    Network Design Problems with Bounded Distances via Shallow-Light Steiner Trees

    In a directed graph GG with non-correlated edge lengths and costs, the \emph{network design problem with bounded distances} asks for a cost-minimal spanning subgraph subject to a length bound for all node pairs. We give a bi-criteria (2+ε,O(n0.5+ε))(2+\varepsilon,O(n^{0.5+\varepsilon}))-approximation for this problem. This improves on the currently best known linear approximation bound, at the cost of violating the distance bound by a factor of at most~2+ε2+\varepsilon. In the course of proving this result, the related problem of \emph{directed shallow-light Steiner trees} arises as a subproblem. In the context of directed graphs, approximations to this problem have been elusive. We present the first non-trivial result by proposing a (1+ε,O(Rε))(1+\varepsilon,O(|R|^{\varepsilon}))-ap\-proxi\-ma\-tion, where RR are the terminals. Finally, we show how to apply our results to obtain an (α+ε,O(n0.5+ε))(\alpha+\varepsilon,O(n^{0.5+\varepsilon}))-approximation for \emph{light-weight directed α\alpha-spanners}. For this, no non-trivial approximation algorithm has been known before. All running times depends on nn and ε\varepsilon and are polynomial in nn for any fixed ε>0\varepsilon>0

    The Homogeneous Broadcast Problem in Narrow and Wide Strips

    Let PP be a set of nodes in a wireless network, where each node is modeled as a point in the plane, and let sPs\in P be a given source node. Each node pp can transmit information to all other nodes within unit distance, provided pp is activated. The (homogeneous) broadcast problem is to activate a minimum number of nodes such that in the resulting directed communication graph, the source ss can reach any other node. We study the complexity of the regular and the hop-bounded version of the problem (in the latter, ss must be able to reach every node within a specified number of hops), with the restriction that all points lie inside a strip of width ww.     A Coloring Algorithm for Disambiguating Graph and Map Drawings

    Drawings of non-planar graphs always result in edge crossings. When there are many edges crossing at small angles, it is often difficult to follow these edges, because of the multiple visual paths resulted from the crossings that slow down eye movements. In this paper we propose an algorithm that disambiguates the edges with automatic selection of distinctive colors. Our proposed algorithm computes a near optimal color assignment of a dual collision graph, using a novel branch-and-bound procedure applied to a space decomposition of the color gamut. We give examples demonstrating the effectiveness of this approach in clarifying drawings of real world graphs and maps

    Abstraction in directed model checking

    Abstraction is one of the most important issues to cope with large and infinite state spaces in model checking and to reduce the verification efforts. The abstract system is smaller than the original one and if the abstract system satisfies a correctness specification, so does the concrete one. However, abstractions may introduce a behavior violating the specification that is not present in the original system. This paper bypasses this problem by proposing the combination of abstraction with heuristic search to improve error detection. The abstract system is explored in order to create a database that stores the exact distances from abstract states to the set of abstract error states. To check, whether or not the abstract behavior is present in the original system, effcient exploration algorithms exploit the database as a guidance

    Centroidal bases in graphs

    We introduce the notion of a centroidal locating set of a graph GG, that is, a set LL of vertices such that all vertices in GG are uniquely determined by their relative distances to the vertices of LL. A centroidal locating set of GG of minimum size is called a centroidal basis, and its size is the centroidal dimension CD(G)CD(G). This notion, which is related to previous concepts, gives a new way of identifying the vertices of a graph. The centroidal dimension of a graph GG is lower- and upper-bounded by the metric dimension and twice the location-domination number of GG, respectively. The latter two parameters are standard and well-studied notions in the field of graph identification. We show that for any graph GG with nn vertices and maximum degree at least~2, (1+o(1))lnnlnlnnCD(G)n1(1+o(1))\frac{\ln n}{\ln\ln n}\leq CD(G) \leq n-1. We discuss the tightness of these bounds and in particular, we characterize the set of graphs reaching the upper bound. We then show that for graphs in which every pair of vertices is connected via a bounded number of paths, CD(G)=Ω(E(G))CD(G)=\Omega\left(\sqrt{|E(G)|}\right), the bound being tight for paths and cycles. We finally investigate the computational complexity of determining CD(G)CD(G) for an input graph GG, showing that the problem is hard and cannot even be approximated efficiently up to a factor of o(logn)o(\log n).
