Analyzing the export flow from Texas to Mexico
From 1997 to 2008, Texas shipped 40 percent of its manufacturing exports to Mexico. This puts Texas-Mexico among the largest state-country trading relationships. But this share has been declining recently. A gravity equation cannot account for either of these facts, even though Texas and Mexico share a border. This positive contiguity effect is not unique in state export data. I study the features of the Texas-Mexico relationship to try to account for the size of the export flow and the recent decline in share. Data limitations prevent a full accounting, but the most likely feature is the changing source of maquiladora inputs from the United States to AsiaTexas ; Mexico ; Maquiladora ; Mexican-American Border Region - Economic conditions ; International trade ; Exports
Foreign and Domestic Firms in Colombia:Exports, Imports and External Debt
This is the third of three papers investigating the differences between foreign and domestic firms in Colombia. The study uses a dataset containing the 2003 balance sheets and income statements for some 7,001 firms obtained from the Superintendencia de Sociedades. This dataset is crossed with a database of the Banco de la República, containing data on exports, imports and external debt. Foreign firms are shown to both export and import more than their domestic counterparts. Foreign firms are also shown to hold much more external debt than their domestic counterparts. The paper also studies different business sectors, and it is shown that there are large variations between different sectors in terms of exports, imports and external debt.
Germany Is Well Positioned for International Trade with Research-Intensive Goods
Germany is the world's biggest gross and net exporter of research-intensive goods, even ahead of the US and Japan. Per capita Germany also has the largest export surplus for research-intensive goods with around USD 3,900. Furthermore, Germany increasingly benefits as an importer - and thus as a user of technologies - from the international division of work. However, Germany's comparative advantages for research-intensive goods have declined in comparison to the middle of the 1990s. This is not due to a change in export specializations but rather to the tremendous increase in imports; this is reflected above all in the medium and low price segments where emerging markets have been catching up in research-intensive goods. After the financial market crisis had its impact on the real economy, it is now even more important to strengthen the innovative capabilities of German companies. The most important prerequisite of ensuring this is being equipped with R&D and human capital.International trade, Country and industry studies of trade, Industrialization, Manufacturing and service industries, Choice of technology
eProfile v3.2 guidance manual
"Context: The eProfile is an electronic data collection tool that has been funded by the
Department for Education (DfE) and developed in partnership with QCDA.
It provides an electronic means of recording the final judgements made of a child's attainment
at the end of the EYFS. It offers an invaluable source of information to support transition and
enables year 1 teachers to plan an effective, responsive and appropriate curriculum that will
meet all children's needs and next learning steps.
The eProfile will assist practitioners and headteachers in building a picture of a child’s
attainment during the reception year across all six areas of learning and development. It gives
vital information to inform the school’s self evaluation process and can also be used to
evaluate provision." - Page 3
Updating the Input Output based Macmod functions
The present paper reports on a statistical effort undertaken for the Macmod project. It reports on the revision and updating of the Tanzanian Input-Output table for 1992. These IO activities are undertaken in order to furnish the Macmod model with production and consumption functions that are up-to-date, commodity specific with respect to inputs, and explicit in respect of the input origin.Input Output tables Statistical analysis Tanzania
Spillovers from Multinationals to Heterogeneous Domestic Firms: Evidence from Hungary
Firms cluster their economic activities to exploit technological and informational spillovers from other firms. Spillovers through the entry of multinational firms can be particularly beneficial to domestic firms because of their technological superiority. Yet, the importance of foreign firm's spillovers might depend on two key features of domestic firms: their productivity level and its export status. In line with theories and empirical evidence on the absorptive capacity of firms, we argue on the basis of an empirical analysis of Hungarian firms that larger and more productive firms are more able to reap spillovers from multinationals firms than smaller firms. The export status, in contrast, is of minor importance.FDI, multinationals, productivity, spillover, regions
