Advances in Social Media Research:Past, Present and Future
Social media comprises communication websites that facilitate relationship forming between users from diverse backgrounds, resulting in a rich social structure. User generated content encourages inquiry and decision-making. Given the relevance of social media to various stakeholders, it has received significant attention from researchers of various fields, including information systems. There exists no comprehensive review that integrates and synthesises the findings of literature on social media. This study discusses the findings of 132 papers (in selected IS journals) on social media and social networking published between 1997 and 2017. Most papers reviewed here examine the behavioural side of social media, investigate the aspect of reviews and recommendations, and study its integration for organizational purposes. Furthermore, many studies have investigated the viability of online communities/social media as a marketing medium, while others have explored various aspects of social media, including the risks associated with its use, the value that it creates, and the negative stigma attached to it within workplaces. The use of social media for information sharing during critical events as well as for seeking and/or rendering help has also been investigated in prior research. Other contexts include political and public administration, and the comparison between traditional and social media. Overall, our study identifies multiple emergent themes in the existing corpus, thereby furthering our understanding of advances in social media research. The integrated view of the extant literature that our study presents can help avoid duplication by future researchers, whilst offering fruitful lines of enquiry to help shape research for this emerging field
Unleashing the Potential of Argument Mining for IS Research: A Systematic Review and Research Agenda
Argument mining (AM) represents the unique use of natural language processing (NLP) techniques to extract arguments from unstructured data automatically. Despite expanding on commonly used NLP techniques, such as sentiment analysis, AM has hardly been applied in information systems (IS) research yet. Consequentially, knowledge about the potentials for the usage of AM on IS use cases appears to be still limited. First, we introduce AM and its current usage in fields beyond IS. To address this research gap, we conducted a systematic literature review on IS literature to identify IS use cases that can potentially be extended with AM. We develop eleven text-based IS research topics that provide structure and context to the use cases and their AM potentials. Finally, we formulate a novel research agenda to guide both researchers and practitioners to design, compare and evaluate the use of AM for text-based applications and research streams in IS
Are Sustainability Reports Informative About Firm Value and Performance? A Text Mining Approach
A corporate social responsibility (CSR) report is an important tool for disseminating a companyâs sustainability efforts. The informativeness of CSR reports in relation to key performance indicators (KPIs) of companies is not well studied. We define eight different attributes to characterize textual disclosure and identify six topic distributions across 1233 CSR reports submitted by 196 major US firms during 2005-2017. We analyze the association of these attributes and topics with firm performance and firm value using hierarchical Bayesian modeling. Our results show that while multiple topics and textual attributes are related to firm value, only word length is significantly linked to the performance of firms in general. Our study informs firms about best practices in sustainability reporting and notifies investors and regulators about present practices in CSR reporting
E-Quality: An Analysis of Digital Equity Discourse and Co-Production in the Era of COVID-19
The digital divide refers to the social stratification due to an unequal ability to access, adapt, and create knowledge via information and communication technologies (Andreasson, 2015). Digitally disadvantaged individuals have inadequate access to services and resources, exacerbating existing vulnerabilities. The COVID-19 pandemic instigated a new model of digital equity policymaking that leverages co-production between numerous actors. As citizens faced new financial and community constraints and governments reached administrative capacities, both the digital divide and the policymaking process evolved.
This inductive study explores how digital equity policymaking shifted to a co-production model (Ostrom, 1996) amid the pandemic. Using a sequential mixed-methods approach, this research considers the interconnections of digital equity, co-production, and crisis policymaking. Digital divide discourse was first examined through a large-scale text analysis of verified tweets. Methods of investigation include natural language processing techniques, regression modeling, and unsupervised machine learning topic modeling. Descriptive and inferential analyses demonstrate a statistically significant increase in policy discourse as well as a diversification of topics, though suggest a disconnect between outputs and on-the-ground needs.
Next, semi-structured interviews were conducted with City of Boston policymakers, and the resulting data was open-coded and axially coded to reveal insights into the design and implementation of co-productive solutions. Additionally, interviews detail what conditions contribute to successful outcomes while working with limited time, knowledge, and resources. Analyses reveal that co-productive behavior is critical to coping with the effects of the pandemic and highlight the influential role of community-based organizations. Furthermore, the study provides contextual information on co-production prerequisites that were previously understood, and sheds light on interpersonal conditions that Ostrom does not address. This dissertation contributes to the developing body of scholarly literature on the digital divide in the era of COVID-19. This case study also advances theoretical knowledge, offers methodological innovations, and provides concrete policy recommendations to promote more egalitarian digital use

A Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) Semantic Text Analytics Approach to Explore Topical Features in Charity Crowdfunding Campaigns
Crowdfunding in the realm of the Social Web has received substantial
attention, with prior research examining various aspects of campaigns,
including project objectives, durations, and influential project categories for
successful fundraising. These factors are crucial for entrepreneurs seeking
donor support. However, the terrain of charity crowdfunding within the Social
Web remains relatively unexplored, lacking comprehension of the motivations
driving donations that often lack concrete reciprocation. Distinct from
conventional crowdfunding that offers tangible returns, charity crowdfunding
relies on intangible rewards like tax advantages, recognition posts, or
advisory roles. Such details are often embedded within campaign narratives,
yet, the analysis of textual content in charity crowdfunding is limited. This
study introduces an inventive text analytics framework, utilizing Latent
Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) to extract latent themes from textual descriptions
of charity campaigns. The study has explored four different themes, two each in
campaign and incentive descriptions. Campaign description themes are focused on
child and elderly health mainly the ones who are diagnosed with terminal
diseases. Incentive description themes are based on tax benefits, certificates,
and appreciation posts. These themes, combined with numerical parameters,
predict campaign success. The study was successful in using Random Forest
Classifier to predict success of the campaign using both thematic and numerical
parameters. The study distinguishes thematic categories, particularly medical
need-based charity and general causes, based on project and incentive
descriptions. In conclusion, this research bridges the gap by showcasing topic
modelling utility in uncharted charity crowdfunding domains
Market Engineering
This open access book provides a broad range of insights on market engineering and information management. It covers topics like auctions, stock markets, electricity markets, the sharing economy, information and emotions in markets, smart decision-making in cities and other systems, and methodological approaches to conceptual modeling and taxonomy development. Overall, this book is a source of inspiration for everybody working on the vision of advancing the science of engineering markets and managing information for contributing to a bright, sustainable, digital world. Markets are powerful and extremely efficient mechanisms for coordinating individualsâ and organizationsâ behavior in a complex, networked economy. Thus, designing, monitoring, and regulating markets is an essential task of todayâs society. This task does not only derive from a purely economic point of view. Leveraging market forces can also help to tackle pressing social and environmental challenges. Moreover, markets process, generate, and reveal information. This information is a production factor and a valuable economic asset. In an increasingly digital world, it is more essential than ever to understand the life cycle of information from its creation and distribution to its use. Both markets and the flow of information should not arbitrarily emerge and develop based on individual, profit-driven actors. Instead, they should be engineered to serve best the whole societyâs goals. This motivation drives the research fields of market engineering and information management. With this book, the editors and authors honor Professor Dr. Christof Weinhardt for his enormous and ongoing contribution to market engineering and information management research and practice. It was presented to him on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday in April 2021. Thank you very much, Christof, for so many years of cooperation, support, inspiration, and friendship
A Focused Evaluation of Sales Employees\u27 Ethics Training and Its Effect on the Diffusion of Ethics in a Financial Organization
Ethical scandals have continued to batter corporate America into the twenty-first century. Companies such as Enron and MCI WorldCom became household names overnight because of ethical issues that shuttered the organizationsâ operations and stunned shareholders. Training has served as a primary mechanism for companies to impart ethical values in employees and leadership teams. However, despite the ongoing focus and resources dedicated to education and associate development in this area, historically there appears to be no diffusion of ethical standards within organizations. There is a lack of consensus in current research regarding the effectiveness of organizational ethics training and its ability to diffuse ethical standards to employees to influence their behaviors.
This mixed-methods study utilized Rogersâ diffusion of innovations theory as a framework to investigate how ethics training impacts the diffusion of ethical standards throughout a financial organization and its frontline sales force. It examined the theoryâs five innovation characteristics of relative advantage, compatibility, trialability, observability, and complexity. The study also incorporated the work of Moore and Benbasat, utilizing their validated diffusion survey instrument as a primary avenue for data collection and examining three additional diffusion attributes that accompanied their researchâimage, result demonstrability, and voluntariness.
This paper serves as a new starting point for diffusion studies because the current body of research is silent in how diffusion of innovations theory informs the effectiveness of ethics training. It provides recommendations for future research in the fields of diffusion and human resources and workforce development education. It also offers a unique perspective and opportunity to identify a root cause of Americaâs ethic scandal epidemic
