Application of Advanced Early Warning Systems with Adaptive Protection
This project developed and field-tested two methods of Adaptive Protection systems utilizing synchrophasor data. One method detects conditions of system stress that can lead to unintended relay operation, and initiates a supervisory signal to modify relay response in real time to avoid false trips. The second method detects the possibility of false trips of impedance relays as stable system swings “encroach” on the relays’ impedance zones, and produces an early warning so that relay engineers can re-evaluate relay settings. In addition, real-time synchrophasor data produced by this project was used to develop advanced visualization techniques for display of synchrophasor data to utility operators and engineers
Enhancing Physical Layer Security in AF Relay Assisted Multi-Carrier Wireless Transmission
In this paper, we study the physical layer security (PLS) problem in the dual
hop orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based wireless
communication system. First, we consider a single user single relay system and
study a joint power optimization problem at the source and relay subject to
individual power constraint at the two nodes. The aim is to maximize the end to
end secrecy rate with optimal power allocation over different sub-carriers.
Later, we consider a more general multi-user multi-relay scenario. Under high
SNR approximation for end to end secrecy rate, an optimization problem is
formulated to jointly optimize power allocation at the BS, the relay selection,
sub-carrier assignment to users and the power loading at each of the relaying
node. The target is to maximize the overall security of the system subject to
independent power budget limits at each transmitting node and the OFDMA based
exclusive sub-carrier allocation constraints. A joint optimization solution is
obtained through duality theory. Dual decomposition allows to exploit convex
optimization techniques to find the power loading at the source and relay
nodes. Further, an optimization for power loading at relaying nodes along with
relay selection and sub carrier assignment for the fixed power allocation at
the BS is also studied. Lastly, a sub-optimal scheme that explores joint power
allocation at all transmitting nodes for the fixed subcarrier allocation and
relay assignment is investigated. Finally, simulation results are presented to
validate the performance of the proposed schemes.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, accepted in Transactions on Emerging

Sparse multiple relay selection for network beamforming with individual power constraints using semidefinite relaxation
This paper deals with the multiple relay selection problem in two-hop wireless cooperative networks with individual power constraints at the relays. In particular, it addresses the problem of selecting the best subset of K cooperative nodes and their corresponding beamforming weights so that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is maximized at the destination. This problem is computationally demanding and requires an exhaustive search over all the possible combinations. In order to reduce the complexity, a new suboptimal method is proposed. This technique exhibits a near-optimal performance with a computational burden that is far less than the one needed in the combinatorial search. The proposed method is based on the use of the l1-norm squared and the Charnes-Cooper transformation and naturally leads to a semidefinite programming relaxation with an affordable computational cost. Contrary to other approaches in the literature, the technique exposed herein is based on the knowledge of the second-order statistics of the channels and the relays are not limited to cooperate with full power.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
