Multi crteria decision making and its applications : a literature review
This paper presents current techniques used in Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) and their applications. Two basic approaches for MCDM, namely Artificial Intelligence MCDM (AIMCDM) and Classical MCDM (CMCDM) are discussed and investigated. Recent articles from international journals related to MCDM are collected and analyzed to find which approach is more common than the other in MCDM. Also, which area these techniques are applied to. Those articles are appearing in journals for the year 2008 only. This paper provides evidence that currently, both AIMCDM and CMCDM are equally common in MCDM
Optimization of fuzzy analogy in software cost estimation using linguistic variables
One of the most important objectives of software engineering community has
been the increase of useful models that beneficially explain the development of
life cycle and precisely calculate the effort of software cost estimation. In
analogy concept, there is deficiency in handling the datasets containing
categorical variables though there are innumerable methods to estimate the
cost. Due to the nature of software engineering domain, generally project
attributes are often measured in terms of linguistic values such as very low,
low, high and very high. The imprecise nature of such value represents the
uncertainty and vagueness in their elucidation. However, there is no efficient
method that can directly deal with the categorical variables and tolerate such
imprecision and uncertainty without taking the classical intervals and numeric
value approaches. In this paper, a new approach for optimization based on fuzzy
logic, linguistic quantifiers and analogy based reasoning is proposed to
improve the performance of the effort in software project when they are
described in either numerical or categorical data. The performance of this
proposed method exemplifies a pragmatic validation based on the historical NASA
dataset. The results were analyzed using the prediction criterion and indicates
that the proposed method can produce more explainable results than other

Sustainability ranking of desalination plants using Mamdani Fuzzy Logic Inference Systems
As water desalination continues to expand globally, desalination plants are continually under pressure to meet the requirements of sustainable development. However, the majority of desalination sustainability research has focused on new desalination projects, with limited research on sustainability performance of existing desalination plants. This is particularly important while considering countries with limited resources for freshwater such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as it is heavily reliant on existing desalination infrastructure. In this regard, the current research deals with the sustainability analysis of desalination processes using a generic sustainability ranking framework based on Mamdani Fuzzy Logic Inference Systems. The fuzzy-based models were validated using data from two typical desalination plants in the UAE. The promising results obtained from the fuzzy ranking framework suggest this more in-depth sustainability analysis should be beneficial due to its flexibility and adaptability in meeting the requirements of desalination sustainability
AI and OR in management of operations: history and trends
The last decade has seen a considerable growth in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for operations management with the aim of finding solutions to problems that are increasing in complexity and scale. This paper begins by setting the context for the survey through a historical perspective of OR and AI. An extensive survey of applications of AI techniques for operations management, covering a total of over 1200 papers published from 1995 to 2004 is then presented. The survey utilizes Elsevier's ScienceDirect database as a source. Hence, the survey may not cover all the relevant journals but includes a sufficiently wide range of publications to make it representative of the research in the field. The papers are categorized into four areas of operations management: (a) design, (b) scheduling, (c) process planning and control and (d) quality, maintenance and fault diagnosis. Each of the four areas is categorized in terms of the AI techniques used: genetic algorithms, case-based reasoning, knowledge-based systems, fuzzy logic and hybrid techniques. A methodology for the selection of new technologies in the aviation industry
The purpose of this report is to present a technology selection methodology to
quantify both tangible and intangible benefits of certain technology
alternatives within a fuzzy environment. Specifically, it describes an
application of the theory of fuzzy sets to hierarchical structural analysis and
economic evaluations for utilisation in the industry. The report proposes a
complete methodology to accurately select new technologies. A computer based
prototype model has been developed to handle the more complex fuzzy
calculations. Decision-makers are only required to express their opinions on
comparative importance of various factors in linguistic terms rather than exact
numerical values. These linguistic variable scales, such as ‘very high’, ‘high’,
‘medium’, ‘low’ and ‘very low’, are then converted into fuzzy numbers, since it
becomes more meaningful to quantify a subjective measurement into a range rather
than in an exact value. By aggregating the hierarchy, the preferential weight of
each alternative technology is found, which is called fuzzy appropriate index.
The fuzzy appropriate indices of different technologies are then ranked and
preferential ranking orders of technologies are found. From the economic
evaluation perspective, a fuzzy cash flow analysis is employed. This deals
quantitatively with imprecision or uncertainties, as the cash flows are modelled
as triangular fuzzy numbers which represent ‘the most likely possible value’,
‘the most pessimistic value’ and ‘the most optimistic value’. By using this
methodology, the ambiguities involved in the assessment data can be effectively
represented and processed to assure a more convincing and effective decision-
making process when selecting new technologies in which to invest. The prototype

WHY FUZZY ANALYTIC HIERARCHY PROCESS APPROACH FOR TRANSPORT PROBLEMS?
The evaluation of transport projects has become increasingly complex. Different aspects have to be taken into account and the consequences of the problems are usually far reaching and the different policy alternatives are numerous and difficult to predict. Several pressure or action groups have also emerged causing an even more complex decision making process. The use of multi criteria analysis for the evaluation of transport projects has increased due to this increasing complexity of the problem situation. At the same time, the importance of stakeholders within this evaluation process should have been recognized. Researches on transport projects are generally carried out to provide information to policymakers that have to operate within restrictive parameters (political, economical, social, etc…). Researchers should therefore take greater account of the different priorities of stakeholders such as policymakers, private enterprises and households. These stakeholders should be incorporated explicitly in the evaluation process. The Analytic Hierarchy Process is one of the Fuzzy Multiple Criteria Decision Making methods. It can be applied in a very broad range of applications of decision problems. Logistics, urban planning, public politics, marketing, finance, education, economics are a part of this wide application area. In transport subjects it can be used for the evaluation of transport policy measures or decision making problems. Due to its wide range application area, it has been an exciting research subject for many different field researchers. The aim of this paper is to introduce AHP method and to offer how to benefit it for the preference of urban planners in transport problems. This paper is composed of two main parts. First part consists of the literature survey regarding with the AHP and its application areas. The advantage of methods had been mentioned. Second part focuses on a sample application of AHP technique. The study uses AHP technique to determine the selection criteria in the transhipment port selection decision-making process. A robust fuzzy possibilistic AHP approach for partner selection in international strategic alliance
The international strategic alliance is an inevitable solution for making competitive advantage and reducing the risk in today’s business environment. Partner selection is an important part in success of partnerships, and meanwhile it is a complicated decision because of various dimensions of the problem and inherent conflicts of stockholders. The purpose of this paper is to provide a practical approach to the problem of partner selection in international strategic alliances, which fulfills the gap between theories of inter-organizational relationships and quantitative models. Thus, a novel Robust Fuzzy Possibilistic AHP approach is proposed for combining the benefits of two complementary theories of inter-organizational relationships named, (1) Resource-based view, and (2) Transaction-cost theory and considering Fit theory as the perquisite of alliance success. The Robust Fuzzy Possibilistic AHP approach is a noveldevelopment of Interval-AHP technique employing robust formulation; aimed at handling the ambiguity of the problem and let the use of intervals as pairwise judgments. The proposed approach was compared with existing approaches, and the results show that it provides the best quality solutions in terms of minimum error degree. Pre-emptive resource-constrained multimode project scheduling using genetic algorithm: a dynamic forward approach
Purpose: The issue resource over-allocating is a big concern for project engineers in the process
of scheduling project activities. Resource over-allocating drawback is frequently seen after
scheduling of a project in practice which causes a schedule to be useless. Modifying an
over-allocated schedule is very complicated and needs a lot of efforts and time. In this paper, a
new and fast tracking method is proposed to schedule large scale projects which can help project
engineers to schedule the project rapidly and with more confidence.
Design/methodology/approach: In this article, a forward approach for maximizing net
present value (NPV) in multi-mode resource constrained project scheduling problem while
assuming discounted positive cash flows (MRCPSP-DCF) is proposed. The progress payment
method is used and all resources are considered as pre-emptible. The proposed approach
maximizes NPV using unscheduled resources through resource calendar in forward mode. For
this purpose, a Genetic Algorithm is applied to solve.
Findings: The findings show that the proposed method is an effective way to maximize NPV in
MRCPSP-DCF problems while activity splitting is allowed. The proposed algorithm is very fast
and can schedule experimental cases with 1000 variables and 100 resources in few seconds. The
results are then compared with branch and bound method and simulated annealing algorithm and
it is found the proposed genetic algorithm can provide results with better quality. Then algorithm
is then applied for scheduling a hospital in practice.
Originality/value: The method can be used alone or as a macro in Microsoft Office Project®
Software to schedule MRCPSP-DCF problems or to modify resource over-allocated activities
after scheduling a project. This can help project engineers to schedule project activities rapidly
