The Difference between Offline and Online Ties in Twitter
Social network sites (SNSs) not only strengthens an existing offline relationship, but also facilitates the formation of a new online relationship. As a result, there coexist the online ties between offline friends and online ties between two users who do not have any offline interactions and connection in SNSs. We investigate the nature of offline ties and its roles on tweet diffusion. We observe some interesting findings: (1) people can spread more efficiently (with fewer hops) their tweet on their offline friends’ local network; (2) offline ties play an essential intermediary role in facilitating pairwise tweet dissemination on each other’s local network; (3) As either in-degree centrality of a network or the number of community clusters increases, the information flow efficiency and edge-between centrality increase
Keeping up with the e-Joneses: Do online social networks raise social comparisons?
Online social networks such as Facebook disclose an unprecedented volume of
personal information amplifying the occasions for social comparisons. We test
the hypothesis that the use of social networking sites (SNS) increases people's
dissatisfaction with their income. After addressing endogeneity issues, our
results suggest that SNS users have a higher probability to compare their
achievements with those of others. This effect seems stronger than the one
exerted by TV watching, it is particularly strong for younger people, and it
affects men and women in a similar way.Comment: 25 pages, 5 figure
Evolution of the digital society reveals balance between viral and mass media influence
Online social networks (OSNs) enable researchers to study the social universe
at a previously unattainable scale. The worldwide impact and the necessity to
sustain their rapid growth emphasize the importance to unravel the laws
governing their evolution. We present a quantitative two-parameter model which
reproduces the entire topological evolution of a quasi-isolated OSN with
unprecedented precision from the birth of the network. This allows us to
precisely gauge the fundamental macroscopic and microscopic mechanisms
involved. Our findings suggest that the coupling between the real pre-existing
underlying social structure, a viral spreading mechanism, and mass media
influence govern the evolution of OSNs. The empirical validation of our model,
on a macroscopic scale, reveals that virality is four to five times stronger
than mass media influence and, on a microscopic scale, individuals have a
higher subscription probability if invited by weaker social contacts, in
agreement with the "strength of weak ties" paradigm
Influence of social networks on communication and culture
My bachelor thesis is focused on issues with social networking services and their influence on modern society. It addresses their history from the very first attempts to create a social networking service to the modern global ones. Later the thesis provides an explanation of the creation of a social networking service and its characteristic traits. Furthermore it outlines problems connected with the availability and overuse of social networking services that are subsequently influencing the human society. The thesis also analyzes the influence of social networks on language, interpersonal communication and cultural adaptation.
