    Local sound field synthesis

    This thesis investigates the physical and perceptual properties of selected methods for (Local) Sound Field Synthesis ((L)SFS). In agreement with numerical sound field simulations, a specifically developed geometric model shows an increase of synthesis accuracy for LSFS compared to conventional SFS approaches. Different (L)SFS approaches are assessed within listening experiments, where LSFS performs at least as good as conventional methods for azimuthal sound source localisation and achieves a significant increase of timbral fidelity for distinct parametrisations.Die Arbeit untersucht die physikalischen und perzeptiven Eigenschaften von ausgewählten Verfahren zur (lokalen) Schallfeldsynthese ((L)SFS). Zusammen mit numerischen Simulationen zeigt ein eigens entwickeltes geometrisches Modell, dass LSFS gegenüber konventioneller SFS zu einer genauere Synthese führt. Die Verfahren werden in Hörversuchen evaluiert, wobei LSFS bei der horizontalen Lokalisierung von Schallquellen eine Genauigkeit erreicht, welche mindestens gleich der von konventionellen Methoden ist. Für bestimmte Parametrierung wird eine signifikant verbesserte klangliche Treue erreicht

    Sound field synthesis for line source array applications in large-scale sound reinforcement

    The thesis deals with optimized large-scale sound reinforcement using line source arrays. This is treated as a sound field synthesis problem. The synthesis of a virtual source via the line source array allows for audience adapted wavefront shaping. For practical array designs and setups this is affected by the deployed loudspeakers and their arrangement, its electronic control and spatial aliasing occurrence. The influence of these parameters is discussed with array signal processing revisiting the Wavefront Sculpture Technology and proposing Wave Field Synthesis as a suitable control method.Die Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit optimaler Beschallung großer Auditorien mit Line Source Arrays. Das Problem wird mit Schallfeldsynthese beschrieben. Die Synthese einer virtuellen Quelle mit einem Line Source Array ermöglicht eine für das Auditorium angepasste Wellenfront. In der Praxis wird dies beeinflusst von den verwendeten Lautsprechern, ihrer Anordnung, ihrer Ansteuerung und räumlichem Aliasing. Der Einfluss der Parameter wird mit Array-Signalverarbeitung diskutiert, wofür Wavefront Sculpture Technology aufgegriffen und Wellenfeldsynthese als Ansteuerungsmethode vorgeschlagen wird

    This thesis investigates the influence of the listening room on sound fields synthesised by Wave Field Synthesis. Methods are developed that allow for investigation of the spatial and timbral perception of Wave Field Synthesis in a reverberant environment using listening experiments based on simulation by binaural synthesis and room acoustical simulation. The results can serve as guidelines for the design of listening rooms for Wave Field Synthesis.Diese Dissertation untersucht den Einfluss des Wiedergaberaums auf Schallfelder, die mit Wellenfeldsynthese synthetisiert werden. Es werden Methoden zur Untersuchung von räumlicher und klangfarblicher Wahrnehmung von Wellenfeldsynthese in einer reflektierenden Umgebung mittels Hörversuchen entwickelt, die auf Simulation mit Binauralsynthese und raumakustischer Simulation beruhen.     The analysis and improvement of focused source reproduction with wave field synthesis

    This thesis presents a treatise on the rendering of focused sources using wave field synthesis (WFS). The thesis describes the fundamental theory of WFS and presents a thorough derivation of focused source driving functions including, monopoles, dipoles and pistonic sources. The principle characteristics of focused sources including, array truncation, spatial aliasing, pre-echo artefacts, colouration and amplitude errors are analysed in depth and a new spatial aliasing criterion is presented for focused sources. Additionally a new secondary source selection protocol is presented allowing for directed and symmetrically rendered sources. This thesis also describes how the low frequency rendering of focused sources is limited by the focusing ability of the loudspeaker array and thus derives a formula to predict the focusing limits and the corresponding focal shift that occurs at low frequencies and with short arrays. Subsequently a frequency dependent position correction is derived which increases the positional accuracy of the source. Other characteristics and issues with the rendering of focused sources are also described including the use of large arrays, rendering of moving focused sources, issues with multiple focused sources in the scene, the phase response, and the focal point size of focused sound field.The perceptual characteristics are also covered, with a review of the literature and a series of subjective tests into the localisation of focused sources. It is shown that an improvement in the localisation can be achieved by including the virtual first order images as point sources into the WFS rendering.Practical rendering of focused sources is generally done in compromised scenarios such as in non-anechoic, reverberant rooms which contain various scattering objects. These issues are also covered in this thesis with the aid of finite difference time domain models which allow the characterisation of room effects on the reproduced field, it is shown that room effects can actually even out spatial aliasing artefacts and therefore reduce the perception of colouration. Scattering objects can also be included in the model, thus the effects of scattering are also shown and a method of correcting for the scattering is suggested. Also covered is the rendering of focused sources using elevated arrays which can introduce position errors in the rendering

    A general superelement generation strategy for piecewise periodic media

    Structures composed of repetitions of multiple identical cells are common and have been the object of a large body of literature on waveguides, periodic media, and cyclic symmetry. Starting from a cell model, possibly with a large number of Degrees of Freedom both inside the cell and on its edges, the objective of this paper is to propose a Ritz-Galerkin reduction procedure retaining the standard second order model form and periodicity properties of the original model, while controlling accuracy in terms of model bandwidth and reproduction of the forced response to applied loads. The procedure is classically decomposed in two phases: subspace learning and basis generation. For the learning phase, Wave Finite Element (WFE) and periodic computations are presented as alternatives. The latter are then preferred for their easier control on the reduced model accuracy using classical modal synthesis and the simple choice of few target wavelengths. For the basis generation phase, constraints needed to generate a periodic superelement are defined and numerical procedures to generate a basis verifying those constraints are proposed. The validity of the reduction is demonstrated for the case of a cell with random elastic properties presenting bandgaps, local modes and wavemode crossing. Accurate predictions of modes and damped forced response are given for both the infinite and finite cases, using frequency and time simulations. The proposed analysis illustrates tracking of waveshapes, evaluation of significant waves by computation of the forced response in the frequency/wavenumber domain and interpretation of the relation between the infinite and finite forced responses. The case of a railway track with edges and transitions between multiple periodic zones is finally used to illustrate scalability issues

    Past, Present, and Future of Simultaneous Localization And Mapping: Towards the Robust-Perception Age

    Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM)consists in the concurrent construction of a model of the environment (the map), and the estimation of the state of the robot moving within it. The SLAM community has made astonishing progress over the last 30 years, enabling large-scale real-world applications, and witnessing a steady transition of this technology to industry. We survey the current state of SLAM. We start by presenting what is now the de-facto standard formulation for SLAM. We then review related work, covering a broad set of topics including robustness and scalability in long-term mapping, metric and semantic representations for mapping, theoretical performance guarantees, active SLAM and exploration, and other new frontiers. This paper simultaneously serves as a position paper and tutorial to those who are users of SLAM. By looking at the published research with a critical eye, we delineate open challenges and new research issues, that still deserve careful scientific investigation. The paper also contains the authors' take on two questions that often animate discussions during robotics conferences: Do robots need SLAM? and Is SLAM solved

    Efficient geometric sound propagation using visibility culling

    Simulating propagation of sound can improve the sense of realism in interactive applications such as video games and can lead to better designs in engineering applications such as architectural acoustics. In this thesis, we present geometric sound propagation techniques which are faster than prior methods and map well to upcoming parallel multi-core CPUs. We model specular reflections by using the image-source method and model finite-edge diffraction by using the well-known Biot-Tolstoy-Medwin (BTM) model. We accelerate the computation of specular reflections by applying novel visibility algorithms, FastV and AD-Frustum, which compute visibility from a point. We accelerate finite-edge diffraction modeling by applying a novel visibility algorithm which computes visibility from a region. Our visibility algorithms are based on frustum tracing and exploit recent advances in fast ray-hierarchy intersections, data-parallel computations, and scalable, multi-core algorithms. The AD-Frustum algorithm adapts its computation to the scene complexity and allows small errors in computing specular reflection paths for higher computational efficiency. FastV and our visibility algorithm from a region are general, object-space, conservative visibility algorithms that together significantly reduce the number of image sources compared to other techniques while preserving the same accuracy. Our geometric propagation algorithms are an order of magnitude faster than prior approaches for modeling specular reflections and two to ten times faster for modeling finite-edge diffraction. Our algorithms are interactive, scale almost linearly on multi-core CPUs, and can handle large, complex, and dynamic scenes. We also compare the accuracy of our sound propagation algorithms with other methods. Once sound propagation is performed, it is desirable to listen to the propagated sound in interactive and engineering applications. We can generate smooth, artifact-free output audio signals by applying efficient audio-processing algorithms. We also present the first efficient audio-processing algorithm for scenarios with simultaneously moving source and moving receiver (MS-MR) which incurs less than 25% overhead compared to static source and moving receiver (SS-MR) or moving source and static receiver (MS-SR) scenario

    In consideration of the remarkable intensity of research in the field of Virtual Acoustics, including different areas such as sound field analysis and synthesis, spatial audio technologies, and room acoustical modeling and auralization, it seemed about time to organize a second international symposium following the model of the first EAA Auralization Symposium initiated in 2009 by the acoustics group of the former Helsinki University of Technology (now Aalto University). Additionally, research communities which are focused on different approaches to sound field synthesis such as Ambisonics or Wave Field Synthesis have, in the meantime, moved closer together by using increasingly consistent theoretical frameworks. Finally, the quality of virtual acoustic environments is often considered as a result of all processing stages mentioned above, increasing the need for discussions on consistent strategies for evaluation. Thus, it seemed appropriate to integrate two of the most relevant communities, i.e. to combine the 2nd International Auralization Symposium with the 5th International Symposium on Ambisonics and Spherical Acoustics. The Symposia on Ambisonics, initiated in 2009 by the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics of the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, were traditionally dedicated to problems of spherical sound field analysis and re-synthesis, strategies for the exchange of ambisonics-encoded audio material, and – more than other conferences in this area – the artistic application of spatial audio systems. This publication contains the official conference proceedings. It includes 29 manuscripts which have passed a 3-stage peer-review with a board of about 70 international reviewers involved in the process. Each contribution has already been published individually with a unique DOI on the DepositOnce digital repository of TU Berlin. Some conference contributions have been recommended for resubmission to Acta Acustica united with Acustica, to possibly appear in a Special Issue on Virtual Acoustics in late 2014.
