    A Reinforcement Learning-driven Translation Model for Search-Oriented Conversational Systems

    Search-oriented conversational systems rely on information needs expressed in natural language (NL). We focus here on the understanding of NL expressions for building keyword-based queries. We propose a reinforcement-learning-driven translation model framework able to 1) learn the translation from NL expressions to queries in a supervised way, and, 2) to overcome the lack of large-scale dataset by framing the translation model as a word selection approach and injecting relevance feedback in the learning process.     Personal learning environment framework for a self-help Maqam-based search system

    In this era of technology and ICT, learners and tutors are moving towards self-learning and self-set goals. Personal Learning Environments (PLE) are systems that enable learners to manage their own learning process for attaining a specific goal. PLEs interconnect and integrate both formal and informal learning with self-regulated learning in tertiary education. Most of the PLEs are adopted at universities for learners to collaborate and share their ideas and content using different tools, communities and services. In this paper, we have created the architecture for a Personal Learning Environment specifically for the Self-help Maqam- based Search System built upon the seven maqams outlined in Al-Ghazali’s Minhajul Abidin. This self-help system assesses a person’s current state (maqam) of spirituality with an opportunity to learn ways of improving one’s spiritual state as defined in Minhajul Abidin. Thus, we developed a pedagogical framework by combining self-regulated learning and metacognitive knowledge first, so that the framework could be used to map the Personal Learning Environment (PLE) into the Self-help Maqam-based Search System mentioned above

    Combining Model-Based and Model-Free Updates for Trajectory-Centric Reinforcement Learning

    Reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms for real-world robotic applications need a data-efficient learning process and the ability to handle complex, unknown dynamical systems. These requirements are handled well by model-based and model-free RL approaches, respectively. In this work, we aim to combine the advantages of these two types of methods in a principled manner. By focusing on time-varying linear-Gaussian policies, we enable a model-based algorithm based on the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) that can be integrated into the model-free framework of path integral policy improvement (PI2). We can further combine our method with guided policy search (GPS) to train arbitrary parameterized policies such as deep neural networks. Our simulation and real-world experiments demonstrate that this method can solve challenging manipulation tasks with comparable or better performance than model-free methods while maintaining the sample efficiency of model-based methods.     Logic-based machine learning using a bounded hypothesis space: the lattice structure, refinement operators and a genetic algorithm approach

    Rich representation inherited from computational logic makes logic-based machine learning a competent method for application domains involving relational background knowledge and structured data. There is however a trade-off between the expressive power of the representation and the computational costs. Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) systems employ different kind of biases and heuristics to cope with the complexity of the search, which otherwise is intractable. Searching the hypothesis space bounded below by a bottom clause is the basis of several state-of-the-art ILP systems (e.g. Progol and Aleph). However, the structure of the search space and the properties of the refinement operators for theses systems have not been previously characterised. The contributions of this thesis can be summarised as follows: (i) characterising the properties, structure and morphisms of bounded subsumption lattice (ii) analysis of bounded refinement operators and stochastic refinement and (iii) implementation and empirical evaluation of stochastic search algorithms and in particular a Genetic Algorithm (GA) approach for bounded subsumption. In this thesis we introduce the concept of bounded subsumption and study the lattice and cover structure of bounded subsumption. We show the morphisms between the lattice of bounded subsumption, an atomic lattice and the lattice of partitions. We also show that ideal refinement operators exist for bounded subsumption and that, by contrast with general subsumption, efficient least and minimal generalisation operators can be designed for bounded subsumption. In this thesis we also show how refinement operators can be adapted for a stochastic search and give an analysis of refinement operators within the framework of stochastic refinement search. We also discuss genetic search for learning first-order clauses and describe a framework for genetic and stochastic refinement search for bounded subsumption. on. Finally, ILP algorithms and implementations which are based on this framework are described and evaluated.Open Acces

    Target Apps Selection: Towards a Unified Search Framework for Mobile Devices

    With the recent growth of conversational systems and intelligent assistants such as Apple Siri and Google Assistant, mobile devices are becoming even more pervasive in our lives. As a consequence, users are getting engaged with the mobile apps and frequently search for an information need in their apps. However, users cannot search within their apps through their intelligent assistants. This requires a unified mobile search framework that identifies the target app(s) for the user's query, submits the query to the app(s), and presents the results to the user. In this paper, we take the first step forward towards developing unified mobile search. In more detail, we introduce and study the task of target apps selection, which has various potential real-world applications. To this aim, we analyze attributes of search queries as well as user behaviors, while searching with different mobile apps. The analyses are done based on thousands of queries that we collected through crowdsourcing. We finally study the performance of state-of-the-art retrieval models for this task and propose two simple yet effective neural models that significantly outperform the baselines. Our neural approaches are based on learning high-dimensional representations for mobile apps. Our analyses and experiments suggest specific future directions in this research area.Comment: To appear at SIGIR 201
