    Deep Space Network information system architecture study

    The purpose of this article is to describe an architecture for the Deep Space Network (DSN) information system in the years 2000-2010 and to provide guidelines for its evolution during the 1990s. The study scope is defined to be from the front-end areas at the antennas to the end users (spacecraft teams, principal investigators, archival storage systems, and non-NASA partners). The architectural vision provides guidance for major DSN implementation efforts during the next decade. A strong motivation for the study is an expected dramatic improvement in information-systems technologies, such as the following: computer processing, automation technology (including knowledge-based systems), networking and data transport, software and hardware engineering, and human-interface technology. The proposed Ground Information System has the following major features: unified architecture from the front-end area to the end user; open-systems standards to achieve interoperability; DSN production of level 0 data; delivery of level 0 data from the Deep Space Communications Complex, if desired; dedicated telemetry processors for each receiver; security against unauthorized access and errors; and highly automated monitor and control

The results of this study strongly accentuate this statement and should provide further incentive for immediate development of specific automtion technology as defined herein. Essential automation technology requirements were identified for future programs.     GPS interferometric attitude and heading determination: Initial flight test results

    Attitude and heading determination using GPS interferometry is a well-understood concept. However, efforts have been concentrated mainly in the development of robust algorithms and applications for low dynamic, rigid platforms (e.g., shipboard). This paper presents results of what is believed by the authors to be the first realtime flight test of a GPS attitude and heading determination system. The system is installed in Ohio University's Douglas DC-3 research aircraft. Signals from four antennas are processed by an Ashtech 3DF 24-channel GPS receiver. Data from the receiver are sent to a microcomputer for storage and further computations. Attitude and heading data are sent to a second computer for display on a software generated artificial horizon. Demonstration of this technique proves its candidacy for augmentation of aircraft state estimation for flight control and navigation as well as for numerous other applications

    Islanding Detection in Micro-grids using Sum of Voltage and Current Wavelet Coefficients Energy before the Main Circuit Breaker Side

    This paper presents wavelet based islanding detection in distributed generation (DG) interfaced to the microgrid. Also a new fast method is developed for islanding detection based on measuring the utility currents and voltages signals processed by discrete wavelet transform. These currents and voltages signals are measured before the main circuit breaker of microgrid network and their features extracted by discrete wavelet transform. These features are sum of wavelet coefficients energy and are used for distinguishing the islanding conditions from non-islanding ones. Because of changing in measuring point of currents and voltages signals from point of common coupling (PCC) in traditional methods to before the main circuit breaker in proposed method, this new method detects the islanding conditions faster than the other methods. The proposed method has been examined under various scenarios; including mains supply faults, various one, two, or three phases' grid faults, and changes of rate of produced energy on IEEE 1547 anti-islanding test system. The numerical studies show the feasibility and applicability of the proposed method with satisfactory results

    Development of a New Modeling Circuit for the Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) with GSM Communication

    This paper introduces the design and development of Intelligent Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) which is to be applied as an automation technique for operating and controlling the low voltage (LV) downstream of 415/240V to enhance reliability of power for the consumers. The design proposed based on Global System for Mobile (GSM) communication and this paper also presents as efficient design for distribution automation system and its implementation in remote/automatic monitoring and controlling of the relays (circuit breaker) by means of GSM Short Message Service (SMS) services, automatic decision making and continuous monitoring of distribution system components in real time. The system has been equipped with microcontroller as a main component which act as an RTU programmed using Microcontroller PRO compiler software. The RTU provides monitoring fault operation, controlling functions and data collection for analysis. RTU will initiate the transaction with the digital and output modules. The master of this system is RTU and the slaves are digital and output modules. RTU plays an important role in detecting fault and assigned to serve message immediately in the control room. This system involves the detection of fault connected to the microcontroller(PIC18F77A) and GSM modem. When the fault occurs, the sensor will send the signals to the PIC16F77A. The PIC is programmed to process the data and send the signals to the GSM modem. Once received the data, GSM will send the message to the control room operators or other authorized personnel to alert them on the current situation through cellular phone. The results are then communicated between hardware circuit and simulation circuit for the final conclusion with the properly functional algorithm

Advanced Modulation and Coding is one of three focused technology development projects within the branch's overall Processing and Switching Program. The program consists of industry contracts for developing proof-of-concept (POC) and demonstration model hardware, university grants for analyzing advanced techniques, and in-house integration and testing of performance verification and systems evaluation. The Advanced Modulation and Coding Project is broken into five elements: (1) bandwidth- and power-efficient modems; (2) high-speed codecs; (3) digital modems; (4) multichannel demodulators; and (5) very high-data-rate modems.
