Towards a Java Subtyping Operad
The subtyping relation in Java exhibits self-similarity. The self-similarity
in Java subtyping is interesting and intricate due to the existence of wildcard
types and, accordingly, the existence of three subtyping rules for generic
types: covariant subtyping, contravariant subtyping and invariant subtyping.
Supporting bounded type variables also adds to the complexity of the subtyping
relation in Java and in other generic nominally-typed OO languages such as C#
and Scala. In this paper we explore defining an operad to model the
construction of the subtyping relation in Java and in similar generic
nominally-typed OO programming languages. Operads, from category theory, are
frequently used to model self-similar phenomena. The Java subtyping operad, we
hope, will shed more light on understanding the type systems of generic

Distributed tuplespace and location management - an integrated perspective using Bluetooth
Location based or "context aware" computing is becoming increasingly recognized as a vital part of a mobile computing environment. As a consequence, the need for location-management middleware is widely recognized and actively researched. Location management is frequently offered to the application through an API where the location is given in the form of coordinates. It is the opinion of the authors that a localization API should offer localized data (e.g. direction to the nearest pharmacy) directly through a transparent and integrated API. Our proposed middleware for location and context management is built on top of Mobispace. Mobispace is a distributed tuplespace made for J2me units where replication between local replicas takes place with a central server (over GPRS) or with other mobile units (using Bluetooth). Since a Bluetooth connection indicates physical proximity to another node, a set of stationary nodes may distribute locality information over Bluetooth connections, and this information may be retrieved through the ordinary tuplespace AP
Querying XML data streams from wireless sensor networks: an evaluation of query engines
As the deployment of wireless sensor networks increase and their application domain widens, the opportunity for effective use of XML filtering and streaming query engines is ever more present. XML filtering engines aim to provide efficient real-time querying of streaming XML encoded data. This paper provides a detailed analysis of several such engines, focusing on the technology involved, their capabilities, their support for XPath and their performance. Our experimental evaluation identifies which filtering engine is best suited to process a given query based on its properties.
