A High School Camp on Algorithms and Coding in Jamaica
This is a report on JamCoders, a four-week long computer-science camp for
high school students in Jamaica. The camp teaches college-level coding and
algorithms, and targets academically excellent students in grades 9--11 (ages
14--17). Qualitative assessment shows that the camp was, in general terms, a
success. We reflect on the background and academic structure of the camp and
share key takeaways on designing and operating a successful camp. We analyze
data collected before, during and after the camp and map the effects of
demographic differences on student performance in camp. We conclude with a
discussion on possible improvements on our approach.Comment: To appear in Proceedings of the 55th ACM Technical Symposium on

Digital Middle Eastern Studies : challenges, ethics, and the digital humanities
textThis professional report explores the adoption of digital humanities practices in the field of Middle Eastern Studies, focusing on what Middle Eastern Studies contributes to overall digital humanities discussions. An increase in conferences, panels, and workshops since 2013 shows that scholars in Middle Eastern Studies and related fields, such as Islamic Studies, display an interest in the digital humanities and the power of academic digital tools and methods to contribute to their work. Middle Eastern Studies as a discipline faces unique challenges in the adoption of digital humanities practices, arising from its interdisciplinary, geographically-focused nature, problems working with non-Roman scripts in the digital environment, and ethical issues based on the history of colonialism in the region. Due to U.S. foreign policy interests and the unintended applications of digital Middle Eastern Studies research, scholars working with these methods should carefully consider the impact their work may have on individuals currently living in the Middle East.InformationMiddle Eastern Studie
An Epidemiology of Information: Data Mining the 1918 Influenza Pandemic
An Epidemiology of Information: Data Mining the 1918 Influenza Pandemic seeks to harness the power of data mining techniques with the interpretive analytics of the humanities and social sciences to understand how newspapers shaped public opinion and represented authoritative knowledge during this deadly pandemic. This project makes use of the more than 100 newspaper titles for 1918 available from Chronicling America at the United States Library of Congress and the Peel’s Prairie Provinces collection at the University of Alberta Library. The application of algorithmic techniques enables the domain expert to systematically explore a broad repository of data and identify qualitative features of the pandemic in the small scale as well as the genealogy of information flow in the large scale. This research can provide methods for understanding the spread of information and the flow of disease in other societies facing the threat of pandemics
Women with Disabilities in the State of Qatar
The launch of "Qatar University Research Magazine" marks the university's numerous achievements in the field of scientific research. It will also serve as a platform to highlight all our research related initiatives and activities carried out by the various research centers and colleges within the university

Visual Arts Education for Grades 6-12 in Arkansas and Its Changes Since the Twentieth Century
The field of education in the United States has changed greatly in many ways since its foundation. No longer do students meet in small log cabins with all ages together to learn the basics of a few practical subjects before returning to regular life. The federal government seeks to provide consistently updated standards for how children of all ages should be instructed and have frequently modernized the education system. From creating mandated subjects of learning, such as math, science, reading, writing, foreign languages, and art, raising teacher salaries, and instigating assessments to ensure complete subject literacy, America has shown in many ways that it values education. However, the push for reform concerning STEM education, which stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, grossly outweighs the support for art education, specifically in the visual arts
