A Real-time Nonlinear Model Predictive Controller for Yaw Motion Optimization of Distributed Drive Electric Vehicles
This paper proposes a real-time nonlinear model
predictive control (NMPC) strategy for direct yaw moment control
(DYC) of distributed drive electric vehicles (DDEVs). The NMPC
strategy is based on a control-oriented model built by integrating
a single track vehicle model with the Magic Formula (MF) tire
model. To mitigate the NMPC computational cost, the
continuation/generalized minimal residual (C/GMRES) algorithm
is employed and modified for real-time optimization. Since the
traditional C/GMRES algorithm cannot directly solve the
inequality constraint problem, the external penalty method is
introduced to transform inequality constraints into an
equivalently unconstrained optimization problem. Based on the
Pontryagin’s minimum principle (PMP), the existence and
uniqueness for solution of the proposed C/GMRES algorithm are
proven. Additionally, to achieve fast initialization in C/GMRES
algorithm, the varying predictive duration is adopted so that the
analytic expressions of optimally initial solutions in C/GMRES
algorithm can be derived and gained. A Karush-Kuhn-Tucker
(KKT) condition based control allocation method distributes the
desired traction and yaw moment among four independent
motors. Numerical simulations are carried out by combining
CarSim and Matlab/Simulink to evaluate the effectiveness of the
proposed strategy. Results demonstrate that the real-time NMPC
strategy can achieve superior vehicle stability performance,
guarantee the given safety constraints, and significantly reduce the
computational efforts

Resource-Aware Predictive Models in Cyber-Physical Systems
Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are composed of computing devices interacting with physical systems. Model-based design is a powerful methodology in CPS design in the implementation of control systems. For instance, Model Predictive Control (MPC) is typically implemented in CPS applications, e.g., in path tracking of autonomous vehicles. MPC deploys a model to estimate the behavior of the physical system at future time instants for a specific time horizon. Ordinary Differential Equations (ODE) are the most commonly used models to emulate the behavior of continuous-time (non-)linear dynamical systems. A complex physical model may comprise thousands of ODEs that pose scalability, performance and power consumption challenges. One approach to address these model complexity challenges are frameworks that automate the development of model-to-model transformation. In this dissertation, a state-based model with tunable parameters is proposed to operate as a reconfigurable predictive model of the physical system. Moreover, we propose a run-time switching algorithm that selects the best model using machine learning. We employed a metric that formulates the trade-off between the error and computational savings due to model reduction. Building statistical models are constrained to having expert knowledge and an actual understanding of the modeled phenomenon or process. Also, statistical models may not produce solutions that are as robust in a real-world context as factors outside the model, like disruptions would not be taken into account. Machine learning models have emerged as a solution to account for the dynamic behavior of the environment and automate intelligence acquisition and refinement. Neural networks are machine learning models, well-known to have the ability to learn linear and nonlinear relations between input and output variables without prior knowledge. However, the ability to efficiently exploit resource-hungry neural networks in embedded resource-bound settings is a major challenge.Here, we proposed Priority Neuron Network (PNN), a resource-aware neural networks model that can be reconfigured into smaller sub-networks at runtime. This approach enables a trade-off between the model's computation time and accuracy based on available resources. The PNN model is memory efficient since it stores only one set of parameters to account for various sub-network sizes. We propose a training algorithm that applies regularization techniques to constrain the activation value of neurons and assigns a priority to each one. We consider the neuron's ordinal number as our priority criteria in that the priority of the neuron is inversely proportional to its ordinal number in the layer. This imposes a relatively sorted order on the activation values. We conduct experiments to employ our PNN as the predictive model in a CPS application. We can see that not only our technique will resolve the memory overhead of DNN architectures but it also reduces the computation overhead for the training process substantially. The training time is a critical matter especially in embedded systems where many NN models are trained on the fly
Trajectory planning based on adaptive model predictive control: Study of the performance of an autonomous vehicle in critical highway scenarios
Increasing automation in automotive industry is an important contribution to
overcome many of the major societal challenges. However, testing and validating a highly
autonomous vehicle is one of the biggest obstacles to the deployment of such vehicles,
since they rely on data-driven and real-time sensors, actuators, complex algorithms,
machine learning systems, and powerful processors to execute software, and they must
be proven to be reliable and safe.
For this reason, the verification, validation and testing (VVT) of autonomous
vehicles is gaining interest and attention among the scientific community and there has
been a number of significant efforts in this field. VVT helps developers and testers to
determine any hidden faults, increasing systems confidence in safety, security, functional
analysis, and in the ability to integrate autonomous prototypes into existing road
networks. Other stakeholders like higher-management, public authorities and the public
are also crucial to complete the VTT process.
As autonomous vehicles require hundreds of millions of kilometers of testing
driven on public roads before vehicle certification, simulations are playing a key role as
they allow the simulation tools to virtually test millions of real-life scenarios, increasing
safety and reducing costs, time and the need for physical road tests.
In this study, a literature review is conducted to classify approaches for the VVT
and an existing simulation tool is used to implement an autonomous driving system. The
system will be characterized from the point of view of its performance in some critical
highway scenarios.O aumento da automação na indústria automotiva é uma importante
contribuição para superar muitos dos principais desafios da sociedade. No entanto,
testar e validar um veículo altamente autónomo é um dos maiores obstáculos para a
implantação de tais veículos, uma vez que eles contam com sensores, atuadores,
algoritmos complexos, sistemas de aprendizagem de máquina e processadores potentes
para executar softwares em tempo real, e devem ser comprovadamente confiáveis e
seguros.
Por esta razão, a verificação, validação e teste (VVT) de veículos autónomos está
a ganhar interesse e atenção entre a comunidade científica e tem havido uma série de
esforços significativos neste campo. A VVT ajuda os desenvolvedores e testadores a
determinar quaisquer falhas ocultas, aumentando a confiança dos sistemas na
segurança, proteção, análise funcional e na capacidade de integrar protótipos autónomos
em redes rodoviárias existentes. Outras partes interessadas, como a alta administração,
autoridades públicas e o público também são cruciais para concluir o processo de VTT.
Como os veículos autónomos exigem centenas de milhões de quilómetros de
testes conduzidos em vias públicas antes da certificação do veículo, as simulações estão
a desempenhar cada vez mais um papel fundamental, pois permitem que as ferramentas
de simulação testem virtualmente milhões de cenários da vida real, aumentando a
segurança e reduzindo custos, tempo e necessidade de testes físicos em estrada.
Neste estudo, é realizada uma revisão da literatura para classificar abordagens
para a VVT e uma ferramenta de simulação existente é usada para implementar um
sistema de direção autónoma. O sistema é caracterizado do ponto de vista do seu

How Informative are the Subjective Density Forecasts of Macroeconomists?
In this paper, we propose a framework to evaluate the information content of subjective expert density forecasts using micro data from the ECB’s Survey of Professional Forecasters (SPF). A key aspect of our analysis is the use of scoring functions which evaluate the entire predictive densities, including an evaluation of the impact of density features such as their location, spread, skew and tail risk on density forecast performance. Overall, we find considerable heterogeneity in the performance of the surveyed densities at the individual level. Relative to a set of crude benchmark alternatives, this performance is somewhat better for GDP growth than for inflation, although in the former case it diminishes substantially with the forecast horizon. In addition, relative to the proposed benchmarks, we report evidence of some improvement in the performance of expert densities during the recent period of macroeconomic volatility. However, our analysis also reveals clear evidence of overconfidence or neglected risks in the expert probability assessments, as reflected also in frequent occurrences of events which are assigned a zero probability. Moreover, higher moment features of the expert densities, such as their skew or the degree of probability mass in their tails, are shown not to contribute significantly to improvements in individual density forecast performance.density forecasts, forecast evaluation, real-time data, Survey of Professional Forecasters
Predictive battery thermal management using quantile convolutional neural networks
An improvement in energy efficiency of Battery Thermal Management Systems (BTMS) can increase range and reduce well-to-wheel emissions of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV). In this work, the potential of a predictive BTMS using Quantile Convolutional Neural Networks (QCNN) was examined. The QCNN provided quantile predictions of battery temperature based on input data from both previous and following drive segments. The predictive control was designed to choose battery cooling thresholds based on a weighted sum of battery cooling, ageing and derating costs derived by the quantile predictions. The predictive BTMS was analyzed concerning its adaptability to different routes ahead, tunability of cost weights as well as robustness to uncertainty of inputs. A setup with unchanged ageing costs reduced average cooling costs by 9% compared to a fixed threshold strategy in a set of 18 scenarios. Simplifications and limitations were discussed to provide a base for further improvements, for example concerning the limited freedom of cooling threshold choice. In conclusion, the developed framework was able to use QCNN predictions to increase the BTMS energy efficiency while taking ageing and derating effects into account
Integrated Thermal and Energy Management of Connected Hybrid Electric Vehicles Using Deep Reinforcement Learning
The climate-adaptive energy management system holds promising potential for harnessing the concealed energy-saving capabilities of connected plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. This research focuses on exploring the synergistic effects of artificial intelligence control and traffic preview to enhance the performance of the energy management system (EMS). A high-fidelity model of a multi-mode connected PHEV is calibrated using experimental data as a foundation. Subsequently, a model-free multistate deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm is proposed to develop the integrated thermal and energy management (ITEM) system, incorporating features of engine smart warm-up and engine-assisted heating for cold climate conditions. The optimality and adaptability of the proposed system is evaluated through both offline tests and online hardware-in-the-loop tests, encompassing a homologation driving cycle and a real-world driving cycle in China with real-time traffic data. The results demonstrate that ITEM achieves a close to dynamic programming fuel economy performance with a margin of 93.7%, while reducing fuel consumption ranging from 2.2% to 9.6% as ambient temperature decreases from 15°C to -15°C in comparison to state-of-the-art DRL-based EMS solutions
