Theodore A. Smedley and the Race Relations Law Reporter

Beginning in 1959, Ted Smedley served with personal distinction and national recognition as Director of the Race Relations Law Reporter and as Director and Editor of the successor publications,the Race Relations Law Survey and the Race Relations Law Index. Professor Smedley, who joined the Board of Editors of the Race Relations Law Reporter in the fall of 1957 as one of three Associate Directors, engaged in editorial activities in this dynamic and sensitive area over a seventeen-year period, an era marked by tremendous ferment and revolutionary change. The quality of his work is evident in the words published within the scope of his responsibilities. These brief comments will focus primarily on the period prior to his directorship

International Journal of Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics [Book Review]

In recent years, earthquake engineering has increasingly assumed an identity as an important specialty within the wider framework of the science of seismology, on the one hand, and the engineering science of structural dynamics, on the other. The subject first appeared formally on the international scene as recently as 1956, with the First International Conference on Earthquake Engineering which resulted later on in the formation of the International Association for Earthquake Engineering. Since that time the 1AEE has organized very successful conferences in Japan (1960), New Zealand (1965), Chile (1969), and is now planning for the Fifth World Conference in Italy (1973). The new Journal, which serves also as an official journal for the IAEE, is under the general editorship of Professor Ray W. Clough and the associate editorship of Professor Geoffrey B. Warburton. The very extensive experience and wide backgrounds of these distinguished editors will ensure the highest professional standards for the new publication. Eight members of the 21-man Advisory Editorial Board are members of the Seismological Society of America, including IAEE President George W. Housner, who, along with Editor Clough, is also serving as a member of the S.S.A. Board of Directors. It is intended that the new Journal should deal broadly with all phases of earthquake engineering, "from the seismological and geological factors which influence the recurrence interval and dynamic characteristics of the ground motion to be expected at a given site, to the establishment of building codes and standards which will provide adequate and economically sound protection for the life and property of the public . . . . The scope of the Journal will include papers on techniques of structural dynamic analysis, regardless of their field of application." The contents of the initial issue indicate many of the basic themes: Housner and Jennings on" The San Fernando, California, Earthquake"; Muto on "Dynamic Response of the KII Building to the San Fernando Earthquake"; Warburton and Higgs on "Vibration of Cylindrical Shells with Clamped Ends"; Penzien and Kaul on "Response of Offshore Towers to Strong Motion Earthquake"; Iyengar and Shinozuka on "Effects of Self-Weight and Vertical Acceleration on the Behavior of Tall Structures During Earthquakes"; Hisada, Ohmcri, and Bessho on "Earthquake-Design Considerations in Reinforced Concrete Columns"; and Johns, Britton, and Stoppard on" Increasing the Structural Damping of a Steel Chimney." Many readers of the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America are certain to find much material of interest in the new Journal, and the SSA Editorial Committee is happy to welcome this new publication with best wishes for a long and distinguished career

To fulfil its mission, IIOAB is now introducing a new open access, preer-reviewed, scientific international journal- the “IIOAB Letters” that will publish articles covering all aspects of biological sciences.  The journal is dedicated to students, who are our future, and will provide a platform to all scientific community to publish their articles.The journal is a collaborative effore of IIOAB and University Library Sysltem (ULS), Office of Scholarly Communication, Publishing and Web Services from University of Pittsburgh, USA. for puting their all valuable efforts in successfully launch the journal using Open Journal System (OJS).The journal will publish basic and applied research articles, invited review articles, interviews, letters, reports etc. This journal will also provide a global forum for ethical and business knowledge exchange through publishing papers from all over the world. Editor's welcome, PORTAL, Vol. 1, No. 1, January 2004

Welcome to the inaugural issue of PORTAL On behalf of the Executive Editorial Committee of PORTAL Journal of Multidisciplinary International Studies, it is a great pleasure to announce the virtual birth of this fully peer-reviewed journal under the auspices of UTSePress, the exciting new electronic publishing enterprise housed at the central library at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), Australia. PORTAL itself is edited by staff from the Institute for International Studies, a dynamic research and teaching centre at UTS. The launch of PORTAL's inaugural issue will take place simultaneously in Sydney, Australia, and Guadalajara, México, on January 28 (Sydney) / 27 (Guadalajara) 2004. The trans-Pacific axial enabling this twin launch is emblematic of the many axes of dialogue that, it is to be hoped, will characterize the content and reception of this and future issues of Portal. We are grateful to the many people at the Center for Social Sciences and Humanities at la Universidad de Guadalajara, México, for their provision of the technologies and tequila that will facilitate Portal's digital launch in a different space and timezone to its 'homebirth' in Sydney, Australia. As PORTAL's 'Focus and Scope' statement indicates, the journal is dedicated to publishing scholarship by practitioners of-and dissenters from-international, regional, area, migration, and ethnic studies. PORTAL is also committed to providing a space for cultural producers interested in the internationalization of cultures. With these aims in mind we have conceived PORTAL as a "multidisciplinary venture," to use Michel Chaouli's words. That is, PORTAL signifies "a place where researchers [and cultural producers] are exposed to different ways of posing questions and proffering answers, without creating out of their differing disciplinary languages a common theoretical or methodological pidgin" (2003, p. 57). Our hope is that scholars working in the humanities, social sciences, and potentially other disciplinary areas, will encounter in PORTAL a range of critical and creative scenarios about contemporary societies and cultures and their material and imaginative relation to processes of transnationalization, polyculturation, transmigration, globalization, and anti-globalization. Our use of scenario here is drawn from Néstor García Canclini, for whom the term designates "a place where a story is staged" (1995, p. 273). García Canclini's interest lies in comprehending the staging of stories at "the intercrossings on the borders between countries, in the fluid networks that interconnect towns, ethnic groups, and classes, … the popular and the cultured, the national and the foreign" (1995, p. 273). Such stories indicate some of the many possible international scenarios that PORTAL will stage in the future. A key to our ambitions for PORTAL is an editorial commitment to facilitating dialogue between international studies practitioners working anywhere in the world, and not simply or exclusively in the "North," "the West," or the "First World." This fundamental policy is reflected in our Editorial Board, with members drawn from respected academic and research institutions in many countries and continents. We would like to extend our warmest thanks to the many people across the globe who, site unseen, graciously agreed to support this publishing and intellectual endeavour by joining the Editorial Board and wholeheartedly endorsing the journal's editorial brief. PORTAL's commitment to fashioning a genuinely "international" studies rubric is also reflected in our willingness to accept critical and creative work in English as well as in a number of other languages: Bahasa Indonesia, Chinese, Croatian, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, and Serbian. We anticipate that this list will grow. Portal is also committed to the timely and constructive provision of feedback to submitted work. There will be two issues per year: one in January, the other in July. These editorial protocols make PORTAL a uniquely "international" publishing venture. Immense gratitude is due to the team at UTSePress for their dedication to, and faith in, this project. The purpose of the issue is to celebrate the groundbreaking nature of Professor Amar\u27s contemporary text by providing a collection of eleven scholarly commentaries in which some of the finest constitutional jurists in the United States react to the book. The commentators each offer a unique perspective on the dynamic text, utilizing legal, judicial, historical, philosophical, and even esoteric influences to analyze its contents. In an eloquent response to his academic peers, Continuing the Conversation, Professor Amar graciously addresses the individual commentaries by examining both praise and criticism alike, as proffered by each of the authors. The result is quite inviting to the reader; and the issue\u27s appeal is enhanced by the fact that the Law Review Editorial Board went to great lengths to preserve the particular writing styles of the individual authors

Long-term Follow up of Van Nes Rotationplasty for Congenital Proximal Focal Femoral Deficiency

Van Nes rotationplasty may be used for patients with congenital proximal focal femoral deficiency (PFFD). The lower limb is rotated to use the ankle and foot as a functional knee joint within a prosthesis. A small series of cases was investigated to determine the long-term outcome. At a mean of 21.5 years (11 to 45) after their rotationplasty, a total of 12 prosthetic patients completed the Short-Form (SF)-36, Faces Pain Scale-Revised, Harris hip score, Oswestry back pain score and Prosthetic Evaluation Questionnaires, as did 12 age- and gender-matched normal control participants. A physical examination and gait analysis, computerised dynamic posturography (CDP), and timed ‘Up & Go’ testing was also completed. Wilcoxon Signed rank test was used to compare each PFFD patient with a matched control participant with false discovery rate of 5%. There were no differences between the groups in overall health and well-being on the SF-36. Significant differences were seen in gait parameters in the PFFD group. Using CDP, the PFFD group had reduced symmetry in stance, and reduced end point and maximum excursions. Patients who had undergone Van Nes rotationplasty had a high level of function and quality of life at long-term follow-up, but presented with significant differences in gait and posture compared with the control group

9th International Conference on University Teaching and Innovation (CIDUI): Learning and teaching innovation impacts

The Organising Committee of the 9th International Conference on University Teaching and Innovation (CIDUI) wishes to thank the Editorial Board of the Journal of Technology and Science Education (JOTSE) for publishing this special issue. Since the year 2000, a new CIDUI conference has been held every two years. Today, it is a well-established event that provides an opportunity to share advances and innovation in the field of higher education. Like the previous editions, this one was also committed to fostering an especially participatory working dynamic and to promoting different points of view. The programmed debates were complemented by contributions from recognised specialists regarding the main topic of the conference: Learning and teaching innovation impacts.
