than the method of LU, Crout decomposition and QR factorization
