    Ocean surface currents derived from Sentinel-1 SAR Doppler shift measurements

    Reliable information about ocean surface currents is crucial for operational oceanography, regulating weather development, and climate research (e.g., UN SDG 13). Upper-ocean currents are also key for monitoring life below water, including conservation of marine biodiversity at every trophic level (e.g., UN SDG 14). Locating upper ocean currents “with the right strength at the right place and time” is moreover critically needed to support the maritime transport sector, renewable marine energy, and maritime safety operations as well as for monitoring and tracking of marine pollution. In spite of this, upper ocean currents and their variability are mostly indirectly estimated and often without quantitative knowledge of uncertainties. In this thesis, Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) based Doppler frequency shift observations are examined for the retrievals of ocean surface current velocity in the radar line-of-sight direction. In the first study (Paper 1), Sentinel-1 A/B Interferometric Wide (IW) data acquired along the northern part of the Norwegian coastal zone from October-November 2017 at a spatial resolution of 1.5 km are compared with independent in-situ data, ocean model fields, and coastal High-Frequency Radar observations. Although only a limited dataset was available, the findings and results reveal that the strength of the meandering Norwegian Coastal Current derived from the SAR Doppler frequency shift observations are consistent with observations. However, limitations are encountered due to insufficient calibration and lack of ability to properly partition the geophysical signals into wave and current contributions. A novel approach for calibration of the attitude contribution to the Sentinel-1B Wave Mode (WV) Doppler frequency shift emerged for a test period in December 2017 - January 2018. Building on this calibrated dataset, an empirical model function (CDOP3S) for prediction of the sea state-induced contribution to the Doppler shift observations is developed for the global open ocean in Paper 2. The assessment against collocated surface drifter data are promising and suggest that the Sentinel-1B WV acquisitions can be used to study the equatorial ocean surface currents at a monthly timescale with a 20 km spatial resolution. The calibrated dataset combined with the new geophysical model function developed in Paper 2 also allowed for the study (Paper 3) of ocean surface current retrievals from the high-resolution Sentinel-1B IW swath data acquired along the coastal zone on northern Norway. In this case, the geophysical model function had to be trained and adjusted for fetch limited coastal sea state conditions. The results demonstrate that the Sentinel-1B SAR-derived ocean surface currents significantly improved, compared to the findings reported in Paper 1. Although the thesis builds on a limited period of observations, constrained by the availability of experimental attitude calibration, the results are all in all promising. Reprocessing of the full Sentinel-1 A/B SAR Doppler shift dataset using the novel attitude bias correction is therefore strongly recommended for further improvement of the empirical model function. Regular use of the Sentinel-1 A/B SAR for ocean surface current monitoring would thus be feasible, leading to advances in studies of upper ocean dynamics in support to the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) program and the United Nations (UN) Decade of Ocean Sciences.Doktorgradsavhandlin

    Improving surface current resolution using direction finding algorithms for multiantenna high-frequency radars

This work uses a hybrid system, having elements of both phased arrays and direction finding radars, to improve the azimuthal resolution of HF radars. Data from two radars deployed along the U.S. East Coast and configured as 8-antenna grid arrays were used to evaluate potential direction finding and signal, or emitter, detection methods. Direction finding methods such as maximum likelihood estimation generally performed better than the well-known multiple signal classification (MUSIC) method given identical emitter detection methods. However, accurately estimating the number of emitters present in HF radar observations is a challenge. As MUSIC’s direction-of-arrival (DOA) function permits simple empirical tests that dramatically aid the detection process, MUSIC was found to be the superior method in this study. The 8-antenna arrays were able to provide more accurate estimates of MUSIC’s noise subspace than typical 3-antenna systems, eliminating the need for a series of empirical parameters to control MUSIC’s performance. For each technique, the measurement principle is briefly recalled, the degree of development is outlined, and trends are prospected. The complementarity of such techniques is also highlighted, and the need for further integration in local and global networks is stressed

    Eulerian and Lagrangian correspondence of high-frequency radar and surface drifter data : effects of radar resolution and flow components

The definitive version was published in Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology 31 (2014): 945–966, doi:10.1175/JTECH-D-13-00146.1.This study investigated the correspondence between the near-surface drifters from a mass drifter deployment near Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, and the surface current observations from a network of three high-resolution, high-frequency radars to understand the effects of the radar temporal and spatial resolution on the resulting Eulerian current velocities and Lagrangian trajectories and their predictability. The radar-based surface currents were found to be unbiased in direction but biased in magnitude with respect to drifter velocities. The radar systematically underestimated velocities by approximately 2 cm s−1 due to the smoothing effects of spatial and temporal averaging. The radar accuracy, quantified by the domain-averaged rms difference between instantaneous radar and drifter velocities, was found to be about 3.8 cm s−1. A Lagrangian comparison between the real and simulated drifters resulted in the separation distances of roughly 1 km over the course of 10 h, or an equivalent separation speed of approximately 2.8 cm s−1. The effects of the temporal and spatial radar resolution were examined by degrading the radar fields to coarser resolutions, revealing the existence of critical scales (1.5–2 km and 3 h) beyond which the ability of the radar to reproduce drifter trajectories decreased more rapidly. Finally, the importance of the different flow components present during the experiment—mean, tidal, locally wind-driven currents, and the residual velocities—was analyzed, finding that, during the study period, a combination of tidal, locally wind-driven, and mean currents were insufficient to reliably reproduce, with minimal degradation, the trajectories of real drifters.     Wave Measurements Using Ship Mounted Sensors as part of the One Ocean Expedition

    This thesis examines the design and post-processing aspects of wave measurements from ship mounted sensors. The wave measurements exhibit accuracy comparable to wave measuring drifters while offering enhanced spatial coverage and durability. The ship mounted approach is suitable for real-time broadcasting during research expeditions and conventional shipping routes, as well as for the validation of satellite observations and wave models. The system presented here was deployed on the Norwegian tall ship Statsraad Lehmkuhl during a 22-month circumnavigation of the globe as part of the One Ocean Expedition. The wave measurement system utilizes downward facing altimeter probes to capture sea surface elevation, while ship motion is compensated by inertial motion units. The post- processing of the measurements developed by Knoblauch, 2022 has been corrected, updated, and refined. With the software update, the significant wave height measurements exhibit a root mean square deviation of 0.36m and a correlation coefficient of 0.96 compared to satellite altimetry. Compared to a third-generation wave model, the root mean squared deviation is 0.53m, and the correlation coefficient is 0.93. The system overestimates the highest waves, particularly during a major winter storm. Regarding peak period measurements, satisfactory results are obtained when waves oppose the sensor and ship speeds remain below 3m/s or when the ship is stationary. Under these circumstances, the root mean squared deviation ranges from 1.76s to 2.04s, while the correlation coefficients range from 0.77 to 0.80, compared to the wave model. However, as ship speeds increase, the quality of peak period measurements deteriorates precipitously, regardless of Doppler shift corrections. The challenges associated with the Doppler shift are suggested to be improved by complementing directional wave- and current measurements from a navigation X-band ship radar.Masteroppgave i meteorologi og oseanografiGEOF399MAMN-GEO

    Comparison of dense optical flow and PIV techniques for mapping surface current flow in tidal stream energy sites

    Marine renewable energy site and resource characterisation, in particular tidal stream energy, require detailed flow measurements which often rely on high-cost in situ instrumentation which is limited in spatial extent. We hypothesise uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAV) offer a low-cost and low-risk data collection method for tidal stream environments, as recently techniques have been developed to derive flow from optical videography. This may benefit tidal and floating renewable energy developments, providing additional insight into flow conditions and complement traditional instrumentation. Benefits to existing data collection methods include capturing flow over a large spatial extent synchronously, which could be used to analyse flow around structures or for site characterisation; however, uncertainty and method application to tidal energy sites is unclear. Here, two algorithms are tested: large-scale particle image velocimetry using PIVlab and dense optical flow. The methods are applied on video data collected at two tidal stream energy sites (Pentland Firth, Scotland, and Ramsey Sound, Wales) for a range of flow and environmental conditions. Although average validation measures were similar (~ 20–30% error), we recommend PIVlab processed velocity data at tidal energy sites because we find bias (underprediction) in optical flow for higher velocities (> 1 m/s)

    Measuring ocean surface velocities with the KuROS and KaRADOC airborne near-nadir Doppler radars: a multi-scale analysis in preparation of the SKIM mission, Submitted to Ocean SCience, July 2019

    Surface currents are poorly known over most of the oceans. Satellite-borne Doppler Waves and Current Scatterom-eters (DWCS) can be used to fill this observation gap. The Sea surface KInematics Multiscale (SKIM) proposal, is the first satellite concept built on a DWCS design at near-nadir angles, and now one of the two candidates to become the 9th mission of the European Space Agency Earth Explorer program. As part of the detailed design and feasibility studies (phase A) funded by ESA, airborne measurements were carried out with both a Ku-Band and a Ka-Band Doppler radars looking at the sea surface at 5 near nadir-incidence in a real-aperture mode, i.e. in a geometry and mode similar to that of SKIM. The airborne radar KuROS was deployed to provide simultaneous measurements of the radar backscatter and Doppler velocity, in a side-looking configuration , with an horizontal resolution of about 5 to 10 m along the line of sight and integrated in the perpendicular direction over the real-aperture 3-dB footprint diameter (about 580 m). The KaRADOC system has a much narrower beam, with a circular footprint only 45 m in diameter. 10 The experiment took place in November 2018 off the French Atlantic coast, with sea states representative of the open ocean and a well known tide-dominated current regime. The data set is analyzed to explore the contribution of non-geophysical velocities to the measurement and how the geophysical part of the measured velocity combines wave-resolved and wave-averaged scales. We find that the measured Doppler velocity contains a characteristic wave phase speed, called here C 0 that is analogous to the Bragg phase speed of coastal High Frequency radars that use a grazing measurement geometry, with little 15 variations ∆ C associated to changes in sea state. The Ka-band measurements at an incidence of 12 • are 10% lower than the theoretical estimate C 0 2.4 m/s for typical oceanic conditions defined by a wind speed of 7 m/s and a significant wave height of 2 m. For Ku-band the measured data is 1 https://doi. 30% lower than the theoretical estimate 2.8 m/s. ∆ C is of the order of 0.2 m/s for a 1 m change in wave height, and cannot be confused with a 1 m/s change in tidal current. The actual measurement of the current velocity from an aircraft at 4 to 18 • incidence angle is, however, made difficult by uncertainties on the measurement geometry, which are much reduced in satellite measurements
