    Management of Digital Video Broadcasting Services in Open Delivery Platforms

    The future of Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) is moving towards solutions offering an efficient way of carrying interactive IP multimedia services over digital terrestrial broadcasting networks to handheld terminals. One of the most promising technologies is Digital Video Broadcasting-Handheld (DVB-H), at present under standardisation. Services deployed via this type of DVB technologies should enjoy reliability comparable to TV services and high quality standards. However, the market at present does not provide effective and economical solutions for the deployment of such services over multi-domain IP networks, due to their high level of unreliability. This paper focuses on service management, service level agreement (SLA) and network performance requirements of DVB-H services. Experimental results are presented concerning QoS sensitivity to network performance of DVB-H services delivered over a multi-domain IP network. Moreover, a solution for efficient and cost effective service management via QoS monitoring and control and network SLA design is proposed. The solution gives DVB-H operators the possibility of fully managing service QoS without being tied to third party operators

M3Omon behaves as an intermediate layer between the traffic and monitoring applications that provides advanced features, high performance and low cost. Such advanced features leverage a multi-granular and multi-purpose approach to the monitoring problem. Multi-granular monitoring gives answer to tasks that use traffic aggregates to identify an event, and requires either flow records or packet data or even both to understand it and, eventually, take the convenient countermeasures. M3Omon provides a simple API to access traffic simultaneously at several different granularities—i.e., packet-level, flow-level and aggregate statistics. The multi-purposed design of M3Omon allows not only performing tasks in parallel that are specifically targeted to different traffic-related purposes (e.g., traffic classification and intrusion detection) but also sharing granularities between applications—e.g., several concurrent applications fed from flow records that are provided by M3Omon. Finally, the low-cost characteristic is brought by off-the-shelf systems (the combination of open-source software and commodity hardware) and the high performance is achieved thanks to modifications in the standard NIC driver, low-level hardware interaction, efficient memory management and programming optimization

    Mobile home security with GPRS

    This thesis presents the results of an honours project on the development of a security system for use on mobile devices. Mobile Home Security (MHS) is a prototype system that aimed to fully investigate a potential use of the wireless high-speed technology General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) in transmitting video from a static location. This thesis Mobile Home Security with GPRS describes in detail the design and developmental stages for the system. The research focused on the sending of video from a security capture device over a high speed radio network. The first stage of the research involved the design and development of a prototype system. In the next stage three critical aspects of the system were studied, capturing of video, transfer of security video over a packet network and the playback of the video. Test cases were performed in succession and measurements were obtained to study for deficiencies in the MHS system. Transfers of video over the different proposed GPRS network speeds and quality video playback on a mobile computing device were examined to determine the optimum settings for the system. The results from the test cases proved that the MHS system can be effectively used as a wireless security system. The successful implementation of the MHS system provided a positive indication that the MHS system and other video applications like it can utilise the high speed GPRS network to provide wireless video based solutions
