On Designing Tattoo Registration and Matching Approaches in the Visible and SWIR Bands
Face, iris and fingerprint based biometric systems are well explored areas of research. However, there are law enforcement and military applications where neither of the aforementioned modalities may be available to be exploited for human identification. In such applications, soft biometrics may be the only clue available that can be used for identification or verification purposes. Tattoo is an example of such a soft biometric trait. Unlike face-based biometric systems that used in both same-spectral and cross-spectral matching scenarios, tattoo-based human identification is still a not fully explored area of research. At this point in time there are no pre-processing, feature extraction and matching algorithms using tattoo images captured at multiple bands. This thesis is focused on exploring solutions on two main challenging problems. The first one is cross-spectral tattoo matching. The proposed algorithmic approach is using as an input raw Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) band tattoo images and matches them successfully against their visible band counterparts. The SWIR tattoo images are captured at 1100 nm, 1200 nm, 1300 nm, 1400 nm and 1500 nm. After an empirical study where multiple photometric normalization techniques were used to pre-process the original multi-band tattoo images, only one was determined to significantly improve cross spectral tattoo matching performance. The second challenging problem was to develop a fully automatic visible-based tattoo image registration system based on SIFT descriptors and the RANSAC algorithm with a homography model. The proposed automated registration approach significantly improves the operational cost of a tattoo image identification system (using large scale tattoo image datasets), where the alignment of a pair of tattoo images by system operators needs to be performed manually. At the same time, tattoo matching accuracy is also improved (before vs. after automated alignment) by 45.87% for the NIST-Tatt-C database and 12.65% for the WVU-Tatt database
Unifying the Visible and Passive Infrared Bands: Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Multi-Spectral Face Recognition
Face biometrics leverages tools and technology in order to automate the identification of individuals. In most cases, biometric face recognition (FR) can be used for forensic purposes, but there remains the issue related to the integration of technology into the legal system of the court. The biggest challenge with the acceptance of the face as a modality used in court is the reliability of such systems under varying pose, illumination and expression, which has been an active and widely explored area of research over the last few decades (e.g. same-spectrum or homogeneous matching). The heterogeneous FR problem, which deals with matching face images from different sensors, should be examined for the benefit of military and law enforcement applications as well. In this work we are concerned primarily with visible band images (380-750 nm) and the infrared (IR) spectrum, which has become an area of growing interest.;For homogeneous FR systems, we formulate and develop an efficient, semi-automated, direct matching-based FR framework, that is designed to operate efficiently when face data is captured using either visible or passive IR sensors. Thus, it can be applied in both daytime and nighttime environments. First, input face images are geometrically normalized using our pre-processing pipeline prior to feature-extraction. Then, face-based features including wrinkles, veins, as well as edges of facial characteristics, are detected and extracted for each operational band (visible, MWIR, and LWIR). Finally, global and local face-based matching is applied, before fusion is performed at the score level. Although this proposed matcher performs well when same-spectrum FR is performed, regardless of spectrum, a challenge exists when cross-spectral FR matching is performed. The second framework is for the heterogeneous FR problem, and deals with the issue of bridging the gap across the visible and passive infrared (MWIR and LWIR) spectrums. Specifically, we investigate the benefits and limitations of using synthesized visible face images from thermal and vice versa, in cross-spectral face recognition systems when utilizing canonical correlation analysis (CCA) and locally linear embedding (LLE), a manifold learning technique for dimensionality reduction. Finally, by conducting an extensive experimental study we establish that the combination of the proposed synthesis and demographic filtering scheme increases system performance in terms of rank-1 identification rate
A Novel Framework for Highlight Reflectance Transformation Imaging
We propose a novel pipeline and related software tools for processing the multi-light image collections (MLICs) acquired in different application contexts to obtain shape and appearance information of captured surfaces, as well as to derive compact relightable representations of them. Our pipeline extends the popular Highlight Reflectance Transformation Imaging (H-RTI) framework, which is widely used in the Cultural Heritage domain. We support, in particular, perspective camera modeling, per-pixel interpolated light direction estimation, as well as light normalization correcting vignetting and uneven non-directional illumination. Furthermore, we propose two novel easy-to-use software tools to simplify all processing steps. The tools, in addition to support easy processing and encoding of pixel data, implement a variety of visualizations, as well as multiple reflectance-model-fitting options. Color image-based shape reconstruction of multi-color objects under general illumination conditions
Humans have the ability to infer the surface reflectance properties and three-dimensional shape of objects from two-dimensional photographs under simple and complex illumination fields. Unfortunately, the reported algorithms in the area of shape reconstruction require a number of simplifying assumptions that result in poor performance in uncontrolled imaging environments. Of all these simplifications, the assumptions of non-constant surface reflectance, globally consistent illumination, and multiple surface views are the most likely to be contradicted in typical environments. In this dissertation, three automatic algorithms for the recovery of surface shape given non-constant reflectance using a single-color image acquired are presented. In addition, a novel method for the identification and removal of shadows from simple scenes is discussed.In existing shape reconstruction algorithms for surfaces of constant reflectance, constraints based on the assumed smoothness of the objects are not explicitly used. Through Explicit incorporation of surface smoothness properties, the algorithms presented in this work are able to overcome the limitations of the previously reported algorithms and accurately estimate shape in the presence of varying reflectance. The three techniques developed for recovering the shape of multi-color surfaces differ in the method through which they exploit the surface smoothness property. They are summarized below:• Surface Recovery using Pre-Segmentation - this algorithm pre-segments the image into distinct color regions and employs smoothness constraints at the color-change boundaries to constrain and recover surface shape. This technique is computationally efficient and works well for images with distinct color regions, but does not perform well in the presence of high-frequency color textures that are difficult to segment.iv• Surface Recovery via Normal Propagation - this approach utilizes local gradient information to propagate a smooth surface solution from points of known orientation. While solution propagation eliminates the need for color-based image segmentation, the quality of the recovered surface can be degraded by high degrees of image noise due to reliance on local information.• Surface Recovery by Global Variational Optimization - this algorithm utilizes a normal gradient smoothness constraint in a non-linear optimization strategy, to iteratively solve for the globally optimal object surface. Because of its global nature, this approach is much less sensitive to noise than the normal propagation is, but requires significantly more computational resources.Results acquired through application of the above algorithms to various synthetic and real image data sets are presented for qualitative evaluation. A quantitative analysis of the algorithms is also discussed for quadratic shapes. The robustness of the three approaches to factors such as segmentation error and random image noise is also explored
Self-supervised Multi-level Face Model Learning for Monocular Reconstruction at over 250 Hz
The reconstruction of dense 3D models of face geometry and appearance from a
single image is highly challenging and ill-posed. To constrain the problem,
many approaches rely on strong priors, such as parametric face models learned
from limited 3D scan data. However, prior models restrict generalization of the
true diversity in facial geometry, skin reflectance and illumination. To
alleviate this problem, we present the first approach that jointly learns 1) a
regressor for face shape, expression, reflectance and illumination on the basis
of 2) a concurrently learned parametric face model. Our multi-level face model
combines the advantage of 3D Morphable Models for regularization with the
out-of-space generalization of a learned corrective space. We train end-to-end
on in-the-wild images without dense annotations by fusing a convolutional
encoder with a differentiable expert-designed renderer and a self-supervised
training loss, both defined at multiple detail levels. Our approach compares
favorably to the state-of-the-art in terms of reconstruction quality, better

How to Train a CAT: Learning Canonical Appearance Transformations for Direct Visual Localization Under Illumination Change
Direct visual localization has recently enjoyed a resurgence in popularity
with the increasing availability of cheap mobile computing power. The
competitive accuracy and robustness of these algorithms compared to
state-of-the-art feature-based methods, as well as their natural ability to
yield dense maps, makes them an appealing choice for a variety of mobile
robotics applications. However, direct methods remain brittle in the face of
appearance change due to their underlying assumption of photometric
consistency, which is commonly violated in practice. In this paper, we propose
to mitigate this problem by training deep convolutional encoder-decoder models
to transform images of a scene such that they correspond to a previously-seen
canonical appearance. We validate our method in multiple environments and
illumination conditions using high-fidelity synthetic RGB-D datasets, and
integrate the trained models into a direct visual localization pipeline,
yielding improvements in visual odometry (VO) accuracy through time-varying
illumination conditions, as well as improved metric relocalization performance
under illumination change, where conventional methods normally fail. We further
provide a preliminary investigation of transfer learning from synthetic to real
environments in a localization context. An open-source implementation of our
