Diffeomorphic density registration
In this book chapter we study the Riemannian Geometry of the density
registration problem: Given two densities (not necessarily probability
densities) defined on a smooth finite dimensional manifold find a
diffeomorphism which transforms one to the other. This problem is motivated by
the medical imaging application of tracking organ motion due to respiration in
Thoracic CT imaging where the fundamental physical property of conservation of
mass naturally leads to modeling CT attenuation as a density. We will study the
intimate link between the Riemannian metrics on the space of diffeomorphisms
and those on the space of densities. We finally develop novel computationally
efficient algorithms and demonstrate there applicability for registering RCCT
thoracic imaging.Comment: 23 pages, 6 Figures, Chapter for a Book on Medical Image Analysi
Geodesics on the manifold of multivariate generalized Gaussian distributions with an application to multicomponent texture discrimination
We consider the Rao geodesic distance (GD) based on the Fisher information as a similarity measure on the manifold of zero-mean multivariate generalized Gaussian distributions (MGGD). The MGGD is shown to be an adequate model for the heavy-tailed wavelet statistics in multicomponent images, such as color or multispectral images. We discuss the estimation of MGGD parameters using various methods. We apply the GD between MGGDs to color texture discrimination in several classification experiments, taking into account the correlation structure between the spectral bands in the wavelet domain. We compare the performance, both in terms of texture discrimination capability and computational load, of the GD and the Kullback-Leibler divergence (KLD). Likewise, both uni- and multivariate generalized Gaussian models are evaluated, characterized by a fixed or a variable shape parameter. The modeling of the interband correlation significantly improves classification efficiency, while the GD is shown to consistently outperform the KLD as a similarity measure
On the Limiting Behaviour of the Fundamental Geodesics of Information Geometry
The Information Geometry of extended exponential families has received much recent attention in a variety of important applications, notably categorical data analysis, graphical modelling and, more specifically, log-linear modelling. The essential geometry here comes from the closure of an exponential family in a high-dimensional simplex. In parallel, there has been a great deal of interest in the purely Fisher Riemannian structure of (extended) exponential families, most especially in the Markov chain Monte Carlo literature. These parallel developments raise challenges, addressed here, at a variety of levels: both theoretical and practical—relatedly, conceptual and methodological. Centrally to this endeavour, this paper makes explicit the underlying geometry of these two areas via an analysis of the limiting behaviour of the fundamental geodesics of Information Geometry, these being Amari’s (+1) and (0)-geodesics, respectively. Overall, a substantially more complete account of the Information Geometry of extended exponential families is provided than has hitherto been the case. We illustrate the importance and benefits of this novel formulation through applications
Diffeomorphic density matching by optimal information transport
We address the following problem: given two smooth densities on a manifold,
find an optimal diffeomorphism that transforms one density into the other. Our
framework builds on connections between the Fisher-Rao information metric on
the space of probability densities and right-invariant metrics on the
infinite-dimensional manifold of diffeomorphisms. This optimal information
transport, and modifications thereof, allows us to construct numerical
algorithms for density matching. The algorithms are inherently more efficient
than those based on optimal mass transport or diffeomorphic registration. Our
methods have applications in medical image registration, texture mapping, image
morphing, non-uniform random sampling, and mesh adaptivity. Some of these
applications are illustrated in examples.Comment: 35 page
Weighted Diffeomorphic Density Matching with Applications to Thoracic Image Registration
In this article we study the problem of thoracic image registration, in
particular the estimation of complex anatomical deformations associated with
the breathing cycle. Using the intimate link between the Riemannian geometry of
the space of diffeomorphisms and the space of densities, we develop an image
registration framework that incorporates both the fundamental law of
conservation of mass as well as spatially varying tissue compressibility
properties. By exploiting the geometrical structure, the resulting algorithm is
computationally efficient, yet widely general.Comment: Accepted in Proceedings of the 5th MICCAI workshop on Mathematical
