    Energy-Efficient Wireless Connectivity and Wireless Charging For Internet-of-Things (IoT) Applications

    During the recent years, the Internet-of-Things (IoT) has been rapidly evolving. It is indeed the future of communication that has transformed Things of the real world into smarter devices. To date, the world has deployed billions of “smart” connected things. Predictions say there will be 10’s of billions of connected devices by 2025 and in our lifetime we will experience life with a trillion-node network. However, battery lifespan exhibits a critical barrier to scaling IoT devices. Replacing batteries on a trillion-sensor scale is a logistically prohibitive feat. Self-powered IoT devices seems to be the right direction to stand up to that challenge. The main objective of this thesis is to develop solutions to achieve energy-efficient wireless-connectivity and wireless-charging for IoT applications. In the first part of the thesis, I introduce ultra-low power radios that are compatible with the Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE) standard. BLE is considered as the preeminent protocol for short-range communications that support transmission ranges up to 10’s of meters. Number of low power BLE transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX) architectures have been designed, fabricated and tested in different planar CMOS and FinFET technologies. The low power operation is achieved by combining low power techniques in both the network and physical layers, namely: backchannel communication, duty-cycling, open-loop transmission/reception, PLL-less architectures, and mixer-first architectures. Further novel techniques have been proposed to further reduce the power the consumption of the radio design, including: a fast startup time and low startup energy crystal oscillators, an antenna-chip co-design approach for quadrature generation in the RF path, an ultra-low power discrete-time differentiator-based Gaussian Frequency Shift Keying (GFSK) demodulation scheme, an oversampling GFSK modulation/demodulation scheme for open loop transmission/reception and packet synchronization, and a cell-based design approach that allows automation in the design of BLE digital architectures. The implemented BLE TXs transmit fully-compliant BLE advertising packet that can be received by commercial smartphone. In the second part of the thesis, I introduce passive nonlinear resonant circuits to achieve wide-band RF energy harvesting and robust wireless power transfer circuits. Nonlinear resonant circuits modeled by the Duffing nonlinear differential equation exhibit interesting hysteresis characteristics in their frequency and amplitude responses that are exploited in designing self-adaptive wireless charging systems. In the magnetic-resonance wireless power transfer scenario, coupled nonlinear resonators are proposed to maintain the power transfer level and efficiency over a range of coupling factors without active feedback control circuitry. Coupling factor depends on the transmission distance, lateral, and angular misalignments between the charging pad and the device. Therefore, nonlinear resonance extends the efficient charging zones of a wireless charger without the requirement for a precise alignment.PHDElectrical EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.     Ultra-Low-Power Uwb Impulse Radio Design: Architecture, Circuits, And Applications

    Recent advances in home healthcare, environmental sensing, and low power computing have created a need for wireless communication at very low power for low data rate applications. Due to higher energy/bit requirements at lower data -rate, achieving power levels low enough to enable long battery lifetime (~10 years) or power-harvesting supplies have not been possible with traditional approaches. Dutycycled radios have often been proposed in literature as a solution for such applications due to their ability to shut off the static power consumption at low data rates. While earlier radio nodes for such systems have been proposed based on a type of sleepwake scheduling, such implementations are still power hungry due to large synchronization uncertainty (~1[MICRO SIGN]s). In this dissertation, we utilize impulsive signaling and a pulse-coupled oscillator (PCO) based synchronization scheme to facilitate a globally synchronized wireless network. We have modeled this network over a widely varying parameter space and found that it is capable of reducing system cost as well as providing scalability in wireless sensor networks. Based on this scheme, we implemented an FCC compliant, 3-5GHz, timemultiplexed, dual-band UWB impulse radio transceiver, measured to consume only 20[MICRO SIGN]W when the nodes are synchronized for peer-peer communication. At the system level the design was measured to consume 86[MICRO SIGN]W of power, while facilitating multi- hop communication. Simple pulse-shaping circuitry ensures spectral efficiency, FCC compliance and ~30dB band-isolation. Similarly, the band-switchable, ~2ns turn-on receiver implements a non-coherent pulse detection scheme that facilitates low power consumption with -87dBm sensitivity at 100Kbps. Once synchronized the nodes exchange information while duty-cycling, and can use any type of high level network protocols utilized in packet based communication. For robust network performance, a localized synchronization detection scheme based on relative timing and statistics of the PCO firing and the timing pulses ("sync") is reported. No active hand-shaking is required for nodes to detect synchronization. A self-reinforcement scheme also helps maintain synchronization even in the presence of miss-detections. Finally we discuss unique ways to exploit properties of pulse coupled oscillator networks to realize novel low power event communication, prioritization, localization and immediate neighborhood validation for low power wireless sensor applications

    ENABLING HARDWARE TECHNOLOGIES FOR AUTONOMY IN TINY ROBOTS: CONTROL, INTEGRATION, ACTUATION

    The last two decades have seen many exciting examples of tiny robots from a few cm3 to less than one cm3. Although individually limited, a large group of these robots has the potential to work cooperatively and accomplish complex tasks. Two examples from nature that exhibit this type of cooperation are ant and bee colonies. They have the potential to assist in applications like search and rescue, military scouting, infrastructure and equipment monitoring, nano-manufacture, and possibly medicine. Most of these applications require the high level of autonomy that has been demonstrated by large robotic platforms, such as the iRobot and Honda ASIMO. However, when robot size shrinks down, current approaches to achieve the necessary functions are no longer valid. This work focused on challenges associated with the electronics and fabrication. We addressed three major technical hurdles inherent to current approaches: 1) difficulty of compact integration; 2) need for real-time and power-efficient computations; 3) unavailability of commercial tiny actuators and motion mechanisms. The aim of this work was to provide enabling hardware technologies to achieve autonomy in tiny robots. We proposed a decentralized application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) where each component is responsible for its own operation and autonomy to the greatest extent possible. The ASIC consists of electronics modules for the fundamental functions required to fulfill the desired autonomy: actuation, control, power supply, and sensing. The actuators and mechanisms could potentially be post-fabricated on the ASIC directly. This design makes for a modular architecture. The following components were shown to work in physical implementations or simulations: 1) a tunable motion controller for ultralow frequency actuation; 2) a nonvolatile memory and programming circuit to achieve automatic and one-time programming; 3) a high-voltage circuit with the highest reported breakdown voltage in standard 0.5 μm CMOS; 4) thermal actuators fabricated using CMOS compatible process; 5) a low-power mixed-signal computational architecture for robotic dynamics simulator; 6) a frequency-boost technique to achieve low jitter in ring oscillators. These contributions will be generally enabling for other systems with strict size and power constraints such as wireless sensor nodes

    Interface Circuits for Microsensor Integrated Systems

[Recent advances in sensing technologies, especially those for Microsensor Integrated Systems, have led to several new commercial applications. Among these, low voltage and low power circuit architectures have gained growing attention, being suitable for portable long battery life devices. The aim is to improve the performances of actual interface circuits and systems, both in terms of voltage mode and current mode, in order to overcome the potential problems due to technology scaling and different technology integrations. Related problems, especially those concerning parasitics, lead to a severe interface design attention, especially concerning the analog front-end and novel and smart architecture must be explored and tested, both at simulation and prototype level. Moreover, the growing demand for autonomous systems gets even harder the interface design due to the need of energy-aware cost-effective circuit interfaces integrating, where possible, energy harvesting solutions. The objective of this Special Issue is to explore the potential solutions to overcome actual limitations in sensor interface circuits and systems, especially those for low voltage and low power Microsensor Integrated Systems. The present Special Issue aims to present and highlight the advances and the latest novel and emergent results on this topic, showing best practices, implementations and applications. The Guest Editors invite to submit original research contributions dealing with sensor interfacing related to this specific topic. Additionally, application oriented and review papers are encouraged.

    An Energy Efficient Power Converter for Zero Power Wearable Devices

    Early diagnosis of Alzheimer's and epilepsy requires monitoring a subject's development of symptoms through electroencephalography (EEG) signals over long periods. Wearable devices enable convenient monitoring of biosignals, unlike complex and costly hospital equipment. The key to achieving a fit and forgettable wearable device is to increase its operating cycle and decrease its size and weight. Instead of batteries, which limit the life cycle of electronic devices and set their form factor, body heat and environmental light can power wearable devices through energy-scavenging technologies. The harvester transducers should be tailored according to on the application and the sensor placement. This leaves a wide variety of transducers with an extensive range of impedances and voltages. To realize an autonomous wearable device, the power converter energy harvester, has to be very efficient and maintain its efficiency despite potential transducer replacement or variations in environmental conditions. This thesis presents a detailed design of an efficient integrated power converter for use in an autonomous wearable device. The design is based on the examination of both power losses and power transfer in the power converter. The efficiency bound of the converter is derived from the specifications of its transducer. The tuning ranges for the reconfigurable parameters are extracted to keep the converter efficient with variations in the transducer specifications. With the efficient design and the manual tuning of the reconfigurable parameters, the converter can work optimally with different types of transducers, and keeps its efficiency in the conversion of low voltages from the harvesters. Measurements of the designed converter demonstrate an efficiency of higher than 50% and 70% with two different transducers having an open-circuit voltage as low as 20 mV and 100 mV, respectively. The power converter should be able to reconfigure itself without manual tunings to keep its efficiency despite changes in the harvesters' specifications. The second portion of this dissertation addresses this issue with a proposed design methodology to implement a control section. The control section adjusts the converter's reconfigurable parameters by examining the power transfer and loss and through concurrent closed loops. The concurrent loops working together raise a serious concern regarding stability. The system is designed and analyzed in the time domain with the state-space averaging (SSA) model to address the stability issue. The ultra-low-power control section obtained from the SSA model estimates the power and loss with a reasonable accuracy, and adjusts the timings in a stable manner. The entire control section consumes only 30 nW dynamic power at 10 kHz. The control section tunes the converter's speed or its working frequency depending on the available power. The frequency clocks the entire architecture, which is designed asynchronously; therefore, the power consumption of the system depends on the power available from the transducer. The system is implemented using 0.18 µm CMOS technology. For an input as low as 7 mV, the converter is not only functional but also has an efficiency of more than 40%. The efficiency can reach 70% with an input voltage of 50 mV. The system operates in a range of just a few of millivolts to half a volt with ample efficiencies. It can work at an optimal point with different transducers and environmental conditions

    Microelectromechanical Systems for Wireless Radio Front-ends and Integrated Frequency References.

    Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have great potential in realizing chip-scale integrated devices for energy-efficient analog spectrum processing. This thesis presents the development of a new class of MEMS resonators and filters integrated with CMOS readout circuits for RF front-ends and integrated timing applications. Circuit-level innovations coupled with new device designs allowed for realizing integrated systems with improved performance compared to standalone devices reported in the literature. The thesis is comprised of two major parts. The first part of the thesis is focused on developing integrated MEMS timing devices. Fused silica is explored as a new structural material for fabricating high-Q vibrating micromechanical resonators. A piezoelectric-on-silica MEMS resonator is demonstrated with a high Q of more than 20,000 and good electromechanical coupling. A low phase noise CMOS reference oscillator is implemented using the MEMS resonator as a mechanical frequency reference. Temperature-stable operation of the MEMS oscillator is realized by ovenizing the platform using an integrated heater. In an alternative scheme, the intrinsic temperature sensitivity of MEMS resonators is utilized for temperature sensing, and active compensation for MEMS oscillators is realized by oven-control using a phase-locked loop (PLL). CMOS circuits are implemented for realizing the PLL-based low-power oven-control system. The active compensation technique realizes a MEMS oscillator with an overall frequency drift within +/- 4 ppm across -40 to 70 °C, without the need for calibration. The CMOS PLL circuits for oven-control is demonstrated with near-zero phase noise invasion on the MEMS oscillators. The properties of PLL-based compensation for realizing ultra-stable MEMS frequency references are studied. In the second part of the thesis, RF MEMS devices, including tunable capacitors, high-Q inductors, and ohmic switches, are fabricated using a surface micromachined integrated passive device (IPD) process. Using this process, an integrated ultra-wideband (UWB) filter has been demonstrated, showing low loss and a small form factor. To further address the issue of narrow in-band interferences in UWB communication, a tunable MEMS bandstop filter is integrated with the bandpass filter with more than an octave frequency tuning range.
