    Discrete-time queueing model for responsive network traffic and bottleneck queues

    The Internet has been more and more intensively used in recent years. Although network infrastructure has been regularly upgraded, and the ability to manage heavy traffic greatly increased, especially on the core networks, congestion never ceases to appear, as the amount of traffic that flow on the Internet seems to be increasing at an even faster rate. Thus, congestion control mechanisms play a vital role in the functioning of the Internet. Active Queue Management (AQM) is a popular type of congestion control mechanism that is implemented on gateways (most notably routers), which can predict and avoid the congestion before it happens. When properly configured, AQMs can effectively reduce the congestion, and alleviate some of the problems such as global synchronisation and unfairness to bursty traffic. However, there are still many problems regarding AQMs. Most of the AQM schemes are quite sensitive to their parameters setting, and these parameters may be heavily dependent on the network traffic profile, which the administrator may not have intensive knowledge of, and is likely to change over time. When poorly configured, many AQMs perform no better than the basic drop-tail queue. There is currently no effective method to compare the performance of these AQM algorithms, caused by the parameter configuration problem. In this research, the aim is to propose a new analytical model, which mainly uses discrete-time queueing theory. A novel transient modification to the conventional equilibrium-based method is proposed, and it is utilised to further develop a dynamic interactive model of responsive traffic and bottleneck queues. Using step-by-step analysis, it represents the bursty traffic and oscillating queue length behaviour in practical network more accurately. It also provides an effective way of predicting the behaviour of a TCP-AQM system, allowing easier parameter optimisation for AQM schemes. Numerical solution using MATLAB and software simulation using NS-2 are used to extensively validate the proposed models, theories and conclusions

    Performance Evaluation of Transition-based Systems with Applications to Communication Networks

    Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, communication systems have witnessed a revolution in terms of their hardware capabilities. This transformation has enabled modern networks to stand up to the diversity and the scale of the requirements of the applications that they support. Compared to their predecessors that primarily consisted of a handful of homogeneous devices communicating via a single communication technology, today's networks connect myriads of systems that are intrinsically different in their functioning and purpose. In addition, many of these devices communicate via different technologies or a combination of them at a time. All these developments, coupled with the geographical disparity of the physical infrastructure, give rise to network environments that are inherently dynamic and unpredictable. To cope with heterogeneous environments and the growing demands, network units have taken a leap from the paradigm of static functioning to that of adaptivity. In this thesis, we refer to adaptive network units as transition-based systems (TBSs) and the act of adapting is termed as transition. We note that TBSs not only reside in diverse environment conditions, their need to adapt also arises following different phenomena. Such phenomena are referred to as triggers and they can occur at different time scales. We additionally observe that the nature of a transition is dictated by the specified performance objective of the relevant TBS and we seek to build an analytical framework that helps us derive a policy for performance optimization. As the state of the art lacks a unified approach to modelling the diverse functioning of the TBSs and their varied performance objectives, we first propose a general framework based on the theory of Markov Decision Processes. This framework facilitates optimal policy derivation in TBSs in a principled manner. In addition, we note the importance of bespoke analyses in specific classes of TBSs where the general formulation leads to a high-dimensional optimization problem. Specifically, we consider performance optimization in open systems employing parallelism and closed systems exploiting the benefits of service batching. In these examples, we resort to approximation techniques such as a mean-field limit for the state evolution whenever the underlying TBS deals with a large number of entities. Our formulation enables calculation of optimal policies and provides tangible alternatives to existing frameworks for Quality of Service evaluation. Compared to the state of the art, the derived policies facilitate transitions in Communication Systems that yield superior performance as shown through extensive evaluations in this thesis

    A versatile model for TCP bandwidth sharing in networks with heterogeneous users.

    Enabled by the emergence of various access technologies (such as ADSL and wireless LAN), the number of users with high-speed access to the Internet is growing rapidly, and their expectation with respect to the quality-of-service of the applications has been increasing accordingly. With TCP being the ubiquitous underlying end-to-end control, this motivates the interest in easy-to-evaluate, yet accurate, performance models for a TCP-based network shared by multiple classes of users. Building on the vast body of existing models, we develop a novel versatile model that explicitly captures user heterogeneity, and takes into consideration dynamics at both the packet level and the flow level. It is described how the resulting multiple time-scale model can be numerically evaluated. Validation is done by using NS2 simulations as a benchmark. In extensive numerical experiments, we study the impact of heterogeneity in the round-trip times on user-level characteristics such as throughputs and flow transmission times, thus quantifying the resulting bias. We also investigate to what extent this bias is affected by the networks' `packet-level parameters', such as buffer sizes. We conclude by extending the single-link model in a straightforward way to a general network setting.     DYNAMICS OF RANDOM EARLY DETECTION GATEWAY UNDER A LARGE NUMBER OF TCP FLOWS

    While active queue management (AQM) mechanisms such as Random Early Detection (RED) are widely deployed in the Internet, they are rarely utilized or otherwise poorly configured. The problem stems from a lack of a tractable analytical framework which captures the interaction between the TCP congestion-control and AQM mechanisms. Traditional TCP traffic modeling has focused on "micro-scale" modeling of TCP, i.e., detailed modeling of a single TCP flow. While micro-scale models of TCP are suitable for understanding the precise behavior of an individual flow, they are not well suited to the situation where a large number of TCP flows interact with each other as is the case in realistic networks. In this dissertation, an innovative approach to TCP traffic modeling is proposed by considering the regime where the number of TCP flows competing for the bandwidth in the bottleneck RED gateway is large. In the limit, the queue size and the aggregate TCP traffic can be approximated by simple recursions which are independent of the number of flows. The limiting model is therefore scalable as it does not suffer from the state space explosion. The steady-state queue length and window distribution can be evaluated from well-known TCP models. We also extend the analysis to a more realistic model which incorporates session-level dynamics and heterogeneous round-trip delays. Typically, ad-hoc assumptions are required to make the analysis for models with session-level dynamics tractable under a certain regime. In contrast, our limiting model derived here is compatible with other previously proposed models in their respective regime without having to rely on ad-hoc assumptions. The contributions from these additional layers of dynamics to the asymptotic queue are now crisply revealed through the limit theorems. Under mild assumptions, we show that the steady-state queue size depends on the file size and round-trip delay only through their mean values. We obtain more accurate description of the queue dynamics by means of a Central Limit analysis which identifies an interesting relationship between the queue fluctuations and the random packet marking mechanism in AQM. The analysis also reveals the dependency of the magnitude of the queue fluctuations on the variability of the file size and round-trip delay. Simulation results supporting conclusions drawn from the limit theorems are also presented

    TCP performance enhancement in wireless networks via adaptive congestion control and active queue management

    The transmission control protocol (TCP) exhibits poor performance when used in error-prone wireless networks. Remedy to this problem has been an active research area. However, a widely accepted and adopted solution is yet to emerge. Difficulties of an acceptable solution lie in the areas of compatibility, scalability, computational complexity and the involvement of intermediate routers and switches. This dissertation rexriews the current start-of-the-art solutions to TCP performance enhancement, and pursues an end-to-end solution framework to the problem. The most noticeable cause of the performance degradation of TCP in wireless networks is the higher packet loss rate as compared to that in traditional wired networks. Packet loss type differentiation has been the focus of many proposed TCP performance enhancement schemes. Studies conduced by this dissertation research suggest that besides the standard TCP\u27s inability of discriminating congestion packet losses from losses related to wireless link errors, the standard TCP\u27s additive increase and multiplicative decrease (AIMD) congestion control algorithm itself needs to be redesigned to achieve better performance in wireless, and particularly, high-speed wireless networks. This dissertation proposes a simple, efficient, and effective end-to-end solution framework that enhances TCP\u27s performance through techniques of adaptive congestion control and active queue management. By end-to-end, it means a solution with no requirement of routers being wireless-aware or wireless-specific . TCP-Jersey has been introduced as an implementation of the proposed solution framework, and its performance metrics have been evaluated through extensive simulations. TCP-Jersey consists of an adaptive congestion control algorithm at the source by means of the source\u27s achievable rate estimation (ARE) —an adaptive filter of packet inter-arrival times, a congestion indication algorithm at the links (i.e., AQM) by means of packet marking, and a effective loss differentiation algorithm at the source by careful examination of the congestion marks carried by the duplicate acknowledgment packets (DUPACK). Several improvements to the proposed TCP-Jersey have been investigated, including a more robust ARE algorithm, a less computationally intensive threshold marking algorithm as the AQM link algorithm, a more stable congestion indication function based on virtual capacity at the link, and performance results have been presented and analyzed via extensive simulations of various network configurations. Stability analysis of the proposed ARE-based additive increase and adaptive decrease (AJAD) congestion control algorithm has been conducted and the analytical results have been verified by simulations. Performance of TCP-Jersey has been compared to that of a perfect , but not practical, TCP scheme, and encouraging results have been observed. Finally the framework of the TCP-Jersey\u27s source algorithm has been extended and generalized for rate-based congestion control, as opposed to TCP\u27s window-based congestion control, to provide a design platform for applications, such as real-time multimedia, that do not use TCP as transport protocol yet do need to control network congestion as well as combat packet losses in wireless networks. In conclusion, the framework architecture presented in this dissertation that combines the adaptive congestion control and active queue management in solving the TCP performance degradation problem in wireless networks has been shown as a promising answer to the problem due to its simplistic design philosophy complete compatibility with the current TCP/IP and AQM practice, end-to-end architecture for scalability, and the high effectiveness and low computational overhead. The proposed implementation of the solution framework, namely TCP-Jersey is a modification of the standard TCP protocol rather than a completely new design of the transport protocol. It is an end-to-end approach to address the performance degradation problem since it does not require split mode connection establishment and maintenance using special wireless-aware software agents at the routers. The proposed solution also differs from other solutions that rely on the link layer error notifications for packet loss differentiation. The proposed solution is also unique among other proposed end-to-end solutions in that it differentiates packet losses attributed to wireless link errors from congestion induced packet losses directly from the explicit congestion indication marks in the DUPACK packets, rather than inferring the loss type based on packet delay or delay jitter as in many other proposed solutions; nor by undergoing a computationally expensive off-line training of a classification model (e.g., HMM), or a Bayesian estimation/detection process that requires estimations of a priori loss probability distributions of different loss types. The proposed solution is also scalable and fully compatible to the current practice in Internet congestion control and queue management, but with an additional function of loss type differentiation that effectively enhances TCP\u27s performance over error-prone wireless networks. Limitations of the proposed solution architecture and areas for future researches are also addressed

    Quality of service and resource management in IP and wireless networks

    A common theme in the publications included in this thesis is the quality of service and resource management in IP and wireless networks. This thesis presents novel algorithms and implementations for admission control in IP and IEEE 802.16e networks, active queue management in EGPRS, WCDMA, and IEEE 802.16e networks, and scheduling in IEEE 802.16e networks. The performance of different algorithms and mechanisms is compared with the prior art through extensive ns-2 simulations. We show that similar active queue management mechanisms, such as TTLRED, can be successfully used to reduce the downlink delay (and in some cases even improve the TCP goodput) in different bottlenecks of IP, EGPRS, WCDMA, and IEEE 802.16e access networks. Moreover, almost identical connection admission control algorithms can be applied both in IP access networks and at IEEE 802.16e base stations. In the former case, one just has to first gather the link load information from the IP routers. We also note that DiffServ can be used to avoid costly overprovisioning of the backhaul in IEEE 802.16e networks. We present a simple mapping between IEEE 802.16e data delivery services and DiffServ traffic classes, and we propose that IEEE 802.16e base stations should take the backhaul traffic load into account in their admission control decisions. Moreover, different IEEE 802.16e base station scheduling algorithms and uplink channel access mechanisms are studied. In the former study, we show that proportional fair scheduling offers superior spectral efficiency when compared to deficit round-robin, though in some cases at the cost of increased delay. Additionally, we introduce a variant of deficit round-robin (WDRR), where the quantum value depends on the modulation and coding scheme. We also show that there are several ways to implement ertPS in an efficient manner, so that during the silence periods of a VoIP call no uplink slots are granted. The problem here, however, is how to implement the resumption after the silence period while introducing as little delay as possible

    Performance analysis and network path characterization for scalable internet streaming

    Delivering high-quality of video to end users over the best-effort Internet is a challenging task since quality of streaming video is highly subject to network conditions. A fundamental issue in this area is how real-time applications cope with network dynamics and adapt their operational behavior to offer a favorable streaming environment to end users. As an effort towards providing such streaming environment, the first half of this work focuses on analyzing the performance of video streaming in best-effort networks and developing a new streaming framework that effectively utilizes unequal importance of video packets in rate control and achieves a near-optimal performance for a given network packet loss rate. In addition, we study error concealment methods such as FEC (Forward-Error Correction) that is often used to protect multimedia data over lossy network channels. We investigate the impact of FEC on the quality of video and develop models that can provide insights into understanding how inclusion of FEC affects streaming performance and its optimality and resilience characteristics under dynamically changing network conditions. In the second part of this thesis, we focus on measuring bandwidth of network paths, which plays an important role in characterizing Internet paths and can benefit many applications including multimedia streaming. We conduct a stochastic analysis of an end-to-end path and develop novel bandwidth sampling techniques that can produce asymptotically accurate capacity and available bandwidth of the path under non-trivial cross-traffic conditions. In addition, we conduct comparative performance study of existing bandwidth estimation tools in non-simulated networks where various timing irregularities affect delay measurements. We find that when high-precision packet timing is not available due to hardware interrupt moderation, the majority of existing algorithms are not robust to measure end-to-end paths with high accuracy. We overcome this problem by using signal de-noising techniques in bandwidth measurement. We also develop a new measurement tool called PRC-MT based on theoretical models that simultaneously measures the capacity and available bandwidth of the tight link with asymptotic accuracy

    Layering as Optimization Decomposition: Questions and Answers

    Network protocols in layered architectures have historically been obtained on an ad-hoc basis, and much of the recent cross-layer designs are conducted through piecemeal approaches. Network protocols may instead be holistically analyzed and systematically designed as distributed solutions to some global optimization problems in the form of generalized Network Utility Maximization (NUM), providing insight on what they optimize and on the structures of network protocol stacks. In the form of 10 Questions and Answers, this paper presents a short survey of the recent efforts towards a systematic understanding of "layering" as "optimization decomposition". The overall communication network is modeled by a generalized NUM problem, each layer corresponds to a decomposed subproblem, and the interfaces among layers are quantified as functions of the optimization variables coordinating the subproblems. Furthermore, there are many alternative decompositions, each leading to a different layering architecture. Industry adoption of this unifying framework has also started. Here we summarize the current status of horizontal decomposition into distributed computation and vertical decomposition into functional modules such as congestion control, routing, scheduling, random access, power control, and coding. We also discuss under-explored future research directions in this area. More importantly than proposing any particular crosslayer design, this framework is working towards a mathematical foundation of network architectures and the design process of modularization

    Stable and scalable congestion control for high-speed heterogeneous networks

    For any congestion control mechanisms, the most fundamental design objectives are stability and scalability. However, achieving both properties are very challenging in such a heterogeneous environment as the Internet. From the end-users' perspective, heterogeneity is due to the fact that different flows have different routing paths and therefore different communication delays, which can significantly affect stability of the entire system. In this work, we successfully address this problem by first proving a sufficient and necessary condition for a system to be stable under arbitrary delay. Utilizing this result, we design a series of practical congestion control protocols (MKC and JetMax) that achieve stability regardless of delay as well as many additional appealing properties. From the routers' perspective, the system is heterogeneous because the incoming traffic is a mixture of short- and long-lived, TCP and non-TCP flows. This imposes a severe challenge on traditional buffer sizing mechanisms, which are derived using the simplistic model of a single or multiple synchronized long-lived TCP flows. To overcome this problem, we take a control-theoretic approach and design a new intelligent buffer sizing scheme called Adaptive Buffer Sizing (ABS), which based on the current incoming traffic, dynamically sets the optimal buffer size under the target performance constraints. Our extensive simulation results demonstrate that ABS exhibits quick responses to changes of traffic load, scalability to a large number of incoming flows, and robustness to generic Internet traffic
