DelosDLMS: From the DELOS vision to the implementation of a future digital library management system
DelosDLMS is a novel digital library management system (DLMS) that has been developed as an integration effort within the DELOS Network of Excellence, a European Commission initiative funded under its fifth and sixth framework programs. In this paper, we describe DelosDLMS that takes into account the recommendations of several activities that were initiated by DELOS including the DELOS vision for digital libraries (DLs). A key aspect of DelosDLMS is its novel generic infrastructure that allows the generation of digital library systems out of a set of basic system services and DL services in a modular and extensible way. DL services like feature extraction, visualization, intelligent browsing, media-type-specific indexing, support for multilinguality, relevance feedback and many others can easily be incorporated or replaced. A further key aspect of DelosDLMS is its robustness against failures and its scalability for large collections and many parallel user requests. We discuss the current status of an effort to build DelosDLMS, a Digital Library Management System that integrates in various ways several components developed by DELOS members and showcases a great variety of functionality that is outlined as part of the DELOS visio
Adaptive Search Suggestions for Digital Libraries
Abstract. In this paper, an adaptive tool for providing suggestions during the information search process is presented. The tool uses case-based reasoning techniques to find the most useful suggestions for a given situation by comparing them to a case base of previous situations and adapting the solution. The tool can learn from user participation. A small, preliminary evaluation showed a high acceptance of the tool, even if improvements are still needed
Using āsearch transitionsā to study searchers investment of effort: experiences with client and server side logging
We are investigating the value of using the concept āsearch transitionā for studying effort invested in information search processes. In this paper we present findings from a comparative study of data collected from client and server side loggings. The purpose is to see what factors of effort can be captured from the two logging methods. The data stems from studies of searchers interaction with an XML information retrieval system. The searchers interaction was simultaneously logged by a screen capturing software and the IR systems logging facility. In order to identify the advantages and disadvantages we have compared the data gathered from a selection of sessions. We believe there is value in identifying the effort investment in a search process, both to evaluate the quality of the search system and to suggest areas of system intervention in the search process, if effort investment can be detected dynamicall
Strategies for Strengthening Green Economy on SMEs Development in Sidoarjo District
Purpose āThe purpose of the paper is to determine how the strategy of strengthening the green economy made by SMEs located in Sidoarjo District Design/methodology/approach āThis research is an interactive qualitative research, data collection is done from the primary source through direct interviews, validateion data by using this type of credibility, including triangulation of data, methods and theories Findings ā From this study showed that the strategies used by SMEs are using internal strategies and very dominant leader and pro-active performance of this strategy, so that the leader must be more innovate to succeed in their business activities Research limitations - This study only discusses the strengthening of the green economy, regardless of other factors (performance, quality of product, production costs, etc.) Practical implications āThere are several implications of this research is to implement green business economic activity is expected environmental conditions surrounding the activities are not disrupted, the feedback of the company is the company will smoothly conduct business without any complaints from the surrounding community Originality/value - This paper provides significant value because of the results and discussion based on the theory and a clear framework, in addition to how a company leader providing ideas and innovation to strengthen the green econom
Connecting with Families of Poverty Handbook
The purpose of this project is to create a handbook describing services available in the Sumner School District and researched based practices for elementary administrators and teachers to use when working with students and families of poverty. The McKinney-Vento Act in the United States protects families to ensure that all students have immediate access to school-linked services, including free breakfast and lunch, as well as transportation needs for getting to and from school. This handbook includes descriptions and contact information for local support organizations that administrators and teachers can additionally partner with to create supportive learning environments within their school and community to enhance student achievement in the Sumner and Bonney Lake communities of Washington
Overview of the INEX 2009 Interactive Track
In the paper we present the organization of the INEX 2009 interactive track. For the 2009 experiments the iTrack has gathered data on user search behavior in a collection consisting of book metadata taken from the online bookstore Amazon and the social cataloguing application LibraryThing. Thus the data are more structured than in previous yearsā experiments, consisting of traditional bibliographic metadata, user-generated tags and reviews and promotional texts and reviews from publishers and professional reviewers. Through monitoring searches based on three different task types the experiment aims at studying how users interact with highly structured data. We describe the methods used for data collection and the tasks performed by the participants. Some preliminary results of the interaction analysis are reported
Science Models as Value-Added Services for Scholarly Information Systems
The paper introduces scholarly Information Retrieval (IR) as a further
dimension that should be considered in the science modeling debate. The IR use
case is seen as a validation model of the adequacy of science models in
representing and predicting structure and dynamics in science. Particular
conceptualizations of scholarly activity and structures in science are used as
value-added search services to improve retrieval quality: a co-word model
depicting the cognitive structure of a field (used for query expansion), the
Bradford law of information concentration, and a model of co-authorship
networks (both used for re-ranking search results). An evaluation of the
retrieval quality when science model driven services are used turned out that
the models proposed actually provide beneficial effects to retrieval quality.
From an IR perspective, the models studied are therefore verified as expressive
conceptualizations of central phenomena in science. Thus, it could be shown
that the IR perspective can significantly contribute to a better understanding
of scholarly structures and activities.Comment: 26 pages, to appear in Scientometric
