    Simple chain grammars

    A subclass of the LR(0)-grammars, the class of simple chain grammars is introduced. Although there exist simple chain grammars which are not LL(k) for any k, this new class of grammars is very close related to the class of LL(1) and simple LL(1) grammars. In fact it can be proved (not in this paper) that each simple chain grammar has an equivalent simple LL(1) grammar. A very simple (bottom-up) parsing method is provided. This method follows directly from the definition of a simple chain grammar and can easily be given in terms of the well-known LR(0) parsing method

    AbstractEvery context-free grammar can be transformed into one in double Greibach operator form, that satisfies both double Greibach form and operator form. Examination of the expressive power of various well-known subclasses of context-free grammars in double Greibach and/or operator form yields an extended hierarchy of language classes. Basic decision properties such as equivalence can be stated in stronger forms via new classes of languages in this hierarchy

    Boundary graph grammars with dynamic edge relabeling

    AbstractMost NLC-like graph grammars generate node-labeled graphs. As one of the exceptions, eNCE graph grammars generate graphs with edge labels as well. We investigate this type of graph grammar and show that the use of edge labels (together with the NCE feature) is responsible for some new properties. Especially boundary eNCE (B-eNCE) grammars are considered. First, although eNCE grammars have the context-sensitive feature of “blocking edges,” we show that B-eNCE grammars do not. Second, we show the existence of a Chomsky normal form and a Greibach normal form for B-eNCE grammars. Third, the boundary eNCE languages are characterized in terms of regular tree and string languages. Fourth, we prove that the class of (boundary) eNCE languages properly contains the closure of the class of (boundary) NLC languages under node relabelings. Analogous results are shown for linear eNCE grammars

    AbstractVarious types of grammars can be used to describe context-free languages. Such are context-free grammars and their normal form restrictions. Rewriting of a context-free grammar to an equivalent grammar in required (normal) form can cause a change of parameters of the grammar such as the number of rules, the number of nonterminals, etc. Greibach normal form grammars and position restricted grammars will be investigated from the point of view of descriptional complexity of context-free languages

    These lecture notes present some basic notions and results on Automata Theory, Formal Languages Theory, Computability Theory, and Parsing Theory. I prepared these notes for a course on Automata, Languages, and Translators which I am teaching at the University of Roma Tor Vergata. More material on these topics and on parsing techniques for context-free languages can be found in standard textbooks such as [1, 8, 9]. The reader is encouraged to look at those books. A theorem denoted by the triple k.m.n is in Chapter k and Section m, and within that section it is identified by the number n. Analogous numbering system is used for algorithms, corollaries, definitions, examples, exercises, figures, and remarks. We use ‘iff’ to mean ‘if and only if’.     Graph Interpolation Grammars as Context-Free Automata

    A derivation step in a Graph Interpolation Grammar has the effect of scanning an input token. This feature, which aims at emulating the incrementality of the natural parser, restricts the formal power of GIGs. This contrasts with the fact that the derivation mechanism involves a context-sensitive device similar to tree adjunction in TAGs. The combined effect of input-driven derivation and restricted context-sensitiveness would be conceivably unfortunate if it turned out that Graph Interpolation Languages did not subsume Context Free Languages while being partially context-sensitive. This report sets about examining relations between CFGs and GIGs, and shows that GILs are a proper superclass of CFLs. It also brings out a strong equivalence between CFGs and GIGs for the class of CFLs. Thus, it lays the basis for meaningfully investigating the amount of context-sensitiveness supported by GIGs, but leaves this investigation for further research

    Pushdown Automata and Context-Free Grammars in Bisimulation Semantics

    The Turing machine models an old-fashioned computer, that does not interact with the user or with other computers, and only does batch processing. Therefore, we came up with a Reactive Turing Machine that does not have these shortcomings. In the Reactive Turing Machine, transitions have labels to give a notion of interactivity. In the resulting process graph, we use bisimilarity instead of language equivalence. Subsequently, we considered other classical theorems and notions from automata theory and formal languages theory. In this paper, we consider the classical theorem of the correspondence between pushdown automata and context-free grammars. By changing the process operator of sequential composition to a sequencing operator with intermediate acceptance, we get a better correspondence in our setting. We find that the missing ingredient to recover the full correspondence is the addition of a notion of state awareness
