    Designing a Framework for Exchanging Partial Sets of BIM Information on a Cloud-Based Service

    The rationale behind this research study was based on the recognised difficulty of exchanging data at element or object level due to the inefficiencies of compatible hardware and software. Interoperability depicts the need to pass data between applications, allowing multiple types of experts and applications to contribute to the work at hand. The only way that software file exchanges between two applications can produce consistent data and change management results for large projects is through a building model repository. The overall aim of this thesis was to design and develop an integrated process that would advance key decisions at an early design stage through faster information exchanges during collaborative work. In the construction industry, Building Information Modeling is the most integrated shared model between all disciplines. It is based on a manufacturing-like process where standardised deliverables are used throughout the life cycle with effective collaboration as its main driving force. However, the dilemma is how to share these properties of BIM applications on one single platform asynchronously. Cloud Computing is a centralized heterogeneous network that enables different applications to be connected to each other. The methodology used in the research was based on triangulation of data which incorporated many techniques featuring a mixture of both quantitative and qualitative analysis. The results identified the need to re-engineer Simplified Markup Language, in order to exchange partial data sets of intelligent object architecture on an integrated platform. The designed and tested prototype produced findings that enhanced project decisions at a relatively early design stage, improved communication and collaboration techniques and cross disciple co-ordination

    The First 25 Years of the Bled eConference: Themes and Impacts

    The Bled eConference is the longest-running themed conference associated with the Information Systems discipline. The focus throughout its first quarter-century has been the application of electronic tools, migrating progressively from Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) via Inter-Organisational Systems (IOS) and eCommerce to encompass all aspects of the use of networking facilities in industry and government, and more recently by individuals, groups and society as a whole. This paper reports on an examination of the conference titles and of the titles and abstracts of the 773 refereed papers published in the Proceedings since 1995. This identified a long and strong focus on categories of electronic business and corporate perspectives, which has broadened in recent years to encompass the democratic, the social and the personal. The conference\u27s extend well beyond the papers and their thousands of citations and tens of thousands of downloads. Other impacts have included innovative forms of support for the development of large numbers of graduate students, and the many international research collaborations that have been conceived and developed in a beautiful lake-side setting in Slovenia

    Meta-scheduling Issues in Interoperable HPCs, Grids and Clouds

    Over the last years, interoperability among resources has been emerged as one of the most challenging research topics. However, the commonality of the complexity of the architectures (e.g., heterogeneity) and the targets that each computational paradigm including HPC, grids and clouds aims to achieve (e.g., flexibility) remain the same. This is to efficiently orchestrate resources in a distributed computing fashion by bridging the gap among local and remote participants. Initially, this is closely related with the scheduling concept which is one of the most important issues for designing a cooperative resource management system, especially in large scale settings such as in grids and clouds. Within this context, meta-scheduling offers additional functionalities in the area of interoperable resource management, this is because of its great agility to handle sudden variations and dynamic situations in user demands. Accordingly, the case of inter-infrastructures, including InterCloud, entitle that the decentralised meta-scheduling scheme overcome issues like consolidated administration management, bottleneck and local information exposition. In this work, we detail the fundamental issues for developing an effective interoperable meta-scheduler for e-infrastructures in general and InterCloud in particular. Finally, we describe a simulation and experimental configuration based on real grid workload traces to demonstrate the interoperable setting as well as provide experimental results as part of a strategic plan for integrating future meta-schedulers

    TECHNOLOGICAL, ORGANIZATIONAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS ON THE ADOPTION OF CLOUD COMPUTING IN INSURANCE INDUSTRIES IN KENYA: A CASE STUDY OF UAP-OLD MUTUAL, NAIROBI, KENYA

    The main objective of this study was to find out how the technological, organizational and environmental factors affect the adoption of cloud computing services within insurance industries in Kenya with a case study of UAPOld mutual. The study was anchored on Technological, Organizational and Environmental model; technology acceptance model and Innovation Diffusion theory in its argument. The study used descriptive research design and adopted the stratified random technique. The target population consisted of 483 employees at the headquarters in Nairobi out of which a sample of 215 was picked. This study used questionnaires with closed questions to extract responses from members of the sample population. Data collected was purely quantitative and it was analyzed with the aid of SPSS V23 and presented on tables, figures and charts. Additionally, the study used a multiple regression analysis for the purpose of analysing the relationship between the study variables. From results, Technological factors, Organizational factors and Environment factors all have a significant relationship with the adoption of cloud computing at 5% level of significance and 95% level of confidence. However based on the explanatory power of coefficient of determination the indepedent variables organizational factors had the highest expalantory power of 0.675 or 67.5%, P<0.05, thus being the most significant Variable; Environmental Factors had 0.575 or 57.5%, P<0.05 while Technological factors were the least significant with 0.527 or 52.7%, P<0.05). This showed that all the variables have significantly relationship with the dependent variable (adoption of Cloud Computing). The study also found that Technological factors affected the adoption of Cloud Computing at UAP-Old mutual; Organizational Factors had a positive influence on the adoption of Cloud computing at UAP-Old mutual; Further it was evident that Environmental factors have a significant influence on adoption to cloud computing at UAP-Old mutual. This showed that all the variables have a significant relationship with the dependent variable (Adoption of Cloud Computing). The study further recommended that to be able to develop new ideas, employees must have enough knowledge about the field they operate in to move it forward. To support this, a work environment that is tolerant and welcomes new ideas
