    Antenna Selection And MIMO Capacity Estimation For Vehicular Communication Systems

    Vehicular communication is one of the promising prospects of wireless communication capable of addressing the issues related to road safety, providing the framework for smart or intelligent cars. To provide a reliable wireless link for vehicular communication extensive channel modeling and measurements are required. In this thesis a novel cost-effective implementation of vehicular channel capacity measuring system using off-the-shelf devices is proposed. Then using the proposed system, various channel measurements are performed. The measurement results are utilized to examine multi-antenna systems for vehicular communication. The challenge in developing an efficient network between cars is to understand the nature of random channels that changes with the location of antenna, surroundings and obstacles between the transmitting and receiving vehicles. In addition to measurements, in this thesis, the channel behavior has been studied through simulation. Wireless InSite from Remcom was used as a simulation tool to study different vehicular channels in environments with different structures to see the impact of obstacles and surroundings in the performance of the vehicular network. In particular, the behavior of different antenna locations on channel capacity of 2Ã2 Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems is investigated. Channel capacities that are obtained from simulation and measurements provide the information about the changing nature of the channel and outline the essential considerations while choosing the antenna positions on the transmitting or receiving vehicles

    Analysis of VANET Standard IEEE 1609.4 Mac Layer Multi-Channel Operations Using OMNeT++ and Veins

    VANETS is an ad hoc network in vehicles with wireless communication capability. The network utilizes a system to relay data from one vehicle to another vehicle or to a Road Side Unit (RSU). This communication is also known as Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) [31] and Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) [31]. The communication protocol for Wireless Access in Vehicular Environment (WAVE) [10], is the industry standard IEEE 802.11p to communicate between vehicles. This thesis examines the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer of this IEEE 1609.4 multi-channel communication protocol. In Dedicated Short Range Communications, the core of the WAVE protocol, there is an allocated spectrum in the frequency area of 5.9-GHz [20]. In the U.S, the allocated spectrum of 75 MHz was split into seven channels. A channel is defined as a frequency range of 10 MHz for a radio to tune into [28]. There is a control channel to relay safety messages and six service channels to relay non-safety messages, giving us two types of channels to choose from when in message transmission. Both the type and priority of the message are the factors considered. Many existing studies illustrate the impact of multi- channel and single-channel switching for non-safety and safety message transmissions. Most studies focus on optimizing the usability of the service channels. This thesis aims to determine the best use of the single radio in a vehicle i.e. to best utilize the Control Channel (CCH) and Service Channels (SCHs) in a Single Radio Multi-Channel (SR-MC) system [20]. We analyze the channel utilization, beacon transmission, and packet transmission of IEEE 1609.4 multi-channel operations in CCH and SCH. Some of the parameters used for comparison are the number of collisions, channel utilization, packet transmissions, and beacon transmissions. We investigate the scenario with density of n vehicles in a real world map, using safety (beacons) and non-safety (data) messages. The technologies used are Instant Veins 4.6, OMNET++ 5.2.1, SUMO 0.30, Debian GNU/Linux 9 (stretch) 64-bit, VMware Fusion (Professional Version 10.1.4) and an open street map from Northampton. The advantage of using OMNeT++ and Simulation Urban Mobility (SUMO) framework is the thorough implementation of IEEE 1609.4 DSRC/ WAVE and IEEE 802.11p in the framework [29]. Additionally, important feature of realistic traffic along with factual map can be generated with SUMO [21]. The contributions provided in this thesis include the integration of the testing framework Catch, randomizing the SCH, adding beacon transmission to the MAC layer, tracking of vehicle neighbors, tracking of collisions, and channel utilization. Plus an analysis on multi-channel switching. In our results we found that the CCH is highly overloaded both with beacon and channel switching management, which has a strong impact on the switching operation with a high number of collisions. Furthermore we also found that as the number of beacons generated increased, there was an increase in lost frames independent of the channel . Lastly there was little fluctuation in the number of collisions with a higher “n” of vehicles

    Supporting code mobility and dynamic reconfigurations over Wireless MAC Processor Prototype

    Mobile networks for Internet Access are a fundamental segment of Internet access net- works, where resource optimization are really critical because of the limited bandwidth availability. While traditionally resource optimizations have been focused on high effi- cient modulation and coding schemes, to be dynamically tuned according to the wireless channel and interference conditions, it has also been shown how medium access schemes can have a significant impact on the network performance according to the application and networking scenarios. This thesis work proposes an architectural solution for supporting Medium Access Con- trol (MAC) reconfigurations in terms of dynamic programming and code mobility. Since the MAC protocol is usually implemented in firmware/hardware (being constrained to very strict reaction times and to the rules of a specific standard), our solution is based on a different wireless card architecture, called Wireless MAC Processor (WMP), where standard protocols are replaced by standard programming interfaces. The control architecture developed in this thesis exploits this novel behavioral model of wireless cards for extending the network intelligence and enabling each node to be remotely reprogrammed by means a so called “MAC Program”, i.e. a software element that defines the description of a MAC protocol. This programmable protocol can be remotely injected and executed on running network devices allowing on-the-fly MAC reconfigurations. This work aim to obtain a formal description of the a software defined wireless network requirements and define a mechanism for a reliable MAC program code mobility throw the network elements, transparently to the upper-level and supervised by a global con- trol logic that optimizes the radio resource usage; it extends a single protocol paradigm implementation to a programmable protocol abstraction and redefines the overall wire- less network view with support for cognitive adaptation mechanisms.     High performance simulation and modelling of wireless vehicular ad hoc networks

    Vehicular communications occur when two or more vehicles come into range of one another, to share data over wireless media. The applications of this communication are far-reaching, from toll collection to collision avoidance. Due to the proliferation of wireless devices and their ubiquitous nature it is now possible to operate in an ad hoc manner between transmitting stations. Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET) are a special kind of network, that experience short link times and high levels of interference, but have the ability to present many driver information and safety solutions for the worlds roads. Computer simulation of VANET enables rapid-prototyping and intensive exploration of systems and protocol, using highly complex and computationally expensive models and programs. Experimentation with real vehicles would be time consuming and expensive, limiting the range of study that could be achieved and therefore reducing the accuracy of analytical solutions exposed through experimentation. An extensive corpus of work on networking, traffic modelling and parallel processing algorithm has been reviewed as part of this thesis, to isolate the current state-of-the-art and examine areas for novel research. In this thesis the value and importance of computer simulation for VANET is proposed, which explores the applications of a high-fidelity system when applied to real-world scenarios. The work is grounded on two main contributions: 1) that by using intervehicle communication and an advanced lane changing/merging algorithm the congestion that builds up around an obstruction on a highway can be alleviated and reduced more effectively than simple line-of-sight, even when only a proportion of the vehicles are radio equipped. 2) that the available parameter space, as large as it is, can be efficiently explored using a parallel algorithm with the NS-3 network simulation system. The large-scale simulation of VANET in highway scenarios can be used to discover universal trends and behaviours in the successful and timely delivery of data packets. The application of VANET research has a broad scope for use in modern vehicles and the optimisation of the transmission of data is highly relevant; a large number of parameters can be tuned in a networking device, but knowing which to tune and by how much is paramount to the operation of intelligent transport systems

    Efficient real-time video delivery in vehicular networks

    Tesis por compendio[EN] Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANET) are a special type of networks where the nodes involved in the communication are vehicles. VANETs are created when several vehicles connect among themselves without the use of any infrastructure. In certain situations the absence of infrastructure is an advantage, but it also creates several challenges that should be overcome. One of the main problems related with the absence of infrastructure is the lack of a coordinator that can ensure a certain level of quality in order to enable the correct transmission of video and audio. Video transmission can be extremely useful in this type of networks as it can be used for videoconferencing of by traffic authorities to monitor the scene of an accident. In this thesis we focused on real time video transmission, providing solutions for both unicast and multicast environments. Specifically, we built a real-world testbed scenario and made a comparison with simulation results to validate the behavior of the simulation models. Using that testbed we implemented and improved DACME, an admission control module able to provide Quality of Service (QoS) to unicast video transmissions. DACME proved to be a valid solution to obtain a certain level of QoS in multi-hop environments. Concerning multicast video transmission, we developed and simulated several flooding schemes, focusing specifically on VANET environments. In this scope, the main contribution of this thesis is the Automatic Copies Distance Based (ACDB) flooding scheme. Thanks to the use of the perceived vehicular density, ACDB is a zeroconf scheme able to achieve good video quality in both urban and highway environments, being specially effective in highway environments.[ES] Las redes vehiculares ad-hoc (VANET) son un tipo especial de redes en las que los nodos que participan de la comunicación son vehículos. Las VANETs se crean cuando diversos vehículos se conectan entre ellos sin el uso de ninguna infraestructura. En determinadas situaciones, la ausencia de infraestructura es una ventaja, pero también crea una gran cantidad de desafíos que se deben superar. Uno de los principales problemas relacionados con la ausencia de infraestructura, es la ausencia de un coordinador que pueda asegurar un determinado nivel de calidad, para poder asegurar la correcta transmisión de audio y vídeo. La transmisión de vídeo puede ser de extrema utilidad en este tipo de redes ya que puede ser empleada para videoconferencias o por las autoridades de tráfico para monitorizar el estado de un accidente. En esta tesis nos centramos en la transmisión de vídeo en tiempo real, proveyendo soluciones tanto para entornos unicast como multicast. En particular construimos un banco de pruebas real y comparamos los resultados obtenidos con resultados obtenidos en un entorno simulado para comprobar la fiabilidad de estos modelos. Usando el mismo banco de pruebas, implementamos y mejoramos DACME, un módulo de control de admisión capaz de proveer de calidad de servicio a transmisiones de vídeo unicast. DACME probó ser una solución válida para obtener ciertos niveles de calidad de servicio en entornos multisalto. En lo referente a la transmisión de vídeo multicast, desarrollamos y simulamos diversos esquemas de difusión diseñados específicamente para entornos VANET. En este campo, la principal contribución de esta tesis es el esquema de difusión "Automatic Copies Distance Based" (ACDB). Gracias al uso de la densidad vehicular percibida, ACDB es un esquema, que sin necesidad de configuración, permite alcanzar una buena calidad de vídeo tanto en entornos urbanos como en autopistas, siendo especialmente efectivo en este último entorno.[CA] Les xarxes vehiculars ad-hoc (VANET) son un tipus de xarxes especials a les que els diferents nodes que formen part d'una comunicació son vehicles. Les VANETs es formen quan diversos vehicles es connecten sense fer ús de cap infraestructura. A certes situacions l'absència d'una infraestructura suposa un avantatge, encara que també genera una gran quantitat de desafiaments que s'han de superar. U dels principals problemes relacionats amb l'absència d'infraestructura, és la manca d'un coordinador que puga garantir una correcta transmissió tant de video com d'àudio. La transmissió de video pot ser d'extrema utilitat a aquest tipus de xarxes, ja que es por emprar tant per a videoconferències com per part de les autoritats de trànsit per monitoritzar l'estat d'un accident. A aquesta tesi ens centrem en transmissió de video en temps real, proporcionant solucions tant a entorns unicast como a entorns multicast. Particularment, vam construir un banc de proves i obtinguérem resultats que comparàrem amb resultats obtinguts mitjançant simulació. D'aquesta manera validarem la fiabilitat dels resultats simulats. Fent ús del mateix banc de proves, vàrem implementar i millorar DACME, un mòdul de control d'admissió, capaç de proveir de qualitat de servici a transmissions de video unicast. DACME va provar ser una bona solució per obtindré un bon nivell de qualitat de servici en entorns de xarxes ad-hoc amb diversos salts. Si ens centrem a la transmissió de video multicast, vàrem implementar i simular diferents esquemes de difusió, específicament dissenyats per al seu ús a entorns VANET. La principal contribució d'aquesta tesi es l'esquema de difusió ACDB (Automatic Copies Distance Based). Fent ús de la densitat vehicular, ACDB es capaç d'obtindre una bona qualitat de video tant a ciutats com a vies interurbanes, sent a especialment efectiu a aquestes últimes.     Improving Vehicular ad hoc Network Protocols to Support Safety Applications in Realistic Scenarios

    La convergencia de las telecomunicaciones, la informática, la tecnología inalámbrica y los sistemas de transporte, va a facilitar que nuestras carreteras y autopistas nos sirvan tanto como plataforma de transporte, como de comunicaciones. Estos cambios van a revolucionar completamente cómo y cuándo vamos a acceder a determinados servicios, comunicarnos, viajar, entretenernos, y navegar, en un futuro muy cercano. Las redes vehiculares ad hoc (vehicular ad hoc networks VANETs) son redes de comunicación inalámbricas que no requieren de ningún tipo de infraestructura, y que permiten la comunicación y conducción cooperativa entre los vehículos en la carretera. Los vehículos actúan como nodos de comunicación y transmisores, formando redes dinámicas junto a otros vehículos cercanos en entornos urbanos y autopistas. Las características especiales de las redes vehiculares favorecen el desarrollo de servicios y aplicaciones atractivas y desafiantes. En esta tesis nos centramos en las aplicaciones relacionadas con la seguridad. Específicamente, desarrollamos y evaluamos un novedoso protocol que mejora la seguridad en las carreteras. Nuestra propuesta combina el uso de información de la localización de los vehículos y las características del mapa del escenario, para mejorar la diseminación de los mensajes de alerta. En las aplicaciones de seguridad para redes vehiculares, nuestra propuesta permite reducir el problema de las tormentas de difusión, mientras que se mantiene una alta efectividad en la diseminación de los mensajes hacia los vehículos cercanos. Debido a que desplegar y evaluar redes VANET supone un gran coste y una tarea dura, la metodología basada en la simulación se muestra como una metodología alternativa a la implementación real. A diferencia de otros trabajos previos, con el fin de evaluar nuestra propuesta en un entorno realista, en nuestras simulaciones tenemos muy en cuenta tanto la movilidad de los vehículos, como la transmisión de radio en entornos urbanos, especialmente cuando los edificios interfieren en la propagación de la señal de radio. Con este propósito, desarrollamos herramientas para la simulación de VANETs más precisas y realistas, mejorando tanto la modelización de la propagación de radio, como la movilidad de los vehículos, obteniendo una solución que permite integrar mapas reales en el entorno de simulación. Finalmente, evaluamos las prestaciones de nuestro protocolo propuesto haciendo uso de nuestra plataforma de simulación mejorada, evidenciando la importancia del uso de un entorno de simulación adecuado para conseguir resultados más realistas y poder obtener conclusiones más significativas.Martínez Domínguez, FJ.     Hybrid DES-based Vehicular Network Simulator with Multichannel Operations

    Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) is considered to be a viable technology for inter- vehicle communications for the purpose of improving road safety and efficiency. The En- hanced Distribution Channel Access (EDCA) mechanism and multichannel operations are introduced to ensure the Quality of Service (QoS). Therefore, it is necessary to create an accurate vehicular network simulator that guarantees the vehicular communications will work as described in the protocols. A comprehensive vehicular network simulator should consider the interaction between mobility models and network protocols. In this dissertation, a novel vehicular network simulation environment, VANET Toolbox, designed using discrete-event system (DES) is presented. The APP layer DES Module of the proposed simulator integrates vehicular mo- bility operations with message generation functions. The MAC layer DES module supports single channel and multichannel EDCA operations. The PHY layer DES module supports bit-level processing. Compared with packet-based simulator such as NS-3, the proposed PHY layer is more realistic and accurate. The EDCA scheme is evaluated and compared with the traditional Carrier-Sensing Mul- tiple Access (CSMA) scheme, with the simulations proving that data with different priorities can coexist in the same channel. The multichannel operation for the EDCA scheme is also analyzed in this dissertation. The multichannel switching operation and coordination may cause packet dropping or increased latency to the communication. The simulations show that with heavy network traffic, multichannel communication performs better than single channel communication. From the perspective of safety-related messages, the multichannel operation is able to isolate the interference from the non-safety messages in order to achieve a better packet delivery rate and latency. On the other hand, the non-safety messages can achieve high throughput with reasonable latency from multichannel communication under heavy load traffic scenario
