    Single-layer economic model predictive control for periodic operation

    In this paper we consider periodic optimal operation of constrained periodic linear systems. We propose an economic model predictive controller based on a single layer that unites dynamic real time optimization and control. The proposed controller guarantees closed-loop convergence to the optimal periodic trajectory that minimizes the average operation cost for a given economic criterion. A priori calculation of the optimal trajectory is not required and if the economic cost function is changed, recursive feasibility and convergence to the new periodic optimal trajectory is guaranteed. The results are demonstrated with two simulation examples, a four tank system, and a simplified model of a section of Barcelona's water distribution network.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author’s final draft

    Robust optimization based energy dispatch in smart grids considering demand uncertainty

    In this study we discuss the application of robust optimization to the problem of economic energy dispatch in smart grids. Robust optimization based MPC strategies for tackling uncertain load demands are developed. Unexpected additive disturbances are modelled by defining an affine dependence between the control inputs and the uncertain load demands. The developed strategies were applied to a hybrid power system connected to an electrical power grid. Furthermore, to demonstrate the superiority of the standard Economic MPC over the MPC tracking, a comparison (e.g average daily cost) between the standard MPC tracking, the standard Economic MPC, and the integration of both in one-layer and two-layer approaches was carried out. The goal of this research is to design a controller based on Economic MPC strategies, that tackles uncertainties, in order to minimise economic costs and guarantee service reliability of the system.Postprint (author's final draft

    A Gauss-Newton-Like Hessian Approximation for Economic NMPC

    Economic Model Predictive Control (EMPC) has recently become popular because of its ability to control constrained nonlinear systems while explicitly optimizing a prescribed performance criterion. Large performance gains have been reported for many applications and closed-loop stability has been recently investigated. However, computational performance still remains an open issue and only few contributions have proposed real-time algorithms tailored to EMPC. We perform a step towards computationally cheap algorithms for EMPC by proposing a new positive-definite Hessian approximation which does not hinder fast convergence and is suitable for being used within the real-time iteration (RTI) scheme. We provide two simulation examples to demonstrate the effectiveness of RTI-based EMPC relying on the proposed Hessian approximation

DWNs have some periodic behaviours because of the daily seasonality of water demands and electrical energy price. The periodic terminal constraint and economic terminal cost are implemented in the EMPC controller design for the purpose of achieving convergence. The feasibility of the proposed EMPC strategy when disturbances are considered is guaranteed by means of soft constraints implemented by using slack variables. Finally, the comparison results in a case study of the D-Town water network is provided by applying the EMPC strategy with or without periodic terminal constraints.Accepted versio
