See the Difference: Direct Pre-Image Reconstruction and Pose Estimation by Differentiating HOG
The Histogram of Oriented Gradient (HOG) descriptor has led to many advances
in computer vision over the last decade and is still part of many state of the
art approaches. We realize that the associated feature computation is piecewise
differentiable and therefore many pipelines which build on HOG can be made
differentiable. This lends to advanced introspection as well as opportunities
for end-to-end optimization. We present our implementation of HOG based
on the auto-differentiation toolbox Chumpy and show applications to pre-image
visualization and pose estimation which extends the existing differentiable
renderer OpenDR pipeline. Both applications improve on the respective
state-of-the-art HOG approaches
Extracting curve-skeletons from digital shapes using occluding contours
Curve-skeletons are compact and semantically relevant shape descriptors, able to summarize both topology and pose of a wide range of digital objects. Most of the state-of-the-art algorithms for their computation rely on the type of geometric primitives used and sampling frequency. In this paper we introduce a formally sound and intuitive definition of curve-skeleton, then we propose a novel method for skeleton extraction that rely on the visual appearance of the shapes. To achieve this result we inspect the properties of occluding contours, showing how information about the symmetry axes of a 3D shape can be inferred by a small set of its planar projections. The proposed method is fast, insensitive to noise, capable of working with different shape representations, resolution insensitive and easy to implement
Multi-frame scene-flow estimation using a patch model and smooth motion prior
This paper addresses the problem of estimating the dense 3D motion of a scene over several frames using a set of calibrated cameras. Most current 3D motion estimation techniques are limited to estimating the motion over a single frame, unless a strong prior model of the scene (such as a skeleton) is introduced. Estimating the 3D motion of a general scene is difficult due to untextured surfaces, complex movements and occlusions. In this paper, we show that it is possible to track the surfaces of a scene over several frames, by introducing an effective prior on the scene motion. Experimental results show that the proposed method estimates the dense scene-flow over multiple frames, without the need for multiple-view reconstructions at every frame. Furthermore, the accuracy of the proposed method is demonstrated by comparing the estimated motion against a ground truth
