Evaluation of Directive-Based GPU Programming Models on a Block Eigensolver with Consideration of Large Sparse Matrices
Achieving high performance and performance portability for large-scale scientific applications is a major challenge on heterogeneous computing systems such as many-core CPUs and accelerators like GPUs. In this work, we implement a widely used block eigensolver, Locally Optimal Block Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient (LOBPCG), using two popular directive based programming models (OpenMP and OpenACC) for GPU-accelerated systems. Our work differs from existing work in that it adopts a holistic approach that optimizes the full solver performance rather than narrowing the problem into small kernels (e.g., SpMM, SpMV). Our LOPBCG GPU implementation achieves a 2.8–4.3 speedup over an optimized CPU implementation when tested with four different input matrices. The evaluated configuration compared one Skylake CPU to one Skylake CPU and one NVIDIA V100 GPU. Our OpenMP and OpenACC LOBPCG GPU implementations gave nearly identical performance. We also consider how to create an efficient LOBPCG solver that can solve problems larger than GPU memory capacity. To this end, we create microbenchmarks representing the two dominant kernels (inner product and SpMM kernel) in LOBPCG and then evaluate performance when using two different programming approaches: tiling the kernels, and using Unified Memory with the original kernels. Our tiled SpMM implementation achieves a 2.9 and 48.2 speedup over the Unified Memory implementation on supercomputers with PCIe Gen3 and NVLink 2.0 CPU to GPU interconnects, respectively
On-board processing satellite network architecture and control study
The market for telecommunications services needs to be segmented into user classes having similar transmission requirements and hence similar network architectures. Use of the following transmission architecture was considered: satellite switched TDMA; TDMA up, TDM down; scanning (hopping) beam TDMA; FDMA up, TDM down; satellite switched MF/TDMA; and switching Hub earth stations with double hop transmission. A candidate network architecture will be selected that: comprises multiple access subnetworks optimized for each user; interconnects the subnetworks by means of a baseband processor; and optimizes the marriage of interconnection and access techniques. An overall network control architecture will be provided that will serve the needs of the baseband and satellite switched RF interconnected subnetworks. The results of the studies shall be used to identify elements of network architecture and control that require the greatest degree of technology development to realize an operational system. This will be specified in terms of: requirements of the enabling technology; difference from the current available technology; and estimate of the development requirements needed to achieve an operational system. Preparing sparse solvers for exascale computing.
Sparse solvers provide essential functionality for a wide variety of scientific applications. Highly parallel sparse solvers are essential for continuing advances in high-fidelity, multi-physics and multi-scale simulations, especially as we target exascale platforms. This paper describes the challenges, strategies and progress of the US Department of Energy Exascale Computing project towards providing sparse solvers for exascale computing platforms. We address the demands of systems with thousands of high-performance node devices where exposing concurrency, hiding latency and creating alternative algorithms become essential. The efforts described here are works in progress, highlighting current success and upcoming challenges. Efficiently listing bounded length st-paths
The problem of listing the shortest simple (loopless) -paths in a
graph has been studied since the early 1960s. For a non-negatively weighted
graph with vertices and edges, the most efficient solution is an
algorithm for directed graphs by Yen and Lawler
[Management Science, 1971 and 1972], and an algorithm for
the undirected version by Katoh et al. [Networks, 1982], both using
space. In this work, we consider a different parameterization for this problem:
instead of bounding the number of -paths output, we bound their length. For
the bounded length parameterization, we propose new non-trivial algorithms
matching the time complexity of the classic algorithms but using only
space. Moreover, we provide a unified framework such that the solutions to both
parameterizations -- the classic -shortest and the new length-bounded paths
-- can be seen as two different traversals of a same tree, a Dijkstra-like and

AMaχoS—Abstract Machine for Xcerpt
Web query languages promise convenient and efficient access
to Web data such as XML, RDF, or Topic Maps. Xcerpt is one such Web
query language with strong emphasis on novel high-level constructs for
effective and convenient query authoring, particularly tailored to versatile
access to data in different Web formats such as XML or RDF.
However, so far it lacks an efficient implementation to supplement the
convenient language features. AMaχoS is an abstract machine implementation
for Xcerpt that aims at efficiency and ease of deployment. It
strictly separates compilation and execution of queries: Queries are compiled
once to abstract machine code that consists in (1) a code segment
with instructions for evaluating each rule and (2) a hint segment that
provides the abstract machine with optimization hints derived by the
query compilation. This article summarizes the motivation and principles
behind AMaχoS and discusses how its current architecture realizes
these principles
