Interface Characteristics at an Organic/Metal Junction: Pentacene on Cu Stepped Surfaces
The adsorption of pentacene on Cu(221), Cu(511) and Cu(911) is investigated
using density functional theory (DFT) with the self-consistent inclusion of van
der Waals (vdW) interactions. Cu(211) is a vicinal of Cu(111) while Cu(511) and
(911) are vicinals of Cu(100). For all the three surfaces, we found pentacene
to prefer to adsorb parallel to the surface and near the steps. The addition of
vdW interactions resulted in an enhancement in adsorption energies, with
reference to the PBE functional, of around 2 eV. With vdWs inclusion, the
adsorption energies were found to be 2.98 eV, 3.20 eV and 3.49 eV for Cu(211),
Cu(511) and Cu(911) respectively. These values reflect that pentacene adsorbs
stronger on (100) terraces with a preference for larger terraces. The molecule
tilts upon adsorption with a small tilt angle on the (100) vicinals (about a
few degrees) as compared to a large one on Cu(221) where the tilt angle is
found to be about 20o. We find that the adsorption results in a net charge
transfer to the molecule of ~1 electron, for all surfaces.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Where There’s a Wall There’s a Way: The End (?) of Democratic Discourse Regarding Immigration and Border Security Policy
Border walls have become part and parcel to corporate strategies to garner profits in the new era of post-911 insecurity. Combined with pre-911 agribusiness, service industry and other corporateindustrial expansion including encouraging the “ongoing” recruiting of undocumented cheap labor, the twin corporate policy directives are achieving profits at the expense of the people migrating from Latin America. Building on previous work, the authors analyze the problems created by corporations, complicit government agencies and elected officials in terms of maintaining a status quo that effectively exploits communities from both sides of the US/Mexico border. Policy alternatives are developed, offered and examined to alleviate the continuing misery that affects people living on both sides of the border using critical and postmodern theoretical frameworks
Dial 911 and Report a Congressional Empty Promise: The Wireless Communications and Public Safety Act of 1999
Designed to promote the prompt deployment of a seamless emergency services infrastructure to meet the nation\u27s safety needs, the 911 Act not only instructs the FCC to assign the abbreviated dialing code 911 for use as the universal emergency telephone number, but also directs the Commission to establish appropriate transition periods for compliance in areas without 911 service. Furthermore, the 911 Act supports individual states\u27 efforts to develop comprehensive emergency communications. Although improving the 911 system and saving lives by developing an end-to-end emergency communications network are commendable goals, this Note argues that the anemic 911 Act is an important first step, but accomplishes little beyond merely establishing 911 as the universal emergency telephone number
On Volatility Spillovers and Dominant Effects in East Asian: Before and After the 911
The present paper examines the dynamic effects of volatility spillovers and dominant role (the second-moment) of the US, Japan and Hong Kong in the East Asian equity markets. To evaluate the recent September 11 (911) impact, two sub periods – before and after the tragedy, are being considered based on daily market returns. The upshots of our findings are five-fold. First, for all markets the constant risk components, as well as the ARCH and GARCH effects are significantly detected, implying the persistency of volatility in East Asian equity markets. Nevertheless, not all indexes show asymmetrical news effects. Though all indexes show leverage effects, they are significant only for certain countries including the US and Japan, which is consistent with empirical literature. Second, the volatilities of these equity markets are bounded in common stochastic trends, at least in the long run. Third, the Hong Kong long run coefficients are more significant than that of US or Japan before the 911 calamity. Nonetheless, there is sufficient evidence showing that the US spillovers were transmitted via Hong Kong. After the 911, the Hong Kong’s spillovers trim down while Japanese influence enhance as in Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Singapore. Taken as a whole (1998-2002), Japanese spillovers are relatively small and nonsignificant in some East Asian equity markets. Fourth, the ECT coefficients are significant but small (except for Hong Kong). The East Asian equity markets are thereby endogenously determined and the volatility adjustments to the long run equilibrium are slow, once being shocked. The ECT coefficients slightly improved after 911. Fifth, volatilities in the East Asian equity markets are attributed mainly to the shocks of local and regional factors rather than the world factor. In a nutshell, the volatility spillovers and the Hong Kong- and US-dominant effects have been confirmed. Hitherto, the 911 impact is relatively small and somewhat inconclusive.East Asian; Spillover Effect; Dominant Effect; EGARCH-M; ARDL Bounds Testing Approach

Gender Differences in Calls to 9-1-1 During an Acute Coronary Syndrome
Calling 911 during acute coronary syndromes (ACS) decreases time to treatment and may improve prognosis. Women may have more atypical ACS symptoms compared to men, but few data are available on differences in gender and ACS symptoms in calling 911. In this study, patient interviews and structured chart reviews were conducted to determine gender differences in calling 911. Calls to 911 were assessed by self-report and validated by medical chart review. Of the 476 patients studied, 292 (61%) were diagnosed with unstable angina and 184 (39%) with myocardial infarctions (MIs). Overall, only 23% of patients called 911. Similar percentages of women and men with unstable angina called 911 (15% and 13%, respectively, p = 0.59). In contrast, women with MIs were significantly more likely to call 911 than men (57% vs 28%, p <0.001). After adjustment for sociodemographic factors, health insurance status, history of MI, the left ventricular ejection fraction, Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events (GRACE) score, and ACS symptoms, women were 1.79 times more likely to call 911 during an MI than men (prevalence ratio 1.79, 95% confidence interval 1.22 to 2.64, p <0.01). In conclusion, the findings of the present study suggest that initiatives to increase calls to 911 are needed for women and men
Bivariate Causality between Exchange Rates and Stock Prices on Major Asian Countries
This paper studies the cointegration and the bivariate causality relationship between exchange rates and stock prices on the seven Asian countries badly hit by the Asian Financial Crisis. Our empirical results show that, before the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, all countries, except the Philippines and Malaysia, experience no evidence of Granger causality between the exchange rates and the stock prices. However, the causality but not the cointegration between the capital and financial markets appear to become strong during the Asian Financial Crisis period. Surprisingly, after the 911-terrorist-attack, the causality relationship between the two markets returns to normal as in the pre-Asian-crisis period and the cointegration relationship weakens between exchange rates and stock prices. Thus, we conclude that (1) Asian Financial Crisis has a bigger and more direct impact on the causality relationship between stock prices and currency exchanges in Asian markets and the 911-terrorist-attack basically has no impact on the causality relationship between the two markets; and (2) the financial and capital markets have become more mature and efficient after the crisis.Asian Financial Crisis, 911-Terrorist-Attack, Dynamic Linkages, Cointegration, Bivariate Causality
Tiergerechte Nutztierhaltung [Animal appropriate husbandry in relation to animal welfare]

Determination of design spectrum compatible evolutionary spectra via Monte Carlo peak factor estimation
The problem of generating ensembles of artificial non-stationary earthquake accelerograms compatible with a given (target) response/design spectrum is cast on a stochastic basis. The design spectrum of the European aseismic code provisions (EC8) for various soil conditions and damping ratios is used as a paradigm of a design/target spectrum. The generated accelerograms are construed as realizations of a non-stationary random process; they are char-acterized in the frequency domain by a parametrically defined evolutionary power spectrum (EPS). An appropriate least squared optimization problem is formulated for the determination of the parameters of the EPS. The solution of this problem involves the incorporation of a “peak factor” which is used to re-late the target spectrum to the EPS in a probabilistic context. To this end, a comprehensive Monte Carlo study is undertaken to estimate numerically the statistical properties of the peak factor from appropriately computed popula-tions, and to derive polynomial expressions for the median frequency-dependent peak factors (peak factor spectra). These expressions are used in conjunction with the herein adopted optimization problem to determine EPSs compatible with the EC8 design spectrum. The derived median peak factor spectra yield an excellent level of agreement between the EC8 spectrum and the ensemble average and median response spectra of simulated EPS-compatible ensembles of accelerograms
