Combinatorics of bicubic maps with hard particles
We present a purely combinatorial solution of the problem of enumerating
planar bicubic maps with hard particles. This is done by use of a bijection
with a particular class of blossom trees with particles, obtained by an
appropriate cutting of the maps. Although these trees have no simple local
characterization, we prove that their enumeration may be performed upon
introducing a larger class of "admissible" trees with possibly doubly-occupied
edges and summing them with appropriate signed weights. The proof relies on an
extension of the cutting procedure allowing for the presence on the maps of
special non-sectile edges. The admissible trees are characterized by simple
local rules, allowing eventually for an exact enumeration of planar bicubic
maps with hard particles. We also discuss generalizations for maps with
particles subject to more general exclusion rules and show how to re-derive the
enumeration of quartic maps with Ising spins in the present framework of
admissible trees. We finally comment on a possible interpretation in terms of
branching processes.Comment: 41 pages, 19 figures, tex, lanlmac, hyperbasics, epsf. Introduction

Flow polytopes of signed graphs and the Kostant partition function
We establish the relationship between volumes of flow polytopes associated to
signed graphs and the Kostant partition function. A special case of this
relationship, namely, when the graphs are signless, has been studied in detail
by Baldoni and Vergne using techniques of residues. In contrast with their
approach, we provide entirely combinatorial proofs inspired by the work of
Postnikov and Stanley on flow polytopes. As a fascinating special family of
flow polytopes, we study the Chan-Robbins-Yuen polytopes. Motivated by the
beautiful volume formula for the type version,
where is the th Catalan number, we introduce type and
Chan-Robbins-Yuen polytopes along with intriguing conjectures
pertaining to their properties.Comment: 29 pages, 13 figure
On perturbations of highly connected dyadic matroids
Geelen, Gerards, and Whittle [3] announced the following result: let be a prime power, and let be a proper minor-closed class of
-representable matroids, which does not contain
for sufficiently high . There exist integers
such that every vertically -connected matroid in is a
rank- perturbation of a frame matroid or the dual of a frame matroid
over . They further announced a characterization of the
perturbations through the introduction of subfield templates and frame
templates.
We show a family of dyadic matroids that form a counterexample to this
result. We offer several weaker conjectures to replace the ones in [3], discuss
consequences for some published papers, and discuss the impact of these new
conjectures on the structure of frame templates.Comment: Version 3 has a new title and a few other minor corrections; 38
pages, including a 6-page Jupyter notebook that contains SageMath code and
that is also available in the ancillary file
A survey on algorithmic aspects of modular decomposition
The modular decomposition is a technique that applies but is not restricted
to graphs. The notion of module naturally appears in the proofs of many graph
theoretical theorems. Computing the modular decomposition tree is an important
preprocessing step to solve a large number of combinatorial optimization
problems. Since the first polynomial time algorithm in the early 70's, the
algorithmic of the modular decomposition has known an important development.
