Cloud Computing is a computingmodel that allows ubiquitous, convenient and on-demand access to a shared pool of highly configurable resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications and services). Denial-of-Service (DoS) and Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks are serious threats to the Cloud services’ availability due to numerous new vulnerabilities introduced by the nature of the Cloud, such as multi-tenancy and resource sharing. In this paper, new types of DoS and DDoS attacks in Cloud Computing are explored, especially the XML-DoS and HTTP-DoS attacks, and some possible detection and mitigation techniques are examined. This survey also provides an overview of the existing defense solutions and investigates the experiments and metrics that are usually designed and used to evaluate their performance, which is helpful for the future research in the domain

Intrusion detection and prevention of web service attacks for software as a service:Fuzzy association rules vs fuzzy associative patterns

Cloud computing inherits all the systems, networks as well asWeb Services’ security vulnerabilities, in particular for software as a service (SaaS), where business applications or services are provided over the Cloud as Web Service (WS). Hence, WS-based applications must be protected against loss of integrity, confidentiality and availability when they are deployed over to the Cloud environment. Many existing IDP systems address only attacks mostly occurring at PaaS and IaaS. In this paper, we present our fuzzy association rule-based (FAR) and fuzzy associative pattern-based (FAP) intrusion detection and prevention (IDP) systems in defending against WS attacks at the SaaS level. Our experimental results have validated the capabilities of these two IDP systems in terms of detection of known attacks and prediction of newvariant attacks with accuracy close to 100%. For each transaction transacted over the Cloud platform, detection, prevention or prediction is carried out in less than five seconds. For load and volume testing on the SaaS where the system is under stress (at a work load of 5000 concurrent users submitting normal, suspicious and malicious transactions over a time interval of 300 seconds), the FAR IDP system provides close to 95% service availability to normal transactions. Future work involves determining more quality attributes besides service availability, such as latency, throughput and accountability for a more trustworthy SaaS

Cloud computing is based on three principles which are distributed systems, grid computing and utility computing. It provides high performance infrastructure according usage of Virtualization to offer capabilities such as on demand self-service, pay per use, highly scalable, rapid elasticity and huge amount of resource pools through the Internet. Everything in cloud environment is used as a service. The cloud technology transformed the desktop computing into service based computing by getting advantages of using data centers and server cluster technology. Even with all advantages which could bring for both Cloud Providers and Cloud consumers still security is one of the most significant concerns in this environment such as Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability, Authenticity, and privacy. A lack of security in Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) as a fundamental delivery layer in cloud computing has an effective impact on the others delivery layers which are built on top of this layer. One of the most serious threats against the availability of cloud resources comes from Distributed Denial-of Service (DDoS) attack. This kind of attack is a large scalable and organized attack against availability of services and resources of the victim. This attack is launched by getting usage of sending tremendously large volumes of request to the target through the huge number of distributed compromised systems. The purpose of this study is to propose a new model for preventing disruption of available resources in terms of attack period. Based on previous research there is not a proper model that completely defense against DDoS attack, so the aim of this model is proposed to enhance the availability of cloud resources

Cloud computing is an ever-growing technology that leverages dynamic and versatile provision of computational resources and services. In spite of countless benefits that cloud service has to offer, there is always a security concern for new threats and risks. The paper provides a useful introduction to the rising security issues of Abuse of cloud service threat, which has no standard security measures to mitigate its risks and vulnerabilities. The threat can result an unbearable system gridlock and can make cloud services unavailable or even complete shutdown. The study has identified the potential challenges, as BotNet, BotCloud, Shared Technology Vulnerability and Malicious Insiders, from Abuse of cloud service threat. It has further described the attacking methods, impacts and the reasons due to the identified challenges. The study has evaluated the current available solutions and proposed mitigating security controls for the security risks and challenges from Abuse of cloud services threat

Intrusion Detection and Countermeasure of Virtual Cloud Systems - State of the Art and Current Challenges

Clouds are distributed Internet-based platforms that provide highly resilient and scalable environments to be used by enterprises in a multitude of ways. Cloud computing offers enterprises technology innovation that business leaders and IT infrastructure managers can choose to apply based on how and to what extent it helps them fulfil their business requirements. It is crucial that all technical consultants have a rigorous understanding of the ramifications of cloud computing as its influence is likely to spread the complete IT landscape. Security is one of the major concerns that is of practical interest to decision makers when they are making critical strategic operational decisions. Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are becoming more frequent and effective over the past few years, since the widely publicised DDoS attacks on the financial services industry that came to light in September and October 2012 and resurfaced in the past two years. In this paper, we introduce advanced cloud security technologies and practices as a series of concepts and technology architectures, from an industry-centric point of view. This is followed by classification of intrusion detection and prevention mechanisms that can be part of an overall strategy to help understand identify and mitigate potential DDoS attacks on business networks. The paper establishes solid coverage of security issues related to DDoS and virtualisation with a focus on structure, clarity, and well-defined blocks for mainstream cloud computing security solutions and platforms. In doing so, we aim to provide industry technologists, who may not be necessarily cloud or security experts, with an effective tool to help them understand the security implications associated with cloud adoption in their transition towards more knowledge-based systems

Enhancement of detection mechanisms for HTTP based DoS/DDoS attacks

    Get PDF
DoS (Denial of Service) and DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks are some of the vicious network layer attacks present in the world. More than 5.4 million DDoS attacks were reported in the first half of 2021. HTTP based Dos and DDoS attack, a type of DoS and DDoS attack, is a threat to the web applications as it brings damage to the application and the business. This paper sheds light on the current detection mechanisms of HTTP based DoS and DoS attacks and the limitations identified in these detection mechanisms. This paper focuses on the mitigation strategies for the HTTP based DoS and DDoS attacks. It is imperative to create efficient solutions to defend against such cyber-attacks and ensure proper network security in workplaces
