    Self-tuning diagnosis of routine alarms in rotating plant items

    Condition monitoring of rotating plant items in the energy generation industry is often achieved through examination of vibration signals. Engineers use this data to monitor the operation of turbine generators, gas circulators and other key plant assets. A common approach in such monitoring is to trigger an alarm when a vibration deviates from a predefined envelope of normal operation. This limit-based approach, however, generates a large volume of alarms not indicative of system damage or concern, such as operational transients that result in temporary increases in vibration. In the nuclear generation context, all alarms on rotating plant assets must be analysed and subjected to auditable review. The analysis of these alarms is often undertaken manually, on a case- by-case basis, but recent developments in monitoring research have brought forward the use of intelligent systems techniques to automate parts of this process. A knowledge- based system (KBS) has been developed to automatically analyse routine alarms, where the underlying cause can be attributed to observable operational changes. The initialisation and ongoing calibration of such systems, however, is a problem, as normal machine state is not uniform throughout asset life due to maintenance procedures and the wear of components. In addition, different machines will exhibit differing vibro- acoustic dynamics. This paper proposes a self-tuning knowledge-driven analysis system for routine alarm diagnosis across the key rotating plant items within the nuclear context common to the UK. Such a system has the ability to automatically infer the causes of routine alarms, and provide auditable reports to the engineering staff

    Online Bearing Remaining Useful Life Prediction Based on a Novel Degradation Indicator and Convolutional Neural Networks

    In industrial applications, nearly half the failures of motors are caused by the degradation of rolling element bearings (REBs). Therefore, accurately estimating the remaining useful life (RUL) for REBs are of crucial importance to ensure the reliability and safety of mechanical systems. To tackle this challenge, model-based approaches are often limited by the complexity of mathematical modeling. Conventional data-driven approaches, on the other hand, require massive efforts to extract the degradation features and construct health index. In this paper, a novel online data-driven framework is proposed to exploit the adoption of deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) in predicting the RUL of bearings. More concretely, the raw vibrations of training bearings are first processed using the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) and a novel nonlinear degradation indicator is constructed as the label for learning. The CNN is then employed to identify the hidden pattern between the extracted degradation indicator and the vibration of training bearings, which makes it possible to estimate the degradation of the test bearings automatically. Finally, testing bearings' RULs are predicted by using a Ļµ\epsilon-support vector regression model. The superior performance of the proposed RUL estimation framework, compared with the state-of-the-art approaches, is demonstrated through the experimental results. The generality of the proposed CNN model is also validated by transferring to bearings undergoing different operating conditions

    Blade fault diagnosis using artificial intelligence technique

    Blade fault diagnosis is conventionally based on interpretation of vibration spectrum and wavelet map. These methods are however found to be difficult and subjective as it requires visual interpretation of chart and wavelet color map. To overcome this problem, important features for blade fault diagnosis in a multi row of rotor blade system was selected to develop a novel blade fault diagnosis method based on artificial intelligence techniques to reduce subjective interpretation. Three artificial neural network models were developed to detect blade fault, classify the type of blade fault, and locate the blade fault location. An experimental study was conducted to simulate different types of blade faults involving blade rubbing, loss of blade part, and twisted blade. Vibration signals for all blade fault conditions were measured with a sampling rate of 5 kHz under steady-state conditions at a constant rotating speed. Continuous wavelet transform was used to analyse the vibration signals and its results were used subsequently for feature extraction. Statistical features were extracted from the continuous wavelet coefficients of the rotor operating frequency and its corresponding blade passing frequencies. The extracted statistical features were grouped into three different feature sets. In addition, two new feature sets were proposed: blade statistical curve area and blade statistical summation. The effectiveness of the five different feature sets for blade fault detection, classification, and localisation was investigated. Classification results showed that the statistical features extracted from the operating frequency to be more effective for blade fault detection, classification, and localisation than the statistical features from blade passing frequencies. Feature sets of blade statistical curve area was found to be more effective for blade fault classification, while feature sets of blade statistical summation were more effective for blade fault localisation. The application of feature selection using genetic algorithm showed good accuracy performance with fewer features achieved. The neural network developed for blade fault detection, classification, and localisation achieved accuracy of 100%, 98.15% and 83.47% respectively. With the developed blade fault diagnosis methods, manual interpretation solely dependent on knowledge and the experience of individuals can be reduced. The novel methods can therefore be used as an alternative method for blade fault diagnosis

    CONDITION-BASED RISK ASSESSMENT STRATEGY AND ITS HEALTH INDICATOR WITH APPLICATION TO PUMPS AND COMPRESSORS

    Large rotating machinery, such as centrifugal gas compressors and pumps, are widely applied as crucial components in the petrochemical industries. To enable in-time and effective maintenance of these machines, the concept of a health indicator is arousing great interest. A suitable health indicator indicates the overall health of the machinery and it is closely related to maintenance strategies and decision-making. It can be obtained either from near misses and incident data, or from real-time measured data. However, the existing health indicators have some limitations. On the one hand, the near misses and incident data may have been obtained from similar systems, reflecting population characteristics but not fully accounting for the individual features of the target system. On the other hand, the existing health indicators that use condition monitoring data, mainly focused on detecting incipient faults, and usually do not include financial cost factors when calculating the indicators. Therefore, there is the requirement to develop a single system "Health Indicator", that can show the health condition of a system in real-time, as well as the likely financial loss incurred when a fault is detected in the system, to assist operators on maintenance decision making. This project has developed such an integrated health indicator for rotating machinery. The integrated health indicator described in this thesis is extracted from a novel condition-based risk assessment strategy, which can be regarded as an integration of risk-based maintenance with improved conventional condition-based maintenance, with financial factors taken into account. The value of the health indicator is that it directly illustrates the risk to the system (or equipment), including likely financial loss, which makes it easier for operators to select the optimal time for maintenance or set alarm thresholds given the specific conditions in their companies or plants. This thesis provides a guide to set up an integrated maintenance model for large rotating machinery. It provides a useful reference for researchers working on condition-based fault detection and dynamic risk-based maintenance
