    Supporting Users of Open Online Courses with Recommendations: an Algorithmic Study

    Almost all studies on course recommenders in online platforms target closed online platforms that belong to a University or other provider. Recently, a demand has developed that targets open platforms. Such platforms lack rich user profiles with content metadata. Instead they log user interactions. We report on how user interactions and activities tracked in open online learning platforms may generate recommendations. We use data from the OpenU open online learning platform in use by the Open University of the Netherlands to investigate the application of several state-of-the-art recommender algorithms, including a graph-based recommender approach. It appears that user-based and memory-based methods perform better than model-based and factorization methods. Particularly, the graph-based recommender system outperforms the classical approaches on prediction accuracy of recommendations in terms of recall.FP7 EU LAC

    NEXT LEVEL: A COURSE RECOMMENDER SYSTEM BASED ON CAREER INTERESTS

    Skills-based hiring is a talent management approach that empowers employers to align recruitment around business results, rather than around credentials and title. It starts with employers identifying the particular skills required for a role, and then screening and evaluating candidates’ competencies against those requirements. With the recent rise in employers adopting skills-based hiring practices, it has become integral for students to take courses that improve their marketability and support their long-term career success. A 2017 survey of over 32,000 students at 43 randomly selected institutions found that only 34% of students believe they will graduate with the skills and knowledge required to be successful in the job market. Furthermore, the study found that while 96% of chief academic officers believe that their institutions are very or somewhat effective at preparing students for the workforce, only 11% of business leaders strongly agree [11]. An implication of the misalignment is that college graduates lack the skills that companies need and value. Fortunately, the rise of skills-based hiring provides an opportunity for universities and students to establish and follow clearer classroom-to-career pathways. To this end, this paper presents a course recommender system that aims to improve students’ career readiness by suggesting relevant skills and courses based on their unique career interests

    Semantic data mining and linked data for a recommender system in the AEC industry

    Even though it can provide design teams with valuable performance insights and enhance decision-making, monitored building data is rarely reused in an effective feedback loop from operation to design. Data mining allows users to obtain such insights from the large datasets generated throughout the building life cycle. Furthermore, semantic web technologies allow to formally represent the built environment and retrieve knowledge in response to domain-specific requirements. Both approaches have independently established themselves as powerful aids in decision-making. Combining them can enrich data mining processes with domain knowledge and facilitate knowledge discovery, representation and reuse. In this article, we look into the available data mining techniques and investigate to what extent they can be fused with semantic web technologies to provide recommendations to the end user in performance-oriented design. We demonstrate an initial implementation of a linked data-based system for generation of recommendations

    The Case for Graph-Based Recommendations

    Recommender systems have been intensively used to create personalised profiles, which enhance the user experience. In certain areas, such as e-learning, this approach is short-sighted, since each student masters each concept through different means. The progress from one concept to the next, or from one lesson to another, does not necessarily follow a fixed pattern. Given these settings, we can no longer use simple structures (vectors, strings, etc.) to represent each user's interactions with the system, because the sequence of events and their mapping to user's intentions, build up into more complex synergies. As a consequence, we propose a graph-based interpretation of the problem and identify the challenges behind (a) using graphs to model the users' journeys and hence as the input to the recommender system, and (b) producing recommendations in the form of graphs of actions to be taken

    Extracting Implicit Social Relation for Social Recommendation Techniques in User Rating Prediction

    Recommendation plays an increasingly important role in our daily lives. Recommender systems automatically suggest items to users that might be interesting for them. Recent studies illustrate that incorporating social trust in Matrix Factorization methods demonstrably improves accuracy of rating prediction. Such approaches mainly use the trust scores explicitly expressed by users. However, it is often challenging to have users provide explicit trust scores of each other. There exist quite a few works, which propose Trust Metrics to compute and predict trust scores between users based on their interactions. In this paper, first we present how social relation can be extracted from users' ratings to items by describing Hellinger distance between users in recommender systems. Then, we propose to incorporate the predicted trust scores into social matrix factorization models. By analyzing social relation extraction from three well-known real-world datasets, which both: trust and recommendation data available, we conclude that using the implicit social relation in social recommendation techniques has almost the same performance compared to the actual trust scores explicitly expressed by users. Hence, we build our method, called Hell-TrustSVD, on top of the state-of-the-art social recommendation technique to incorporate both the extracted implicit social relations and ratings given by users on the prediction of items for an active user. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to extend TrustSVD with extracted social trust information. The experimental results support the idea of employing implicit trust into matrix factorization whenever explicit trust is not available, can perform much better than the state-of-the-art approaches in user rating prediction

    Recommender System Using Collaborative Filtering Algorithm

    With the vast amount of data that the world has nowadays, institutions are looking for more and more accurate ways of using this data. Companies like Amazon use their huge amounts of data to give recommendations for users. Based on similarities among items, systems can give predictions for a new item’s rating. Recommender systems use the user, item, and ratings information to predict how other users will like a particular item. Recommender systems are now pervasive and seek to make profit out of customers or successfully meet their needs. However, to reach this goal, systems need to parse a lot of data and collect information, sometimes from different resources, and predict how the user will like the product or item. The computation power needed is considerable. Also, companies try to avoid flooding customer mailboxes with hundreds of products each morning, thus they are looking for one email or text that will make the customer look and act. The motivation to do the project comes from my eagerness to learn website design and get a deep understanding of recommender systems. Applying machine learning dynamically is one of the goals that I set for myself and I wanted to go beyond that and verify my result. Thus, I had to use a large dataset to test the algorithm and compare each technique in terms of error rate. My experience with applying collaborative filtering helps me to understand that finding a solution is not enough, but to strive for a fast and ultimate one. In my case, testing my algorithm in a large data set required me to refine the coding strategy of the algorithm many times to speed the process. In this project, I have designed a website that uses different techniques for recommendations. User-based, Item-based, and Model-based approaches of collaborative filtering are what I have used. Every technique has its way of predicting the user rating for a new item based on existing users’ data. To evaluate each method, I used Movie Lens, an external data set of users, items, and ratings, and calculated the error rate using Mean Absolute Error Rate (MAE) and Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE). Finally, each method has its strengths and weaknesses that relate to the domain in which I am applying these methods
