    Residual aligner-based network (RAN): motion-separable structure for coarse-to-fine discontinuous deformable registration

    Deformable image registration, the estimation of the spatial transformation between different images, is an important task in medical imaging. Deep learning techniques have been shown to perform 3D image registration efficiently. However, current registration strategies often only focus on the deformation smoothness, which leads to the ignorance of complicated motion patterns (e.g., separate or sliding motions), especially for the intersection of organs. Thus, the performance when dealing with the discontinuous motions of multiple nearby objects is limited, causing undesired predictive outcomes in clinical usage, such as misidentification and mislocalization of lesions or other abnormalities. Consequently, we proposed a novel registration method to address this issue: a new Motion Separable backbone is exploited to capture the separate motion, with a theoretical analysis of the upper bound of the motions’ discontinuity provided. In addition, a novel Residual Aligner module was used to disentangle and refine the predicted motions across the multiple neighboring objects/organs. We evaluate our method, Residual Aligner-based Network (RAN), on abdominal Computed Tomography (CT) scans and it has shown to achieve one of the most accurate unsupervised inter-subject registration for the 9 organs, with the highest-ranked registration of the veins (Dice Similarity Coefficient (%)/Average surface distance (mm): 62%/4.9mm for the vena cava and 34%/7.9mm for the portal and splenic vein), with a smaller model structure and less computation compared to state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, when applied to lung CT, the RAN achieves comparable results to the best-ranked networks (94%/3.0mm), also with fewer parameters and less computation

    Fuzzy techniques for noise removal in image sequences and interval-valued fuzzy mathematical morphology

    Image sequences play an important role in today's world. They provide us a lot of information. Videos are for example used for traffic observations, surveillance systems, autonomous navigation and so on. Due to bad acquisition, transmission or recording, the sequences are however usually corrupted by noise, which hampers the functioning of many image processing techniques. A preprocessing module to filter the images often becomes necessary. After an introduction to fuzzy set theory and image processing, in the first main part of the thesis, several fuzzy logic based video filters are proposed: one filter for grayscale video sequences corrupted by additive Gaussian noise and two color extensions of it and two grayscale filters and one color filter for sequences affected by the random valued impulse noise type. In the second main part of the thesis, interval-valued fuzzy mathematical morphology is studied. Mathematical morphology is a theory intended for the analysis of spatial structures that has found application in e.g. edge detection, object recognition, pattern recognition, image segmentation, image magnification… In the thesis, an overview is given of the evolution from binary mathematical morphology over the different grayscale morphology theories to interval-valued fuzzy mathematical morphology and the interval-valued image model. Additionally, the basic properties of the interval-valued fuzzy morphological operators are investigated. Next, also the decomposition of the interval-valued fuzzy morphological operators is investigated. We investigate the relationship between the cut of the result of such operator applied on an interval-valued image and structuring element and the result of the corresponding binary operator applied on the cut of the image and structuring element. These results are first of all interesting because they provide a link between interval-valued fuzzy mathematical morphology and binary mathematical morphology, but such conversion into binary operators also reduces the computation. Finally, also the reverse problem is tackled, i.e., the construction of interval-valued morphological operators from the binary ones. Using the results from a more general study in which the construction of an interval-valued fuzzy set from a nested family of crisp sets is constructed, increasing binary operators (e.g. the binary dilation) are extended to interval-valued fuzzy operators

    A Fusion Framework for Camouflaged Moving Foreground Detection in the Wavelet Domain

    Detecting camouflaged moving foreground objects has been known to be difficult due to the similarity between the foreground objects and the background. Conventional methods cannot distinguish the foreground from background due to the small differences between them and thus suffer from under-detection of the camouflaged foreground objects. In this paper, we present a fusion framework to address this problem in the wavelet domain. We first show that the small differences in the image domain can be highlighted in certain wavelet bands. Then the likelihood of each wavelet coefficient being foreground is estimated by formulating foreground and background models for each wavelet band. The proposed framework effectively aggregates the likelihoods from different wavelet bands based on the characteristics of the wavelet transform. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method significantly outperformed existing methods in detecting camouflaged foreground objects. Specifically, the average F-measure for the proposed algorithm was 0.87, compared to 0.71 to 0.8 for the other state-of-the-art methods.Comment: 13 pages, accepted by IEEE TI

    A Study on Hand Gesture Recognition Technique

    Hand gesture recognition system can be used for interfacing between computer and human using hand gesture. This work presents a technique for a human computer interface through hand gesture recognition that is able to recognize 25 static gestures from the American Sign Language hand alphabet. The objective of this thesis is to develop an algorithm for recognition of hand gestures with reasonable accuracy. The segmentation of gray scale image of a hand gesture is performed using Otsu thresholding algorithm. Otsu algorithm treats any segmentation problem as classification problem. Total image level is divided into two classes one is hand and other is background. The optimal threshold value is determined by computing the ratio between class variance and total class variance. A morphological filtering method is used to effectively remove background and object noise in the segmented image. Morphological method consists of dilation, erosion, opening, and closing operation. Canny edge detection technique is used to find the boundary of hand gesture in image. A contour tracking algorithm is applied to track the contour in clockwise direction. Contour of a gesture is represented by a Localized Contour Sequence (L.C.S) whose samples are the perpendicular distances between the contour pixels and the chord connecting the end-points of a window centered on the contour pixels. These extracted features are applied as input to classifier. Linear classifier discriminates the images based on dissimilarity between two images. Multi Class Support Vector Machine (MCSVM) and Least Square Support Vector Machine (LSSVM) is also implemented for the classification purpose. Experimental result shows that 94.2% recognition accuracy is achieved by using linear classifier and 98.6% recognition accuracy is achieved using Multiclass Support Vector machine classifier. Least Square Support Vector Machine (LSSVM) classifier is also used for classification purpose and shows 99.2% recognition accuracy

    Single Particle Tracking: Analysis Techniques for Live Cell Nanoscopy.

    Single molecule experiments are a set of experiments designed specifically to study the properties of individual molecules. It has only been in the last three decades where single molecule experiments have been applied to the life sciences; where they have been successfully implemented in systems biology for probing the behaviors of sub-cellular mechanisms. The advent and growth of super-resolution techniques in single molecule experiments has made the fundamental behaviors of light and the associated nano-probes a necessary concern among life scientists wishing to advance the state of human knowledge in biology. This dissertation disseminates some of the practices learned in experimental live cell microscopy. The topic of single particle tracking is addressed here in a format that is designed for the physicist who embarks upon single molecule studies. Specifically, the focus is on the necessary procedures to generate single particle tracking analysis techniques that can be implemented to answer biological questions. These analysis techniques range from designing and testing a particle tracking algorithm to inferring model parameters once an image has been processed. The intellectual contributions of the author include the techniques in diffusion estimation, localization filtering, and trajectory associations for tracking which will all be discussed in detail in later chapters. The author of this thesis has also contributed to the software development of automated gain calibration, live cell particle simulations, and various single particle tracking packages. Future work includes further evaluation of this laboratory\u27s single particle tracking software, entropy based approaches towards hypothesis validations, and the uncertainty quantification of gain calibration

    Direct occlusion handling for high level image processing algorithms

    Many high-level computer vision algorithms suffer in the presence of occlusions caused by multiple objects overlapping in a view. Occlusions remove the direct correspondence between visible areas of objects and the objects themselves by introducing ambiguity in the interpretation of the shape of the occluded object. Ignoring this ambiguity allows the perceived geometry of overlapping objects to be deformed or even fractured. Supplementing the raw image data with a vectorized structural representation which predicts object completions could stabilize high-level algorithms which currently disregard occlusions. Studies in the neuroscience community indicate that the feature points located at the intersection of junctions may be used by the human visual system to produce these completions. Geiger, Pao, and Rubin have successfully used these features in a purely rasterized setting to complete objects in a fashion similar to what is demonstrated by human perception. This work proposes using these features in a vectorized approach to solving the mid-level computer vision problem of object stitching. A system has been implemented which is able extract L and T-junctions directly from the edges of an image using scale-space and robust statistical techniques. The system is sensitive enough to be able to isolate the corners on polygons with 24 sides or more, provided sufficient image resolution is available. Areas of promising development have been identified and several directions for further research are proposed
