Large-Eddy Simulations of Flow and Heat Transfer in Complex Three-Dimensional Multilouvered Fins
The paper describes the computational procedure and
results from large-eddy simulations in a complex three-dimensional
louver geometry. The three-dimensionality in the
louver geometry occurs along the height of the fin, where the
angled louver transitions to the flat landing and joins with the
tube surface. The transition region is characterized by a swept
leading edge and decreasing flow area between louvers.
Preliminary results show a high energy compact vortex jet
forming in this region. The jet forms in the vicinity of the louver
junction with the flat landing and is drawn under the louver in
the transition region. Its interaction with the surface of the
louver produces vorticity of the opposite sign, which aids in
augmenting heat transfer on the louver surface. The top surface
of the louver in the transition region experiences large velocities
in the vicinity of the surface and exhibits higher heat transfer
coefficients than the bottom surface.Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Project 9
Astrophysical Supercomputing with GPUs: Critical Decisions for Early Adopters
General purpose computing on graphics processing units (GPGPU) is
dramatically changing the landscape of high performance computing in astronomy.
In this paper, we identify and investigate several key decision areas, with a
goal of simplyfing the early adoption of GPGPU in astronomy. We consider the
merits of OpenCL as an open standard in order to reduce risks associated with
coding in a native, vendor-specific programming environment, and present a GPU
programming philosophy based on using brute force solutions. We assert that
effective use of new GPU-based supercomputing facilities will require a change
in approach from astronomers. This will likely include improved programming
training, an increased need for software development best-practice through the
use of profiling and related optimisation tools, and a greater reliance on
third-party code libraries. As with any new technology, those willing to take
the risks, and make the investment of time and effort to become early adopters
of GPGPU in astronomy, stand to reap great benefits.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in PAS

Case-based reasoning in design: An apologia
Three positions are presented and defended: the process of generating solutions in problem solving is viewable as a design task; case-based reasoning is a strong method of problem solving; and a synergism exists between case-based reasoning and design problem solving
Towards the next generation of smart grids: semantic and holonic multi-agent management of distributed energy resources
The energy landscape is experiencing accelerating change; centralized energy systems are being decarbonized, and transitioning towards distributed energy systems, facilitated by advances in power system management and information and communication technologies. This paper elaborates on these generations of energy systems by critically reviewing relevant authoritative literature. This includes a discussion of modern concepts such as ‘smart grid’, ‘microgrid’, ‘virtual power plant’ and ‘multi-energy system’, and the relationships between them, as well as the trends towards distributed intelligence and interoperability. Each of these emerging urban energy concepts holds merit when applied within a centralized grid paradigm, but very little research applies these approaches within the emerging energy landscape typified by a high penetration of distributed energy resources, prosumers (consumers and producers), interoperability, and big data. Given the ongoing boom in these fields, this will lead to new challenges and opportunities as the status-quo of energy systems changes dramatically. We argue that a new generation of holonic energy systems is required to orchestrate the interplay between these dense, diverse and distributed energy components. The paper therefore contributes a description of holonic energy systems and the implicit research required towards sustainability and resilience in the imminent energy landscape. This promotes the systemic features of autonomy, belonging, connectivity, diversity and emergence, and balances global and local system objectives, through adaptive control topologies and demand responsive energy management. Future research avenues are identified to support this transition regarding interoperability, secure distributed control and a system of systems approach
Modelling iteration in engineering design
This paper examines design iteration and its modelling in the simulation of New Product Development (NPD) processes. A framework comprising six perspectives of iteration is proposed and it is argued that the importance of each perspective depends upon domain-specific factors. Key challenges of modelling iteration in process simulation frameworks such as the Design Structure Matrix are discussed, and we argue that no single model or framework can fully capture the iterative dynamics of an NPD process. To conclude, we propose that consideration of iteration and its representation could help identify the most appropriate modelling framework for a given process and modelling objective, thereby improving the fidelity of design process simulation models and increasing their utility
