    Mapping and monitoring forest remnants : a multiscale analysis of spatio-temporal data

Besides, forests also influence soil and water dynamics with major consequences for ecological relations and decision-making. One basic requirement to quantify and model these processes is the availability of accurate maps of forest cover. Data acquisition and analysis at appropriate scales is the keystone to achieve the mapping accuracy needed for development and reliable use of ecological models.The current and upcoming production of high-resolution data sets plus the ever-increasing time series that have been collected since the seventieth must be effectively explored. Missing values and distortions further complicate the analysis of this data set. Thus, integration and proper analysis is of utmost importance for environmental research. New conceptual models in environmental sciences, like the perception of multiple scales, require the development of effective implementation techniques.This thesis presents new methodologies to map and monitor forests on large, highly fragmented areas with complex land use patterns. The use of temporal information is extensively explored to distinguish natural forests from other land cover types that are spectrally similar. In chapter 4, novel schemes based on multiscale wavelet analysis are introduced, which enabled an effective preprocessing of long time series of Landsat data and improved its applicability on environmental assessment.In chapter 5, the produced time series as well as other information on spectral and spatial characteristics were used to classify forested areas in an experiment relating a number of combinations of attribute features. Feature sets were defined based on expert knowledge and on data mining techniques to be input to traditional and machine learning algorithms for pattern recognition, viz . maximum likelihood, univariate and multivariate decision trees, and neural networks. The results showed that maximum likelihood classification using temporal texture descriptors as extracted with wavelet transforms was most accurate to classify the semideciduous Atlantic forest in the study area.In chapter 6, a multiscale approach to digital change detection was developed to deal with multisensor and noisy remotely sensed images. Changes were extracted according to size classes minimising the effects of geometric and radiometric misregistration.Finally, in chapter 7, an automated procedure for GIS updating based on feature extraction, segmentation and classification was developed to monitor the remnants of semideciduos Atlantic forest. The procedure showed significant improvements over post classification comparison and direct multidate classification based on artificial neural networks.</p

    Spatial Analysis for Landscape Changes

    Recent increasing trends of the occurrence of natural and anthropic processes have a strong impact on landscape modification, and there is a growing need for the implementation of effective instruments, tools, and approaches to understand and manage landscape changes. A great improvement in the availability of high-resolution DEMs, GIS tools, and algorithms of automatic extraction of landform features and change detections has favored an increase in the analysis of landscape changes, which became an essential instrument for the quantitative evaluation of landscape changes in many research fields. One of the most effective ways of investigating natural landscape changes is the geomorphological one, which benefits from recent advances in the development of digital elevation model (DEM) comparison software and algorithms, image change detection, and landscape evolution models. This Special Issue collects six papers concerning the application of traditional and innovative multidisciplinary methods in several application fields, such as geomorphology, urban and territorial systems, vegetation restoration, and soil science. The papers include multidisciplinary studies that highlight the usefulness of quantitative analyses of satellite images and UAV-based DEMs, the application of Landscape Evolution Models (LEMs) and automatic landform classification algorithms to solve multidisciplinary issues of landscape changes. A review article is also presented, dealing with the bibliometric analysis of the research topic

    Change detection and landscape similarity comparison using computer vision methods

    Human-induced disturbances of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems continue at alarming rates. With the advent of both raw sensor and analysis-ready datasets, the need to monitor ecosystem disturbances is now more imperative than ever; yet the task is becoming increasingly complex with increasing sources and varieties of earth observation data. In this research, computer vision methods and tools are interrogated to understand their capability for comparing spatial patterns. A critical survey of literature provides evidence that computer vision methods are relatively robust to scale and highlights issues involved in parameterization of computer vision models for characterizing significant pattern information in a geographic context. Utilizing two widely used pattern indices to compare spatial patterns in simulated and real-world datasets revealed their potential to detect subtle changes in spatial patterns which would not otherwise be feasible using traditional pixel-level techniques. A texture-based CNN model was developed to extract spatially relevant information for landscape similarity comparison; the CNN feature maps proved to be effective in distinguishing agriculture landscapes from other landscape types (e.g., forest and mountainous landscapes). For real-world human disturbance monitoring, a U-Net CNN was developed and compared with a random forest model. Both modeling frameworks exhibit promising potential to map placer mining disturbance; however, random forests proved simple to train and deploy for placer mapping, while the U-Net may be used to augment RF as it is capable of reducing misclassification errors and will benefit from increasing availability of detailed training data

    A Multi Views Approach for Remote Sensing Fusion Based on Spectral, Spatial and Temporal Information

    The objectives of this chapter are to contribute to the apprehension of image fusion approaches including concepts definition, techniques ethics and results assessment. It is structured in five sections. Following this introduction, a definition of image fusion provides involved fundamental concepts. Respectively, we explain cases in which image fusion might be useful. Most existing techniques and architectures are reviewed and classified in the third section. In fourth section, we focuses heavily on algorithms based on multi-views approach, we compares and analyses the process model and algorithms including advantages, limitations and applicability of each view. The last part of the chapter summarized the benefits and limitations of a multi-view approach image fusion; it gives some recommendations on the effectiveness and the performance of these methods. These recommendations, based on a comprehensive study and meaningful quantitative metrics, evaluate various proposed views by applying them to various environmental applications with different remotely sensed images coming from different sensors. In the concluding section, we fence the chapter with a summary and recommendations for future researches

    Boundary-semantic collaborative guidance network with dual-stream feedback mechanism for salient object detection in optical remote sensing imagery

    With the increasing application of deep learning in various domains, salient object detection in optical remote sensing images (ORSI-SOD) has attracted significant attention. However, most existing ORSI-SOD methods predominantly rely on local information from low-level features to infer salient boundary cues and supervise them using boundary ground truth, but fail to sufficiently optimize and protect the local information, and almost all approaches ignore the potential advantages offered by the last layer of the decoder to maintain the integrity of saliency maps. To address these issues, we propose a novel method named boundary-semantic collaborative guidance network (BSCGNet) with dual-stream feedback mechanism. First, we propose a boundary protection calibration (BPC) module, which effectively reduces the loss of edge position information during forward propagation and suppresses noise in low-level features without relying on boundary ground truth. Second, based on the BPC module, a dual feature feedback complementary (DFFC) module is proposed, which aggregates boundary-semantic dual features and provides effective feedback to coordinate features across different layers, thereby enhancing cross-scale knowledge communication. Finally, to obtain more complete saliency maps, we consider the uniqueness of the last layer of the decoder for the first time and propose the adaptive feedback refinement (AFR) module, which further refines feature representation and eliminates differences between features through a unique feedback mechanism. Extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets demonstrate that BSCGNet exhibits distinct advantages in challenging scenarios and outperforms the 17 state-of-the-art (SOTA) approaches proposed in recent years.     Semantic segmentation of landcover for cropland mapping and area estimation using Machine Learning techniques

    ABSTRACTThe paper has focussed on the global landcover for the identification of cropland areas. Population growth and rapid industrialization are somehow disturbing the agricultural lands and eventually the food production needed for human survival. Appropriate agricultural land monitoring requires proper management of land resources. The paper has proposed a method for cropland mapping by semantic segmentation of landcover to identify the cropland boundaries and estimate the cropland areas using machine learning techniques. The process has initially applied various filters to identify the features responsible for detecting the land boundaries through the edge detection process. The images are masked or annotated to produce the ground truth for the label identification of croplands, rivers, buildings, and backgrounds. The selected features are transferred to a machine learning model for the semantic segmentation process. The methodology has applied Random Forest, which has compared to two other techniques, Support Vector Machine and Multilayer perceptron, for the semantic segmentation process. Our dataset is composed of satellite images collected from the QGIS application. The paper has derived the conclusion that Random forest has given the best result for segmenting the image into different regions with 99% training accuracy and 90% test accuracy. The results are cross-validated by computing the Mean IoU and kappa coefficient that shows 93% and 69% score value respectively for Random Forest, found maximum among all. The paper has also calculated the area covered under the different segmented regions. Overall, Random Forest has produced promising results for semantic segmentation of landcover for cropland mapping

    Robust Modular Feature-Based Terrain-Aided Visual Navigation and Mapping

    The visual feature-based Terrain-Aided Navigation (TAN) system presented in this thesis addresses the problem of constraining inertial drift introduced into the location estimate of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in GPS-denied environment. The presented TAN system utilises salient visual features representing semantic or human-interpretable objects (roads, forest and water boundaries) from onboard aerial imagery and associates them to a database of reference features created a-priori, through application of the same feature detection algorithms to satellite imagery. Correlation of the detected features with the reference features via a series of the robust data association steps allows a localisation solution to be achieved with a finite absolute bound precision defined by the certainty of the reference dataset. The feature-based Visual Navigation System (VNS) presented in this thesis was originally developed for a navigation application using simulated multi-year satellite image datasets. The extension of the system application into the mapping domain, in turn, has been based on the real (not simulated) flight data and imagery. In the mapping study the full potential of the system, being a versatile tool for enhancing the accuracy of the information derived from the aerial imagery has been demonstrated. Not only have the visual features, such as road networks, shorelines and water bodies, been used to obtain a position ’fix’, they have also been used in reverse for accurate mapping of vehicles detected on the roads into an inertial space with improved precision. Combined correction of the geo-coding errors and improved aircraft localisation formed a robust solution to the defense mapping application. A system of the proposed design will provide a complete independent navigation solution to an autonomous UAV and additionally give it object tracking capability

    Permuted Spectral and Permuted Spectral-Spatial CNN Models for PolSAR- Multispectral Data based Land Cover Classification

    International audienceIt is a challenge to develop methods which can process the PolSAR and multispectral (MS) data modalities together without losing information from either for remote sensing applications. This paper presents a study which attempts to introduce novel deep learning based remote sensing data processing frameworks that utilizes convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in both spatial and spectral domains to perform land cover (LC) classification with PolSAR-MS data. Also since earth observation remotely sensed data have usually larger spectral depth than normal camera image data, exploiting the spectral information in remote sensing (RS) data is crucial as well. In fact, convolutions in the sub-spectral space are intuitive and alternative to the process of feature selection. Recently, researchers have gained success in exploiting the spectral information of RS data, especially the hyperspectral data with CNNs. In this paper, exploitation of the spectral information in the PolSAR-MS data via a permuted localized spectral convolution along with localized spatial convolution is proposed. Further, the study in this paper also establishes the significance of performing permuted localized spectral convolutions over non-localized or localized spectral convolutions. Two models are proposed, namely a permuted local spectral convolutional network (Perm-LS-CNN) and a permuted local spectral-spatial convolutional network (Perm-LSS-CNN). These models are trained on ground truth class data points measured directly on the terrain. The evaluation of the generalization performance is done using ground truth knowledge on selected well known regions in the study areas. Comparison with other popular machine learning classifiers shows that the Perm-LSS-CNN model provides better classification results in terms of both accuracy and generalization
