    An energy-efficient memory unit for clustered microarchitectures

    Whereas clustered microarchitectures themselves have been extensively studied, the memory units for these clustered microarchitectures have received relatively little attention. This article discusses some of the inherent challenges of clustered memory units and shows how these can be overcome. Clustered memory pipelines work well with the late allocation of load/store queue entries and physically unordered queues. Yet this approach has characteristic problems such as queue overflows and allocation patterns that lead to deadlocks. We propose techniques to solve each of these problems and show that a distributed memory unit can offer significant energy savings and speedups over a centralized unit. For instance, compared to a centralized cache with a load/store queue of 64/24 entries, our four-cluster distributed memory unit with load/store queues of 16/8 entries each consumes 31 percent less energy and performs 4,7 percent better on SPECint and consumes 36 percent less energy and performs 7 percent better for SPECfp.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Maximum power point tracking converter based on the open-circuit voltage method for thermoelectric generators

    Thermoelectric generators (TEGs) convert heat energy into electricity in a quantity dependant on the temperature difference across them and the electrical load applied. It is critical to track the optimum electrical operating point through the use of power electronic converters controlled by a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm. The MPPT method based on the opencircuit voltage is arguably the most suitable for the linear electrical characteristic of TEGs. This paper presents an innovative way to perform the open-circuit voltage measure during the pseudo-normal operation of the interfacing power electronic converter. The proposed MPPT technique is supported by theoretical analysis and used to control a synchronous buck-boost converter. The prototype MPPT converter is controlled by an inexpensive microcontroller, and a lead-acid battery is used to accumulate the harvested energy. Experimental results using commercial TEG devices prove that the converter accurately tracks the maximum power point during thermal transients. Precise measurements in steady state show that the converter finds the maximum power point with a tracking efficiency of 99.85%

    Adaptive computational methods for aerothermal heating analysis

    The development of adaptive gridding techniques for finite-element analysis of fluid dynamics equations is described. The developmental work was done with the Euler equations with concentration on shock and inviscid flow field capturing. Ultimately this methodology is to be applied to a viscous analysis for the purpose of predicting accurate aerothermal loads on complex shapes subjected to high speed flow environments. The development of local error estimate strategies as a basis for refinement strategies is discussed, as well as the refinement strategies themselves. The application of the strategies to triangular elements and a finite-element flux-corrected-transport numerical scheme are presented. The implementation of these strategies in the GIM/PAGE code for 2-D and 3-D applications is documented and demonstrated

    The Life-Cycle Income Analysis Model (LIAM): a study of a flexible dynamic microsimulation modelling computing framework

    This paper describes a flexible computing framework designed to create a dynamic microsimulation model, the Life-cycle Income Analysis Model (LIAM). The principle computing characteristics include the degree of modularisation, parameterisation, generalisation and robustness. The paper describes the decisions taken with regard to type of dynamic model used. The LIAM framework has been used to create a number of different microsimulation models, including an Irish dynamic cohort model, a spatial dynamic microsimulation model for Ireland, an indirect tax and consumption model for EU15 as part of EUROMOD and a prototype EU dynamic population microsimulation model for 5 EU countries.     Multilocation Inventory Systems With Centralized Information.

    The management of multi-echelon inventory systems has been both an important and challenging research area for many years. The rapid advance in information technology and the emphasis on integrated supply chain management have new implications for the successful operation of distribution systems. This research focuses on the study of some fundamental issues related to the operation of a multilocation inventory system with centralized information. First, we do a comparative analysis to evaluate the overall performance of individual versus centralized ordering policies for a multi-store distribution system where centralized information is available. This study integrates the existing research and clarifies one of the fundamental questions facing inventory managers today: whether or not ordering decisions should be centralized. Next, we consider a multi-store distribution system where emergency transshipments are permitted among these stores. Based on some simplifying assumptions, we develop an integrated model with a joint consideration of inventory and transshipment components. An approximately optimal (s, S) policy is obtained through a dynamic programming technique. This ordering policy is then compared with a simplified policy that assumes free and instantaneous transshipments. We also examine the relative performance of base stock policies for a centralized-ordering distribution system. Numerical studies are provided to give general guidelines for use of the policies

    FairFuzz: Targeting Rare Branches to Rapidly Increase Greybox Fuzz Testing Coverage

    In recent years, fuzz testing has proven itself to be one of the most effective techniques for finding correctness bugs and security vulnerabilities in practice. One particular fuzz testing tool, American Fuzzy Lop or AFL, has become popular thanks to its ease-of-use and bug-finding power. However, AFL remains limited in the depth of program coverage it achieves, in particular because it does not consider which parts of program inputs should not be mutated in order to maintain deep program coverage. We propose an approach, FairFuzz, that helps alleviate this limitation in two key steps. First, FairFuzz automatically prioritizes inputs exercising rare parts of the program under test. Second, it automatically adjusts the mutation of inputs so that the mutated inputs are more likely to exercise these same rare parts of the program. We conduct evaluation on real-world programs against state-of-the-art versions of AFL, thoroughly repeating experiments to get good measures of variability. We find that on certain benchmarks FairFuzz shows significant coverage increases after 24 hours compared to state-of-the-art versions of AFL, while on others it achieves high program coverage at a significantly faster rate

    We present the theoretical principles of supercycled symmetry-based recoupling sequences in solid-state magic-angle-spinning NMR. We discuss the construction procedure of the SR26 pulse sequence, which is a particularly robust sequence for double-quantum homonuclear dipole-dipole recoupling. The supercycle removes destructive higher-order average Hamiltonian terms and renders the sequence robust over long time intervals. We demonstrate applications of the SR26 sequence to double-quantum spectroscopy, homonuclear spin counting, and determination of the relative orientations of chemical shift anisotropy tensors
